AD getting architects to explain almost every existing buildings in NYC is my favorite thing to watch.
Yep, very fascinating content. A guilty pleasure for sure💕
ADD*
right! i can listen to this dude all day. he makes engineering and architect so simple. and its really not lol
Come on 666
Well, it's been my favorite thing ever since I found it anyway. 😍😍
I can't even explain the amount of joy I get from his videos. The perfect blend of detail for architecture nerds + history nerds + real estate nerds, while being enthusiastic & entertaining. Not an easy feat.
He also fosters interest in the subject of archiecture for people like me who never thought about it before! He's engaging and very knowledgable, while stile being relatable. He's great!!
@@malloryg4251 If you told me someday I would be enthralled watching videos about architecture, a topic I know nothing about, I would say no way, but here I am.
👏👏👏👍👏👏👏👍
So true....
Hands down, my favorite skyscraper.
An icon of Art Deco.
I agree. Unfortunately I lost my view of it when tall buildings obscured it. I still have a view of the Empire State Building, which is also gorgeous. I love the way the appearance changes with weather conditions.
Me too I love it
I would love to see an Art Deco series with this architect outlining all of the phenomenal examples of Art Deco architecture, vehicles, etc.
Hellsyeah. They could do bauhaus buildings of tel aviv too.
For some: "etc" I recommend doing a google image search of 1930s radios. Both the wooden cabinets and the Bakelite might just blow you away.
@@drphosferrous No you arent in charge of anything thank god and god bless hair and cat hair thank you goodbye
@@TimPerfetto you dont like bauhaus buildings?
@@drphosferrous I love bezoars do you have one for purchase
I could watch this man all day. Michael, you are truly a brilliant storyteller and teacher! I want more!!
My favourite building in the world, I have so many prints and images around the house, nothing like it!
I wrote an academic research paper a couple of years ago (for my Master's degree) on Art Deco architecture, especially so the designs of Joseph Bell DeRemer and the architectural dream team of Charles Buechner & Henry Orth. Those talented architects did an abundance of architectural work in North Dakota and Minnesota, most of which is still standing and still in use. The Chrysler Building in Manhattan is a perfect example of the beauty and style of the Art Deco era. This video was a delight to me, a nerdy history and architecture fan. Thanks!
I love the design is older skyscrapers. So much art went into. It’s like they knew we’d fall in love with the beauty of the design.
"still such a distinct presence on the New York City skyline"... yes, like no other today, and forever... thanks for this Michael Wyetzner.
I'd pay good money to hear a full lecture from Michael. Everything he observes is incisive and explained concisely, and with so much enthusiasm. Great video.
👩🏻💻The crown on the Chrysler Building reminds me of the Statue of Liberty.🙋♀️🇺🇲
Agree
Repetitions of the head band with radiating light.
I love this man's videos about NYC architecture and I politely ask for more, whatever building it may be about ❤
I will join you. Great videos
That sunburst crown on the very top of the building, will never be beaten for its beauty. I can not think of a more stunning Art Deco Sky scraper.
OMG yes. Perfection
I absolutely LOVE Art Deco design!
The Chrysler Building is just one of so many NYC buildings that make me get stars in my eyes.

The Chrysler building is my favorite structure all time. So beautiful, classy and iconic. It's a shame that public building tours aren't offered anymore. Great architectural breakdown!
I like when AD brings on Wyetzner to explain things. He breaks it down so that everyone understands it.
I love the way you explain architectural history. I am interested in the RCA Victor building on 51st and Lexington ave.
As someone who grew up in NYC its easy to get "blind" to these marvels after awhile. The pace gets you focused on specific things, and you can forget to stop and appreciate the history of this amazing city. Michael Wyetzner breaks it down so well, and you can see his excitement.
2023 starts by learning they aren’t gargoyles! I love Michaels videos.
Landscape designer here; I’m OBSESSED w/ this building.
It is the most beautiful building ever built. Thank you for inviting me to tour, inside and outside.never will another building ever be built with such detail.🕊🇺🇲💕
New jersey
The two times (so far) I've visited NYC, I've said that the Chrysler Building 'flirts' with me - because it seemed that whenever I looked up, I could see the crown (or more) peeking around the buildings I was surrounded by at the time. The next visit I make to NYC, I will finally make a pilgrimage to my beloved Chrysler Building.
i always thought this too as a tourist! it always caught my eye! i now work at the chrysler building, talk about a full circle moment! but i'm replying to say that they sadly don't let tourists in :( always makes me sad when tourists walk in with starry eyes and are turned away immediately, i hope they open it back to the public sometime soon!
@@AnneLilyy Noooo! :sobs: So you're saying I need to find someone who works there and can smuggle me in? :laughs:
What a gorgeous building. I live to see and learn about the details and the Art Deco style in particular.
We need more art deco sky scrapers!
Go see the Petronis Towers, they are amazing!
I love Mr Wyetzner's videos and could watch and listen to them all day. It'd be awesome to tour NYC or any city with him and learn about the architecture of all the buildings and houses. Thank you for these videos!
I would watch Michael Wyetzner talk about a bus shelter, his knowledge, enthusiasm and passion make him the perfect teacher.
Having knowledgeable people, explaining with passion a topic is very refreshing in a bland internet! Thank you and loved this.
Every time I see one of Michael's videos published I'm so thrilled. Thank you for this great series, I learn so much!
The Chrysler building is by far my favorite structure in New York City. Love this video!
It's a shame this iconic building will be blocked when the new tall building gets completed that will apparently have a higher rooftop than CPT which is currently USAs highest rooftop
May not be the tallest, but it's still the coolest.
If it was just a block away it would be fine. I’m against restrictions, but we should have a minimal protected zone around certain landmarks.
I disagree. It will be interesting to see the built heritage on that section of 42nd street when 175 Park Avenue is completed. Well, the whole stretch of 42nd street is a gold mine of architecture marvels.
I could not agree more! My only hope is that the developer, similar to Vornado and their planned series of towers around Penn Station, may be getting cold feet about constructing such a gargantuan tower in this work from home era.
@@EliF-ge5bu blocking an iconic building like the Chrysler building is not something to be fine with. You can disagree that's fine, but that new super tall building should be built at least a block away, blocking my favourite building in New York City is such a shame
Such excellent videos. How about a series highlighting surviving Art Deco buildings in New York?
I can only dream that one day art deco would be reborn
(and One World trade Center gets a twin to finally repair the New York skyline)
I had no idea that these videos existed... my new favorite thing to watch on Saturday morning!
I truly enjoy this architect's various videos on the AD YT channel. I hope there's many more to come! I'm learning a lot of terminology and enjoy seeing America's most beautiful and historical buildings.
Michael Wyetzner is SO good at this. Thanks.
Kudos to whoever does the archival research and original graphics on all of these videos as well.
Thank you Architectural Digest for this wonderful video on the iconic Chrysler building in New York City. Very well done.
10:37 He's being polite. Most newer skyscrapers in New York have forgettable silhouettes to say the least.
Art Deco, like Expressionist Art in film and painting, was a very modernist departure from pre-World War I schools of design, as there seemed a strong desire to leave a traditional 'past' behind, and look to the future. I think they're the answer to the Bauhaus style, which left a sense of 'delight' absent, but which Deco embraced. The Chrysler building is loved by people who have never been to NYC. Thanks for the tour, and for the terrific breakdown of the elements that define this wonderful building. :)
frank lloyd wrights midway gardens is one of my favorites and it is so tragically underdocumented and unrecognized. an unsung masterpiece. love the chrysler building, especially crossing over from brooklyn at night, new york city at night in general, but the chrysler building in particular.
When I lived in New York City, for a while my dentist had his office on the 72nd floor of the Chrysler Building. The view out the window (one of those triangle windows at the top) showed the curvature of the earth. Just fascinating! The lobby is gorgeous.
That’s Bollox. A cute tale but not possible.
You’d need to be lots higher, curvature of the Earth is visible from about 35,000 feet! Chrysler building is less than 1000 feet.
Anyway, how the hell can you see the curvature if you can’t see the horizon?
Liar, delusional or idiot?
@@JulieWallis1963 So you're denying what I saw with my own eyes, not once but many times? Well, maybe you should go up to the 72nd floor of the Chrysler Building yourself before you debunk what I saw.
Love the Chrysler Building! My grandfather worked in it at some point in his career. I would have loved to have been able for him to give me tour of his office and the building overall!
The opening titles from Someone To Watch Over Me has a great night time shot of the Chrysler Building.
My favourite building in NY! I always stop to stare at it when I visit. I love all the art deco details and stainless steel. I also got a couple of figurines for my house haha
The top of the building reminds me of the Papal Tiara.
Or, the crown on the statue of Liberty.
Excellent! Love the general discussion of the art deco movement too!
Chrysler bldg. is my favorite in NY. I had the pleasure of going to School for several months in that building. It was the only time I was excited to go to school, walking up to and into that building every day was magical. Just after that, I got a job just 3 blocks away on Lexington Ave. Walked out of Historic and just as beautiful Grand Central, to view the Chrysler Building everyday, was inspiring and at lunch, walking past the Waldorf Astoria.
In terms of style and substance, the Chrysler building stands above all others. Just gorgeous to this very day.
More of this!
More beautiful historic buildings, less millionaire houses.
Coming from LA, my interest in Art Deco was peaked by the Eastern Columbia Building, the Wiltern Theater and the former landmark, Pan-Pacific Theater. As beautiful as they are/were, none compare to the amazing Chrysler Building. The most iconic AD building ever!
Omg I loved this. Made my day!
Great. Like seeing an architect’s eye for design choices and their effects. Thanks!! Happy new year!
Thank you for your wonderful presentation of the Chrysler Building. It has always been one of my favorite buildings in New York city. Ever since I was a kid, I would look up at skyscrapers and admire them from below.
This was insanely cool to watch. Love love love Art Deco, and now it's completely obvious to me why the Chrysler building truly is my favorite building in New York.
Toronto's Gooderham Building, which predates the similarly-shaped Flatiron Building in New York by a decade, is certainly one of the most iconic buildings in Canada. Its unique, charming style would make an excellent subject for a breakdown by AD.
Love, love , love this! ❤ historical architecture is my passion! I don’t care what building is next… I want them all!
How about the Woolworth Building? AD has a video up on just the penthouse done in a very ooo-aaaa style, so the depth and context for the architecture itself could really use Michael's knowing eye.
This is a sign of architecture as Art!

It’s wonderful that NYC has careful protected this incredible building and ensured that no building blocks it from view - a great example of NY caring for its heritage.
270 Park Avenue will change that when it's completed.
One Vanderbilt has intruded on 42nd St, altering the skyline in a very strange way, unfortunately a gem like the Chrysler is being engulfed. Great video.
This is a fantastic video !!!
Absolutely fascinating !! I know so much more about this iconic building than I did before.
I love Michael Wyetzner's videos.
Thank you! The Chrysler has always been my favorite building. I was fortunate to live on 34th Street for 25 years and had a spectacular view of it from my apartment. This was a wonderfully informative and interesting video, thank you!
3 tripple explanation of the Fisher building, Penobscot, and the Guardian Building (also know as the cathedral of finance) in Detroit would be an amazing video for peak Artdeco. The Book Tower too if your feeling spicy!
Detroit has some beautiful buildings
I’ve been in love with the Chrysler Building ever since a middle school trip to the UN introduced me to NYC. One day I want to see inside. I make sure to walk around it each time I’m in New York.
The Chrysler always was and will always be my favorite NYC building.
Other buildings that I'd like to see you talk about...
The Met Life buildings on 23rd and 24th Street. You almost need to look at them as a pair. The tower had a distinctive exterior with huge Wyeth murals in the lunch room areas. And yet the newer building on 24th had an almost more impressive interior lobby. I'm so sad that they removed the connecting sky bridge between them. 😥
When did they remove the sky bridge?
Excellent video!
please keep it coming Micheal Wyetzner, I knew nothing about architecture, but Im learning so much with your videos🎉🎉
Rosario Candela's 1920s, Manhattan co-ops, please. He is credited with defining the city's characteristic setbacks and bringing sophistication to apartment living. The Chrysler building would have to be up there as the most recognizable building in NYC.
My mom used to work in the Chrysler building. I remember going to her office when I was a kid. Always holds a special place in my heart.
A masterpiece! No building compares to it. Art Deco perfection ! ⚡️
It's always been my favorite building. Thank you for the quick look inside, had always wished I'd gotten to see it in person. Great Video!
What a fantastic explanation/discussion of this iconic beauty! Riveting!
My absolute favourite building in Manhattan. I was lucky enough to visit when I was in NYC shooting backgrounds for Kubrick's 'Eyes Wide Shut'. Thank you for posting this video.
Great video! Sort of popped up randomly on my feed but well worth the watch.
Thanks Michael and AD for share with us this amazing and pedagogic video.
The Chrysler building is so iconic..it's favorite NYC building..nothing else compares
Thank you so very much for these videos. I am grateful and appreciate the knowledge and expressiveness of the presenter
I learned of the Chrysler Building in the video game Parasite Eve (based on the book) back in the mid-late 90s. In the game, it serves as the final area of the true ending of the story. You have to climb all 77 floors and every 10th floor houses a boss. The interior was nothing like the actual building of course, but every since learning of the building, the silhouette and it’s overall exterior design became something special to me. It would be about 5 years later I’d actually go to New York to find it and step in the entryway as it is of course off-limits to the public… and sadly I wasn’t able to find a good view of it from outside, but that’ll have to be for a future trip. I love this skyscraper and it’s become the standard-bearer of skyscraper design for me. I’ve yet to find another building that draws visual interest as much as this building does. It’s almost 100 years old now and every other building built these days just lacks making a statement outside of height and width. They might add interest to a cityscape from afar, but on their own and up close… it’s just another building full of squares that was designed with a ruler.
After having seen so many buildings in so many cities, I've developed a greater fascination in the offerings of the late 1920's. Those buildings just seem to capture my imagination more than those of the '30's.
My favorite YT channel by far! Please cover the Woolworth tower and the Flatiron building
I'm an architecture student right now. Hope to some day be as iconic as Michael
The best content on youtube about architecture 👍
Best part of this channel. Thanks for another great breakdown!
Fascinating, Michael, great job! Thanks for this!
thank you, this is my favorite building in NYC, it just glows compared to all the others. I am glad to see some interior shots. Nice description of the Art Deco aspects of the building.
Thank you for the video, I’ve known some new details about art deco style 🙏🏻
what a fabulous dissection of this building . thank you.
Outstanding video. This guy always delivers.
I don't know anything about architecture but I loved watching this video, and all the others with Mr Wyetzner. He can communicate his passion really well and make us as interested in it as he is.
Your videos are the best! I love hearing your architectural & historical insights. How about videos on the RCA Victor Building at Lex & 51st, the San Reno 145 CPW or the Apthorp? No matter what your next subject, we’ll be watching!
Thank you for the glimpse into architecture.
My very favorite building of all time! My first trip to New York was primarily to see it in person. New York very easily became my favorite place in the world!
I love the Chrysler Building - and I love Art Deco. I live in Australia and will probably never see it, but I'd love to spend a week watching it with a camera. It is definately one of my favoutire buildings. To me the Empire State Building as a whole not nearly as pleasing - although the decoration of the Empire State Building especially around the entrance and lobby is gorgeous. When I was a kid I actually though the Chrysler Building was the Empire State Building - I was so dissapointed to find out that the fabled Empire State was relatively speaking so plain.
I also love Michael making these videos - they are fascinating and to me a layperson they are educational.
Please keep 'em coming.
Excellent article, MW. Thanks for the share. All the best in 2023.
Should do before / after photos on buildings or land usage prior to these buildings going up
I love all of Michael's videos! Can't wait to see the next one!
I am loving all the videos telling us the story of NYC buildings! Please, keep them coming! One on the Empire Building history would be great!
I learned something new during a lunch break, thanks!
So glad you did this one!
Love Mike's vids.
Keep up the good work.✨
My favorite building in Manhattan skyline❤
