Rainwater Harvesting with IBC Tote and Tarp - Wildlife Waterer
Вставка
- Опубліковано 7 сер 2018
- DIY rainwater harvesting wildlife waterer using an IBC tote, billboard tarp and an automatic watering dish. This definitely isn't fancy, but it is a good budget option for someone looking to harvest rainwater for animals, livestock or a small garden plot.
NOTE: I was really hoping to have some rainwater footage for this one but just didn't have rains that I could capture when I was filming this. BUT if you check out my 'rainwater tarp project' you can see rain footage and a better description of how it works. Here are some links to those videos.

Awesome job and you took the time and expense to help wildlife even better. People like you make this world a better place to live. Thanks
You’re a nice man setting up fresh water for wildlife. Well done mate.
i have always dreamed of having my own place. Not just me but before my mom passed we always dreamed of a house in the middle of no where since we have lived in apartments pretty much since i was born. One of the major things we wanted to do was be out in the middle of no where for the peace and quiet and so we could live off solar or as much as possible and to collect rain water for either cleaning or the lawn. Now that i found your channel i feel that i could carry out that dream not just for me but to help put my mom's soul at rest knowing that one dream we both had could and does come true. So thanks you have re-ignited that dream and one day i hope I have a beautiful home on some beautiful land like you do.
Very kind of you to care for those who cannot do for themselves.
Thank you for taking care of the animals. Now you need a live cam channel to film the animals,
So many people would not think of doing this.
When I get my land one day, I intend to do this as well.
I did not know there were deer in the desert.
thanks George... lots of them here actually :)
You deserve a cnn hero nomination... thanx for the ideas
Aww... thanks so much! I appreciate that! But good vibes from you folks that watch these videos is better than anything a news agency could give :)
Up here in Alaska we need to manage the amount of rain and your ideas are very helpful even though we have the opposite water extreme, events like washing the car or as camp fire water resource are still just as doable for a similar system. Thanks for the new video!
I can definitely imagine that... different but uses abound for both areas for sure! great to here from Alaska too!
This is genius but a real simple concept!! At first I was thinking to myself, why so far away? I figured it out when you were talking about the elevation. You had to get far enough away to get the water in the top of it!! Awesome project. I am getting ready to catch some rain off my gutters.
❤️❤️❤️❤️ Thanks for helping the animals
:D
Excellent, no software, no electricity, just works :-)
Thanks so much! I like to keep it as siimple as I can :)
Nice to see you Joe. Taking care of your visitor's ….. very nice!
Thanks M Lo!
Awesome that you are looking after the animals. Keep up the great work. Love the humor at he end. 👍🏻👍🏻😁
thanks Quintin! and glad you stayed to the end... I put it in for the folks that watched the whole thing :)
Thank you from Puerto Rico 👵
thanks! great to hear from PR! :)
I remember helping my dad and his friends build huge cement water guzzlers out in the Mojave desert back when I was a kid. This video just reminded me of those days, so thanks. Special thing you are doing for the local wildlife!
yes, there are some really cool projects making guzzlers/drinkers for the sheep other animals in the really arid regions
125' of trenching? That was a serious commitment! Thanks for explaining the design... it's incredibly ingenious! Great job, love all of the UA-cam videos!
Thanks Rob! but it wasn't a big trench... only 4-6" deep on average.... just enough to keep some dirt on it and out of the sunlight :)
A very kind and compassionate project for the wildlife. Thank You for helping them. 💜 I enjoy seeing your rainwater harvesting projects and am super impressed with the recycled use of the billboard tarps. It looks pretty green there for mid Summer. 🍀
Thanks Tami! Yes, those tarps are really useful... and as for the green in the desert... this is about as green as it is all year long. a couple months from now all that grass will be as yellow as can be ;)
very nice of you for taking the time to do something for the wildlife 👍👍
Thanks Claude! :D
Awesome man! Great creative rainwater IBC tote overview, and also loved to see that you did it for your local wildlife. You da man brother. 👍💪
And here you see the wild Joe seeking out water from a spring in the desert near a homestead. Ever watchful and sometimes followed by the black Olive.
lol... almost with a Marty Stoufer narration voice too!
homesteadonomics 👍🏻
LOL!! :)
Great ideas. Very nice of you to be so considerate of the wildlife. Applause to you sir.
Thank you Raynola! That's really nice of you to say :)
That is way cool and such a nice thing to do for the critters around your place. Good on yeah!
Thanks Greg!
Absolutely love how this turned out. What a great looking refreshing spot in the desert!! The girls loved seeing the bobcat, and other wildlife too. How handy to have that when you’re thirsty! 👍🏼
Maria Jamison thank you Maria! I tried for multiple nights to see if I could capture video of the bobcat....they are just so much sneakier than the deer I guess...I had 3 cameras looking at the waterer and only one caught it. Btw...Marley made a card for Lorelei but wanted to find something to make it more special....like the alpaca animal...she can’t decide...so let her know something will be coming 😀
WELL DAMN THAT LOOKS JUST
LIKE A (NATURAL) WATERING HOLE
SURROUNDED BY ROCKS....
VERY LUCKY ANIMALZ THAT HAPPEN
TO LIVE NEAR YOU....
I TIP MY HAT TO YOU SIR. 👏🏼 .....
Thank you Billy!
You're awesome! Such a generous lifesaving gift you have provided for the wildlife! Not to mention how smart you are to have figured that out! As always, I'm so impressed with every video you do! I just wish you posted more often! ✌❤🇨🇱
Thanks Teresa! I appreciate it... and yes, I wish I could post more often too... a goal of mine, but the videos just take so much time depending on the project...and I don't want to put out too many videos where I don't provide some value. Once I finish the trailer project it will free me up to do some smaller projects and do some more creative type videos :)
Thank you for doing this. I've been looking for a simple water catchment setup for wildlife. This will work perfectly. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and caring about the wild animals. I definitely will check out your other videos. You, sir, are a hero. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
From one animal lover to another, i salute you sir!! Thats very nice of you to do that.
thank you Grimrpr!
Dude you are awesome!!! Am from Russia. You are comletely changed my opinion about US mans. Best of luck with all your projects!!!
That is very kind of you to say! Very much appreciated and great to hear from Russia!
Joe
thanks for giving the wildlife a drink !! Great videos
thanks for checking it out Justin!
Ingenious and helpful to the wildlife.
thanks Myles!
That’s awesome! Nice to see people giving back to wildlife!
thanks STeve!
Had no idea the Arizona desert had a Sasquatch!🤔😂jk. Very NICE setup Joe, and right now I know the animals thank you and I do too. Very educational. 👍👍☆Jay.
haha... yes we do... and he's getting bigger by the day eating donuts...lol! (hoping to reverse that course soon... but just one more before I do;)
homesteadonomics, LMBO!!😂😂 Joe I hope those donuts are Krispy Kreme??? LOL 🍩🍩
Potintal meat for doing some plumbing. Slick setup!
yes for sure!
What a great project! I'm sure the wildlife loves it!
thanks! so far they really seem to be taking to it... I'm guessing it will get even more popular as our monsoons slow down and the normal 'dry' state sets in
I reckon your daughter is spoiled, on show and tell days at school she can turn up with her own "Attenborough" style video show, and blow all the other kids out of the water ??? How lucky is that, to have her own wildlife show in her own backyard and on video, all hale to her, this is the way to make kids aware that we have some wonderful things around us , and to appreciate how truly great nature is ??? All the best from Aussie as usual !!
Thanks Gary! She's literally the light of our lives... but she doesn't care so much for these kind of projects as much as she does for me helping her build fairy houses...lol... just different priorities for a 5 year old little girl :)
Dog tested and approved!
Im up in Oro Valley and working on the same projects. Thanks for the guidance and tips!
Thanks Sally! great to hear from my local folks!
Joe
Now I feel like a Luddite, with my bucket filled bird bath, lol. It all "fills" the same purpose though, and I like your ideas.
Love that you are giving back to the wildlife. Especially, water.
Thanks Ryan! Much appreciated sir!
Joe
homesteadonomics you’re most welcome. I love your content. You truly are blessed, with a gift for instructing. I’m going to have to look into our local laws on rainwater harvesting.
Ps..Love seeing those animals drinking and having access to water. You are a great guy.
me to! thanks again Kirk!
Joe
So awesome joe! I feel like you would love building and keeping a pond with koi fish. Your daughter would love it too 👍
I have thought about it often... the only thing is the water loss due to evaporation down here... gotta be covered to keep it from drying up. BUT if I ever get more catchment surface I might just do that :)
4 legged gopher the last one. He decided he
go fer" some waterr too. Good video
A big thumb up indeed.
thank you!
Totally awesome, Joe. I'm here in the Midwest (damn cold in the winter!) and my neighbors in the subdivision think I'm a bit crazy for installing rain barrels! I love your setup and the homestead- very jealous! Keep up the great work and thanks for sharing!
Thanks SWT! haha... yes, most folks just can't understand something that isn't in the 'cookie cutter' goggles that we in the west have been accustomed to seeing :)
Joe, just curious, do you, or have you considered, a Solar PV array for the homestead?
Sorry, I just watched Q+A #4 where you answered my question. Love the T-Shirt, The Salt Lick makes some damn fine BBQ- best brisket I've ever had (wish I was still in Texas). Take care, Joe.
Beautiful. Nature an I are thanking you.
thank you for checking it out!
thanks from saudi
great to hear from Saudi! :)
Very cool!
thanks!
Simple and serves a great purpose... I'm amazed how you live in wilderness environment...
thanks!! :)
Me encanta ver tus videos, se aprende mucho
I love it! Seeing the animals, including you, is pretty special.
Thanks Jessica! That water was 're-fresh-ing' ;)
I like this idea. I'll have to setup something similar where we want more wildlife on our acreage. We don't plan on living there for a few more years and it would be a good way to hopefully get more deer and turkeys on our land.
thanks SM! yes, getting something set up early would be pretty cool... and if you had a camera on it, it would be fun to see what visited the waterer between vistis to the place :)
Good idea. I just accepted a new job so I'll have some more money for projects like this. This looks like a great winter project since we're in Texas.
Really neat system! Thanks for sharing this.
thank you for checking it out John!
Amazing ! Well done joe.
thank you David!
I love this video and the fact that you provide water for your wildlife..........very Cool!!
Thanks MD! It is a joy to see them coming in for a drink!
Excellent and great you are thinking of the animals.
Thanks for checking it out!!
Who would give this a thumbs down?? Two thumbs way up from me awesome video!
thanks Charlie! those are the unhappy folks.. they'd thumbs down a video with babies playing on clouds if someone posted it...lol
Ha ha. I did not expect you to drink right after that dog. Cool project!
haha... yes, you stayed to the end! Thanks Bruce! I like adding those little tid bits at the end to see if anyone stays :)
thanks for checking it out!
homesteadonomics Ha ha. I hear ya. Also, gross. ;)
Nice video Joe! Thanks for sharing it with us.😎👍JP
How wonderful.
Nice job on keeping the wildlife hydrated! I'd give you two thumbs up if I could!
Bravo! That is a kind act👍
thanks FF!
Joe
Love what you're doing man!
William Hill thanks William! Very much appreciated sir!
wow, what amazing work
Thanks Noemi!
If you have the height over the main holding tank one trick you can do to catch more water is a holding tank right at the collection point with large pipes connected then just the small pipe between tanks for a slower drain down.
Remember breather pipes at the top and bottom of the run, A cheaty way to do it without having pipe standing strait up is put a post to the height needed and run a garden or other cheap hose up that to act as the breather so if it gets damaged it is just a cheap hose to replace.
With a little planning you can have the space under a rain roof for storage/parking/workshop with the excuse of yes it needs to be that large as it is only 0.62 gallons per sq foot so in a light rain a large roof gathers a huge amount or Yes it needs to be that tall to get the height the gravity system requires to get water out to your flower beds.
Thanks Andrew! Lots of great ideas.... You have given me lots to think about for future modifications :D
Joe
Really cool that you took the time to do this for the wildlife. Great design, too:-)>
Thanks BnB!
I always enjoy and love your videos, Joe. Always something to learn and I love the Arizona landscape. And those boots of yours I like alot. Sending you all of my best from Canada
haha... yes, you definitely do love the Redback style boots... as do I! simple, comfortable and well made....love em!
I love em very much, Joe .
Great video and such a nice thing to do for the wild animals. Thanks for sharing and as always Keep Building👍
thanks Todd! ... I will for sure! :)
Love it. The taste of sweet success!
Very enjoyable video of the "wild"life and the 'ole watering hole! Thanks! :)
haha... yes, that wildlife can be pretty rough looking at times :)
Very cool, that is a nice thing you have done.
thanks!!!
Finally another upload!
haha... yes, they take a while to make when the projects are bigger... but eventually I'll get to filling some smaller projects in between:)
Great work . . . . unselfish . . . . Rog
thanks Rog!
Wildlife guzzlers are most excellent. Your in the desert but it still looks fairly lush. I know your in Arizona but it reminds me of parts of West Texas.
Thanks! Yes, it is lush right now, due to the monsoons... but most of the year all that grass is basically yellow ;)
Really awesome video,great for wildlife.
thanks Daniel! they are seeming to like it so far!
👏🏾👏🏾👍🏾 taking care of all of gods creatures thank you 🙏
thanks Fadsad! :)
Great video as always!
thank you Felix!
Love watching your videos and such :)
Thanks Keith!
Great work
Hey great video! Just one small suggestion. Put a small stick in the water dish so small critters have a way out if they fall in(such as mice).
David Mason thanks David! Someone else mentioned that too...got a small rock in it now for just that reason:)
Joe, you are a good man and has a good 😊 heart ❤️!!!👍
Thanks Lebron!! you are really kind sir!
Love it! I was hoping a porcupine would stop by. Maybe next time. :)
Thanks Anita! We actually have some badgers that live somewhat nearby that I was hoping I might catch on camera... kind of a weird sight.. badger in the desert... but really cool too :)
Good job man. Greetings from Brazil
Good job to make collection of water where it might be scarce. keep them coming great idea!
Thanks Frank!
It’s been awhile. I love these videos!

Great video! Thanks!
Thanks Steve!
A awsume video I like looking at the animals I got something close in my backyard
me too... love seeing them come in .... kinda like a surprise everytime I check the camera :)
That's some really cool wildlife footage at the end there! :)
thanks Torrey!
Thanks for sharing!
thanks for taking the time to check it out!
Wow, you got footage of the rare "Lesser Spotted Manbeast" right at the end - well done, I didn't realize they were in your area......
.
.
.
.
I really enjoy the simplicity of your designs.
"manbeast'...lol... I hope my wife doesn't see that... then she's gonna be like " hey, manbeast... get that cleaned up!"
I DEFINITELY see a way to could put this to use! Just because it's fenced off doesn't mean I have to leave my livestock downhill thirsty. Thank you so much!
Hey Joe, good to know that javelina bite poly tubing; I'm more worried about rodents or cattle trampling it. I have about 500' of the stuff sitting on top of the ground down a hill up around Yarnell...probably have to bury that at some point. Thanks and cheers! Chris.
Hey Chris,
Yes, they will go for the water whereever they smell it. I was talking to a guy that had a water system get destroyed near Sonoita with the javelina chomping on the tubing. That's why the wire was added. But man, 500' is a long run... so maybe some lathe chicken wire cut while still in the roll would give you some 150' long strips to lay down over the tubing. .... but it might be tricky to cut
Sweet!
thanks Sasha!
Great Job! Your subscriber count keeps growing.
Thanks Chevy! It is, more than I ever thought. But it doesn't matter so much as the good subscribers... because with more subs, means more trolls too..lol ;)
