Me too. That first OG bars and the Grosso brat and the Kevin Staab decks were my all time favourites. Didn't get a real pro model til the next year. I got the santa cruz grosso and my bro got the lucero x2...the best of times. Thanks John -from New Zealand.
This is awesome. I feel like the artists/designers don't get enough recognition in the industry. This is my dream job also, to design boards for a company,Or start my own company.
Do a shitload of graphics for companies you like and send em to them. If you don't get a satisfying answer, at least you have a lot of work to put in your portfolio. Connect, work and enjoy. Best of luck!
Fuck yeah Lucero, I skated vans park in early 2000’s and was always rocking Label boards and Grosso was there and came up to me and asked if I was getting boards, I sent him a tape and he sent me some boards. What a great day that was, Rest in Power Grosso! Thank you Lucero 🔥🔥🔥
I can distinctly remember the first time I saw the Lucero red cross sticker at a skate shop and all of my friends literally freaking out. Real skateboarding culture is about something being so rad that children actually flip out over stickers , board graphics. Lucero is not just a true icon, he is one of the few true keepers of the flame.
My favorite graphic of all time is the Madrid Lucero Jester. John needs his own show where he discusses art, music and skating. I’m sure he has a ton of rad stories growing up in the center of skateboarding culture and history.
John was the first pro skater I ever met; it was at an ESA Contest at the Brooklyn Banks (maybe 1987) where he did some rolling tailslide, while holding up the nose and switching/ crossing his feet. Hahaha!! That day, I knew I would become a pro skater if THIS GUY is doing this nonsense. Haha! I took 4th place in that contest and the rest was NYC skateboarding history. John embodies the word skateboarding just as much as Tony Hawk, Mike McGill and Christian Hosoi. Cheers from New York, John! : )
Loved this! Thanks for all your efforts Lucero and Thrasher! Many hours reading your mag and going out and trying to do what we saw in the mags.... Shane-O Richmond, Ca.
i went to a skate jam featuring lucero and grosso in 1987 in montclair cali!! i was 13 !! both of em signed my pink sims t-shirt!! i was hooked on skating from that point on! i just turned 48 this week!! i still have a brand new grosso pink deck with grosso independent trucks !! i will never change!!!!
Just the best. John is my all time favorite “skateboard personality”. He always seemed like such a humble, regular cat that made skateboarding look like pure fun. Also, the Red Cross board is the best deck I ever rode. I had a couple, loved that model.
I love this series. I’m watching it with my son because he loves to draw and is actually getting pretty good at it. This is a great way for him to see a piece of what I love skateboarding. I’m gonna buy him a blank so he can make himself a pro model
Huge thanks for doing these documentary style videos. As a kid, I never really paid attention to who did what, but now that I'm older I have a huge appreciation for everyone involved with making skateboarding what it is today. I still have a lot of learning to do so keep em coming! 🙌
This is such a heart warming video. Thanks so much for sharing. All of you guys, the graphics, the skate companies were everything growing up. Hands down, best days of my life.
As a kid I wanted the OG Bars skateboard so bad. When I finally went to the skate shop, they had the X2 model out. That ended up being my very first skateboard. I was like 8 or 9 years old. I’m obsessed with that design. (OG Bars)
Wish he had talked about the elephant holding the flower! I thought that was so cool! Lucero was one of my faves in the 80s. I could easily watch a much longer video of him talking about this stuff.
You left out his second Schmidt's graphic where the jester busted open the jail bars. That was my all time favorite. And his many Grosso graphics for Santa Cruz. All so dope.i had the white board with the red cross too . Loved it, never knew of the cease and desist .
Thanks for the education Lucero, had no idea you were creating so many designs on decks! Really like Black Label and still have it in my garage @ 50. I had lines @ Burnside on that deck and will be with me forever. Great video, THX!
Lucero’s contribution to skateboarding is criminally underrated.
100%
It’s funny to because Slappys are back in style the last few years, that’s all Lance and Lucero
Your not wrong .
Fact!
@@porkpie8667 you’re
I could listen to him tell stories for days. Lucero is rad on so many levels.
Me too. That first OG bars and the Grosso brat and the Kevin Staab decks were my all time favourites. Didn't get a real pro model til the next year. I got the santa cruz grosso and my bro got the lucero x2...the best of times. Thanks John -from New Zealand.
This could’ve and probably should’ve been at least an hour longer
Didn't realize just how many designs this guy put out... ICONIC!! 🤙
Lucero is a real treasure to the history of skateboarding. What an interesting dude!
This is awesome. I feel like the artists/designers don't get enough recognition in the industry. This is my dream job also, to design boards for a company,Or start my own company.
Same dream bro
Do a shitload of graphics for companies you like and send em to them. If you don't get a satisfying answer, at least you have a lot of work to put in your portfolio. Connect, work and enjoy. Best of luck!
They dont deserve any recognition. It's easy work.
If this is your dream job make sure you make connections in your local scene, at some point somebody is going to need an artist

The best! Lucero should do a nine club. That would be so good
I can distinctly remember the first time I saw the Lucero red cross sticker at a skate shop and all of my friends literally freaking out. Real skateboarding culture is about something being so rad that children actually flip out over stickers , board graphics. Lucero is not just a true icon, he is one of the few true keepers of the flame.

Loved the Staab graphic. Never knew John done that one.
Right? I also had no idea he did Mike Smith's duck graphic. Iconic 🍻
Grosso forever! Thank you for all the fun and entertainment John. Label Kills!!!
My favorite graphic of all time is the Madrid Lucero Jester. John needs his own show where he discusses art, music and skating. I’m sure he has a ton of rad stories growing up in the center of skateboarding culture and history.
Wow. I'm learning so much about when I started skating... I just skated back in the 80s, and didn't know who ran/owned companies. Loving this series.
didnt even know John did graphics!!! wow! so many iconic classic graphics!
somehow this is getting me way more hyped to skate compared to videos full of skating !!
Lucero is a true legend. One of the biggest inspirations for me as a Graphic Designer / illustrator
In my lifetime I really hope I find passion like this man has
When I was 17 Label Kills came out. Thank you for getting me hyped on Jason Adams again... such a rad company man!!!
John was the first pro skater I ever met; it was at an ESA Contest at the Brooklyn Banks (maybe 1987) where he did some rolling tailslide, while holding up the nose and switching/ crossing his feet. Do one on the GOAT DON PENDLETON. MUCH RESPECT TO LUCERO. WHAT A LEGEND.
John is brilliant. He knew that his window as a skater was closing so he figured out other ways to do what he loves.
true legend, nice guy. Lucero deserves a lot of respect.
Yeah man, do your thing, is dope
I've been in love with Black Label since day one....such an easy relationship. Thanks

As a skater who now owns a graphic design studio, I truly love this series! Thank you for bringing this to us TM!
Thanks Lucero !
An amazing amount of history in his house
I remember seeing that Johnny Rotten in Thrasher back in the day and being pretty blown away!
Schmitt stix had the highest quality boards in that era.... Those were beautiful boards.
Yes they were
Monty had some sickies
They really were. They were hard to get where I lived, but they were top notch.
Thank you for this. True gem for skate nerds
Wish he had talked about the elephant holding the flower! I thought that was so cool! Lucero was one of my faves in the 80s. I could easily watch a much longer video of him talking about this stuff.
That Schmitt stix lucero board was my favorite board ever. Slime ball wheels and independent trucks. Good times! 🤟🤟
John Lucero needs to be on The Nine Club for at least 2 hours! 🛹🛹👍🏽👊🏽🔥🔥
2 hours a week more like it. I'd listen to all of it too
I hope to have my art on boards someday. Dudes a true inspiration and legend MF 100
You can do it, go to the skateboard manufacturers directly. It’s pretty painless actually
You left out his second Schmidt's graphic where the jester busted open the jail bars. That was my all time favorite. And his many Grosso graphics for Santa Cruz. All so dope.i had the white board with the red cross too . Loved it, never knew of the cease and desist .

This was great! Lucero is the Best!
I don't like being the centre of attention: Agrees to an in depth video interview/documentary that countless people will see.
Thanks for the education Lucero, had no idea you were creating so many designs on decks! Really like Black Label and still have it in my garage @ 50. I had lines @ Burnside on that deck and will be with me forever.
