MA practice should never be a source of discomfort to anyone. Physically taxing? Yes. But a source of discomfort that makes it nauseating? No. If the problem persists, then don’t roll with that person until the problem is fixed.
I live in a barracks and lack the ability to hang clothes on a line. I stick my gi in the dryer with heat. I been told that they will shrink if you dry with heat, so I check them after about 20 minutes to see if they're dry.
If your gi is not preshrunk, it will DEFINITELY shrink in a dryer. Even if it IS “preshrunk,” it will STILL SHRINK in a dryer, albeit somewhat less. What I do is get a gi that is a “size up” in some way. For instance, I am a “big” A1, meaning that a brand new (unwashed) A1 fits me just right. When I wash it, it won’t fit me anymore. So, depending on the brand, I’ll buy an A1L, A1H, or A2, and then wash normally in cold water with a hot dryer and dry it all the way through, so it typically fits me well enough after the 3rd (or so) wash.
Plain soap and cold water always worked best for me. You can always bleach it, as well. For others, Oxi-clean in addition to your laundry detergent works well. Of course, if you train on dirty mats, you’ll have a heckuva time keeping your uniforms white. In which case, I would recommend wearing colored ones. Often times, when I am teaching at other schools, I’ll bring a blue or a black one. I don’t want to potentially embarrass the school Owner if his mats are less than tidy, nor do I want to risk staining a nice white gi.
I’ve got a method that works really well. Wash you white GIs with OxyClean Whitening in Hot Water. Every so often use Mrs Stewart’s liquid bluing. Here’s where you gotta be really careful. Start the wash with hot water and the oxyclean and detergent. Add 1/4 teaspoon (like 4-5 DROPS) to 1 QT of water (an empty Gatorade bottle works good). Cap the bottle and shake it up. Slowly add the diluted bluing to the wash. If you have a front loader you can pull out the soap tray and dribble it down into the drain hole to add it to the wash.
Just train with it as often as you can. The movement and just the overall wearing of the garments will losses it and mold to your shape. I know this is late but in case anyone with the same question reads this.
Kama Jiu-Jitsu got it thank you. Btw it was a serious question. Thanks for the quick reply. My first 1 shrunk 6 inches all around and turns into shorts when I open my guard. Looks ridiculous so now I’m being extra careful

I think I recall hearing that fabric softener ends up reducing the amount of water your clothing can absorb and to use it sparingly.
some of them, Downy, especially. the Kirkland one doesn't seem to affect that as much.
Fabric softener clogs up the fibers in the fabric and keeps it from breathing.
Epsom salt can be used as an alternative.
