I remember when memes were just fleeting in-jokes that became something more and morphed and expanded into something exploitable for use in other contexts. They required lurking and understanding the background to really appreciate. Now a 'meme' is just 'anything funny I saw on the internet'. It's just a picture with 'when something happens' written near it. No creativity or specificity. Now people watermark them and monetise them. They're supposed to be anonymous so that they can become memetic aka 'viral'. Now everyone wants to make money and steal shit and repost shit without creating anything themselves.

@@freddie8128 The problem is monetisation. There are plenty of sites with a lot of user-generated content which is legally owned by its creators (or the site owners, depending on ToS). They don't try to sell this content or attach paid partner ads to it, and they don't mind if other people share or use the content (typically, that's the purpose of creating it). Taking credit for things you haven't made is bad manners and quite pathetic, but not really a big deal. Making money off of it, however, is stealing (in addition to being extremely scummy).
hi ethan can you do a video on how people on twitter literally steal content from a previous tweet and tweet it themselves for "clout" or their own retweets because its literally an epidemic and multiple people i follow retweet the same SENTENCE/TWEET just by various people. And also these people have thousands of followers for stolen unoriginal tweets and its so ridiculous i think it needs to be drawn more attention to. TY ILY
