  • This is a full tear-down of a 14" Sony HT Trinitron PVM CRT monitor. I will be walking through the entire process including replacing capacitors and re-assembly.
    The official brand on the front is an Olympus OEV 142, but this is a clone of the Sony PVM 14M2 or Sony PVM 1353MD. The PVM needs a Capacitor Replacement. This is part 1 of a 2 part series. Please Like, Subscribe, & Hit the Notification bell to get the latest videos. Thanks - Steve

    This is very valuable info. So hard to find step by step disassembly for pvms.

    Very useful to people who don't have much of an idea of how these come apart and look inside be a great help to many people who are looking to get into this. great work I didn't think the main board was coming out ha! patience! Of a Saint!

      Thanks Alex, Yeah the plastic tabs on that Main board kept getting hung up. I was first worried I was doing something wrong and missed a screw or something, but it just need a little more wiggling. Can't rush anything with a CRT.

      I will show it before and after. I'm also going to paint the metal shell part. I won't be able to paint the bezel, so I'm trying to think of what color I'd like to make it.

    Nice color on this Sony HT Trinitron PVM CRT Steve. Reminds me of my old Emerson unit I had in the late 90's. Always glad to see capacitors replacement videos bro. Helps the units last another 20 more years. 8^)
    Nice to see your pooch in the video Steve. He should be Retro Tech's mascot. 8^)

      Thanks Anthony, Brutus is always lurking around in the garage. He is mostly sleeping, but occasionally he gets a little rowdy. He will be in some more vids I'm sure.

    The Flyback have Focus & Screen regulator or only Focus ? Great Video.

    I have a question: I have a 14 inch sony pvm that looks great, except where white screens are concerned. When the screen is white there are some splotches of discoloration in the center of the screen. What could be the problem?

    I have a question for you. I have a Sony PVM-1340 and have only used S-Video and Composite video so far. The picture is ok but seems to be dark and will only look good if you keep it dark. If I increase the brightness it blurs the picture. I have opened it up and physically Inspected the Capacitors and they visually have no issues. Since you work on these do you think that could be a Cap issue or do you think my Monitor might need a Sencore CR7000 revitalizing session?

    • @RetroTechUSA
      @RetroTechUSA  5 років тому +1

      Did you try adjusting the pots on the back of the flyback? One controls brightness and the other helps focus a blurry picture. If you still have the problem, then most likely the tube has a lot of hours on it and is just wearing out. Caps won't affect this.

    Hi Steve,
    Recently repaired a monitor that had bit of a rough life. I noticed that that green spacer on the neck board was crumbling. I've taken it completely off and the monitor still works well. Anything I need to worry about?
    Thanks

    • @RetroTechUSA
      @RetroTechUSA  4 роки тому +1

      No that's fine. It's just a spacer to protect the tube

    Are you using stereo microphone? This video sounds like you’re using a binaural mic. I can hear you moving around slightly behind my right ear.

      Most of my older videos where shot using a samsung S7 smartphone with just the mic on the phone. Ahh, The good old days.

    I have a PVM-1354Q that shuts down before it can fully come online. The LEDs come on for a second before shutting down. I'm betting it's a capacitor issue, because it's old and the previous owner said that it used to stop happening once it was warm, but I don't know enough to judge.
    What was the reason for recapping the one in this video? I love your channel by the way.

    Technical question: From everything I've read, Mica capacitors are higher quality and much more durable than electrolytics. Would it be a good idea to replace the old caps with micas?
    BTW Steve, I'm in Chattanooga, TN. What part are you in?

    • @CasualGamerCC
      @CasualGamerCC 5 років тому +2

      Not the poster, but I would think it's best to replace caps with the same style. I would only consider using ceramics or tantalum caps for instance in something like a game console where it's easy to diagnose and you still stay away from the audio and video circuits.

      @RetroTechUSA  5 років тому +1

      Hey Jarrod. I'm in middle TN. I have an office in Gallatin, TN if you are familiar with that area. I am going to stick with the electrolytic caps. That's what I always do, and I've never had any issues with them.

    Hey there, I have this model which I haven't gotten into yet, But I also have an oev203 which I have opened and checked out. The power to the unit works, but im not getting any picture at all. Nothing appears to be burnt out, so how do I start in locating the source of the problem? If the tube is gone is there anything I can do about it?

    • @riggel8804
      @riggel8804 5 років тому

      That sucks good luck. Have you tried all the inputs? Composite? S video? Component a? Component b?

    • @RetroTechUSA
      @RetroTechUSA  5 років тому

      If the tube is gone, all you can do is get a replacement tube. It could be your flyback too if you aren't getting any power to the tube.

  • @ecco222
    @ecco222 5 років тому +1

    How do you know when the tube is failing? And why replace all capacitors rather than just replacing the failed ones?

    good video. did this particular unit have display issues to start with ?

    • @RetroTechUSA
      @RetroTechUSA  5 років тому

      Yes it had a specific issue on the PIN control line. I will go over it more in detail on the 2nd video while I'm recapping it. Thank you

      @@spilmer1 Thanks man. I look forward to your input too. I know replacing all the caps is tedious and not necessary, but it's a fun task for me and a chance to just spotlight these PVMs.

    I came here only to see how to actually remove the cover of a PVM 1353MD, literally jump cuts right past it! I guess if I cant figure that out though, I shouldnt be in there. I just wanted to examine the board and caps with my naked eye.
