I have been to LA and loved it. I am from Toronto, a city that has ALL the problems of LA but is more expensive, has no beach, ocean, mountains, nice weather and interesting things to see and do. Toronto makes LA look like paradise, believe me. I spend up to 4 hours in my car every day, had to move way outside of the city and still spend 4000 a month on rent (a one bedroom apartment here is 2500.00). Electric costs are the HIGHEST in the world here and don't even start with car insurance. Our public transit is non-existent, 3 lines for a city with 5 million people. We build both out and up, no green space left any more and soon we won't see the sun because of the thousands of condos they constantly build. Average house cost - 1.1 million. That's for a simple 3 bedroom 1 bath with no yard or garage. Yup, when you live in Toronto, every other city in the world looks good.

Shelby Church oh wow I wished my landlord let us do that when I lived with roommates, so much easier than constantly having to remind other roommates to pay their portion
When I have a housemate, I've found that the best way to do it is the "pass the hunny" technique - ie, basically you hire each other to clean the house every week for $100. If someone doesn't want to? No problem! All they have to do is to pay the other person (ie, me) to do it in their place. If both are willing to clean, then you just pass a $100 bill back and forth every week (hence the name). But if they don't want to? Then I get paid $100 to do an hour's worth of work. (Which is how much it would cost to pay a maid to do it, as around here at least they always work in pairs, and require a minimum of an hour's work just to make it worth their while.)

There are many places in the world that is cheaper than LA. LA is expensive for a reason, it's a high demand place where many people want to live. High demand means more expensive.
