That really is an amazing story. Marlion Pickett playing his first ever senior AFL game and it's a Grand Final, and he kicks his first goal. And he was pretty close to winning the Norm Smith Medal (MVP of the game). Remarkable
Some context here. From the beginning, that running goal from Lance Franklin was the SECOND time he had done that, with Cale Hooker from Essendon running behind, chasing him. I want to say that the first time that happened as about a minute and a half before this actual play. 1:25. The Kennett Curse. Jeff Kennett, President of the Hawthorn Football Club had said something to the media when winning against Geelong (due to Geelong's blundering at the last moment to lose games) that Hawthorn "beats Geelong when it counts". From then, Hawthorn would go on to lose 11 straight matches against Geelong. This was one of the more famous ones, where Tom Hawkins has to kick the goal after the siren to win the game. You saw what happened. 1:53. Luke "Flyin'" Ryan. He started this passage of play on their defensive end, kicked towards the middle, got it back, kicked to the person at the half forward line, then ran all the way to the goal square to take that mark. That mark won Mark of the Year for 2020. 2:50. Last quarter of the 2018 Grand Final. Collingwood were up by 2. Dom Sheed's goal sealed the Grand Final win for West Coast, who actually were the underdogs to win this year. Sheed kicked that goal over Mason Cox. 3:30. As someone mentioned before, this is Marlion Pickett. Pickett was in jail during the first part of this season, got out, played footy in the VFL (minor league in Victoria). Played in the VFL Grand Final, and was the MVP of that game. One player in Richmond's team pulled out due to injury, and Pickett was selected for his first game in the AFL. You saw his first goal ever kicked in his career. Richmond won that Grand Final. Pickett is in rare company that his first game was a Grand Final, and won. At this time, he was a 1-game Premiership player. 3:53. The Toby Greene incident. You called it where he kicked Luke Dahlhaus in the face with his shoes.. Those are cleates as well, so he had some physical damage to his face. The controversy for this was that it was claimed that this was in a contest to take a mark, but footage revealed that this came from a handball, not a kick. He should have been suspended, but instead he was only fined. 4:31. Mason Cox. All I'll say for this one is to watch the video of "Mason Cox: Don't Believe in Never". That tells you the entire story of this performance. what made this performance even sweeter for him was that his parents and brother flew in from Texas to see this match, and stayed for the Grand Final. 5:18. Jack Higgins' Goal of the Year. He thought his way through the situation, and was able to get the ball to not only stay in the field of play, but kick it for a goal while he was across the goal line. The controversy came up with if he threw the ball up before kicking, because the ball has to be a steady drop instead of throwing up before kicking. The score review deemed it a goal, because if it were a throw, it would have been a free kick to the opposing team. 6:03. Josh Bruce hitting the post on a sitter of a goal. Not the first time it's happened to a player, and won't be the last. Smart comment by commentator Dwayne Russell: "That's one for the lowlights reel!" 6:55. Jeremy Howe's mark of the year in 2012. Great mark.. but he PLAYED ON!?!? Normally someone takes a mark, they'll go back and take the kick, or something so that the replay can be shown.. Howe played on after all of that, which resulted in a stoppage of play. 7:17. Sydney Stack's bump on Jack Viney.. all fair and legal but it sat him down like a little baby. 7:58. I believe that's Connor McKenna. He's from Ireland, so he grew up on Gaelic Football. A trick they have there is when you can kick the ball to yourself. In this case, that kick was/is legal in the AFL. As long as you don't run with it without bouncing it every 15 meters or handballing it or kicking it, you're good, even if that kick is to yourself. There was one where Courteney Dempsay bounced the ball, lost it in trying to get it back to his hands, kicked it by accident off the ankle, ball went over his head, and he caught it and kept going. All legal. The last one: I don't know if Shai Bolton took Mark of the Year on that one, but he's a short guy who took the mark over 3 tall Geelong defenders. There ya go, now ya know!
Young Buddy Franklin and baby-faced Tom Hawkins are now veteran forwards but those clutch goals early in their careers really established them as premier players. Buddy repeated that goal almost to the letter years later at the Swans and as you know, he has over 1000 goals now. The guy who kicked the other player in the face is Toby Greene. He ended up rubbed out for 5 games and the AFL introduced the "Toby Greene rule'' so players could not shove their stops into another player in a contest. The one where Jack Higgins scoops it around the post to kick it through was an anomaly and was awarded a goal. Technically, he threw the ball but it was an extraordinary play. I think it was goal of the year.
Tom Hawkins from Geelong is an unselfish forward. He has played 325 games and kicked 725 goals, however he often hands off the ball to another player for them to take the shot on goal. He could possibly have anywhere between 800-850 career goals if he took more kicks himself. Toby Greene split Luke Dahlhaus face open with his boot after that kick to face. He is good but definitely earnt a reputation as a dirty player with more than just that incident.
Yep 5:32 counted, his foot and the ball was technically within the boundry line when he kicked it!! A incredibly Mad goal!!! And also that day when Mason Cox dominated the oval, he won the admiration and respect of the whole damn country. Even know Richmond hated him that day cause he was pretty much responsible for ruining their the chance for a grand final, even they had a new found respect for the big American Pie!!!
4:08. That guy is Toby Greene . One of the dirtiest players . Have a look at one of his videos. You’ll understand but ! He’s one freaky player also. Very good player !

It always brings me a smile when I see a foreigner enjoying our game ❤

G'day mate, your team played last night, well worth a watch.

3:52 Is easily one of the greatest Marks I've EVER seen! 🥰❤🥵🤕🥴
4:08. That guy is Toby Greene . One of the dirtiest players . Have a look at one of his videos. You’ll understand but ! He’s one freaky player also. Very good player !
Sorry mate, I should've said in my other comment, Brisbane v Melbourne
