Bergen aviation spanner review

- In this short video I show some Bergen aviation spanners or Bergen aviation wrenches which I have been using for a couple of years on site. At about £35 these are a real bargain and can make undoing and tightening nuts and bolts much easier. I bought my set here- fave.co/2t7MzFL
Got a set of these myself, not used often but it's one of those tools that you really need when you need. Most mechanics will have a set, very useful for reaching belt tensioner bolts etc. in tightly packed engine bays.
Thanks for the comment ;-)
You just can't beat a good spanner review of a Sunday morning. . Bliss. .
I'm well impressed with these for the money, in fact I'm sure I have a set of Bergen impact hex bits too!
Thanks for the comment ;-)
SRM Solar radiation management Geoengineering sounds nuts to me.
I’ve been using these spanners for about 2 years on site and they are brilliant.
When you consider that you can buy a full set for about £35 fave.co/2t7MzFL
I’m very busy on site for the next 8 weeks or so, but have some videos to edit
and upload when I get chance!
I hope everyone has a great Sunday ;-)
U/H,recommendation is better than any advertising, and I take great store in your recommendations.
Thanks Benggo ;-)
Thanks for the review, in fact I have this set on my eBay cart for quite a while just haven't hit buy. Think I will now! Cheers.
You are welcome, they are great ;-)
Thanks for the comment
these are quite good for using in engine bays, breaking pulleys free etc
Thanks for the comments, Ryan ;-)
I've had a set of double rings like these for years ( I think their teng ) & when doing suspension work on classic cars they are always my first choice
Still think the Halfords ratchet spanners you previously reviewed are more useful. In fact I have just used them again.
These are more useful for me, especially when someone before you has used long series spanners to tighten a nut or bolt.
Thanks for the comment
i think they are top quality.
Thanks for the comment ;-)
i have that blue toolbox at 4.31 lol
LOL, I just use mine for storing unistrut nuts and bolts.
Got a set of Trident spanners like that a while back, wasn't sure of the quality of Bergen at the time but seems like i could have saved £60
Something i have found they are useful for is holding nuts in place when you can't fit your hand where the nut needs to go, a bit of electrical tape on one side stops the nut falling through the ring and sticks it in place making it easy to get the nut lined up with the hole.
Thanks for the comment ;-)
Great tip dude, I'll try it out next time 😊
I bought a set of these about two years ago and use them pretty much every day in a heavy industrial workshop. Great bits of kit, never missed a beat. Nice review 👍🏼
Thanks Davey, I'm glad that someone else has been using them and also found them to be good ;-)
Thanks for the comment
also the thing you have to watch out for with tools like spanners etc, is that in the automotive trade (I'm part of) there's an awful lot of fan boy behaviour when it comes to brand loyalty. When you have spent 10k plus on snap on gear etc people don't want to even contemplate that you can get decent tools for less.
A big one is halfords professional range, no they aren't amazing never gonna break quality, but they have a life time no issue warranty. and they can be anywhere from 2 to 10 x less than snap on
Absolutely. My mate used to call me a power tool snob because I always bought Bosch/Dewalt etc.
One day he bought a Silverline cordless drill and could not drill a hole because the drill bit was orbiting, he came and borrowed my Bosch SDS.
The tools I use on site are mainly Teng, Bahco, Beta, etc. I only own one snap on tools and that is a pair of long nosed pliers as they are just too expensive for me.
I often see the large boxes of Snap on tools for sale on ebay for £10k, if I had that kind of money to spend on tools it would not be on Snap on. I'd rather spend £3k and save the £7k for a rainy day ;-)
Thanks for the comment
Ryan & UHM you guys seem to be the last of the "Normal-Good-Common Sense" Generation!
Agree about the 'Normal-Good-Common Sense' generation. Try to be a member myself. Too many people out there blinded by labels and brands. Got Draper ring spanner sets from the 80s that have now had over 3 decades of abuse. Still good as new. Maybe they were made better then.
Yes I agree. I've been a Hgv mechanic for 20 years. I have had my halfords industrial boxes for that time and they have lasted. I do own snap on stuff but the prices are crazy and I wont buy it anymore. I am effectively paying to go to work. I started buying the odd Bergen item many years ago believing it to be German and good quality. I did actually recently discover that it is made in china along with US Pro, but I'm not complaining, I've always found the stuff fine, I recently purchased the US Pro version of these spanners for my father, he still maintains his taxi minibus himself at 70 years old and I thought they would be better for him because of the extra leverage. We are very pleased with the finish and fit. A company I used go work for used to take me out of the workshop if they were stuck for a driver, I sometimes used to collect pallets of goods from a power tool manufacturer in birkenhead near liverpool. I got chatting to a few men that worked there and they were showing me the different casings that would all go on the same drill. It was a real eye opener to see pretty good named brand casings along with Aldi powercraft. I have never purchased expensive power tools since.
ive had 3-4 bits of bergen tools lately, theyve all been decent, trouble is you end up with short , long , deep crank, shallow crank, straight ends, angled ends.....then you need two for getting at both sides.....you end up with a garage full of spanners!
I must admit that my spanner collection keeps growing year on year.
I made a 19mm open ended flogging spanner last week on site as I need one for a specific job that I do- video coming soon ;-)
Jusb1066 Their sockets aren't bad either for price, even just for a spare or 2nd set for a garage or workshop so you don't have to drag a set to & fro.
And as regards the Bergen brand, I'm really not sure about the company but I have seen these exact spanners also marketed under the Neilsen brand which seems to re-badge a lot of tools from China (and presumably elsewhere).
I was reading the comments near the end of the video, then the outro "sizzle" sound had me thinking my phone was about to blow up 🤣
Sorry about that ;-)
I can vouch for Bergen hss drill sets. sizes 1-13mm good enough quality, at low low price. Ive been replacing the smaller diameter drills as they wear or break (expected wear and tear) and the larger ones have all been fine (heavy use and occasional touch on the grindstone).
I can also vouch for their impact sockets which are as durable as any other I've used.
It appears they use a good tool grade steel without any fussy coatings, and packaging, although the spanners you have there are pretty well coated by the looks of them.
Thanks for the comment, I'm convinced enough now to try more of their tools in future ;-)
Love your reviews. They are always interesting and thoroughly trustworthy, something that is not always the case on UA-cam.
Thanks Tony, I'm glad people appreciate the honesty of the reviews.
Thanks for the comment ;-)
Nice review, I looked at these for sometime but bought the Neilson set instead due to the Neilson set included the 12mm with is a common size on Japenese cars which I own. Seem Ok so far.
Neilson look almost identical to Bergen, it would not surprise me if they were all made in the same factory!
Thanks for the comment
I agree. I just thought I would post to help those looking for a 12mm.
I have a set just like this from WELZH WERKZEUG ,8 piece set though, as it has no skip sizes (12 is normally) off of Ebay. I think I paid about £39.99 (they are more now, like £54.95). The set has been really good for the money. I use them for releasing auxiliary belts on cars and undoing the cam bolts on VWs/VAG, as they are straight and can make fine adjustments without much pressure due to their length.
Thanks for the info 👍
Just bought a set "US PRO" branded (I think they're the same). Had to use the "double spanner" trick to undo some bolts the other day and thought these would be a lot better!
Yeah, they are probably made in the same factory!
I love my set, they are mega-useful 👍
Not for me. I like my tools stamped. Lost me straight away. Aircraft engineer by trade, ex Snap-on dealer, and they don't look right.
These are fine for most people (for the money)
Thanks for the comment 👍
I have a similar set of spanners that I bought from a motor factors about 10 years ago, they are perfect for belt tensioners on cars/vans. Using a spanner hooked onto another spanner can be a little nerve wracking when undoing a tensioner..... Hah.
Thanks for the comment
They look top quality and more so the fact you've been using them for a couple of yrs already.
What is the machine you tend to use them on out of interest ?
Thanks for the video.👍👍👍
I use the 19mm and 24mm on bolts holding flanges together on steam/water/compressed air pipes etc.
When I was trying to describe the machine where I locked the spanner up on one side, it is a large industrial glass washing machine, made from 316 stainless. You can see some of the insides of it in this video- ua-cam.com/video/UQ2gbO2Wynk/v-deo.html
Thanks for the comment ;-)
Ultimate Handyman
Very impressive ! Thanks for the reply.
I've got a set of these, the 5 piece set. Unequivocally the best 27 quid I ever spent
Thanks for the comment ;-)
Neat spanner ring set or box end set here in the US. :P I like that the set doesn't skipped sizes.
Thanks for the comment David ;-)
They look like a good bit of kit. Another honest, straightforward review. 👍
Yes, before I bought them I searched the internet and could only find mixed reviews and some people even compared them to Silverline! The 19mm and 24mm have been used to undo and tighten flanges on steam pipes (normally very tight) and they have been superb ;-)
Thanks for the comment
More tool reviews please!
I'll try and do more in the coming months ;-)
Thanks for the comment
Nice set of spanners there, I might pick a set of these up. I recently bought a 1/2 inch 380mm 72 teeth ratchet for £15 and its got a really good finish and is solid! I'll perhaps have to do a review on it! thanks for doing the vid :)
Thanks for the comment
Ive had this set for a few years now, really good spanners for the money ideal for working along the side of car engines
Thanks for the comment
I have the exact same set, I use the 17mm for tap glands. The extra leverage is good when trying to undo the stubborn buggers.
Thanks for the comment ;-)
Nice review. I've seen these & thought about a set, they have a red set as well. Not sure if the red ones contain a different amount of spanners? I've reviewed a few Bergen bits. People tend to jibe Bergen stuff but then get impressed with the stuff once they try it. We couldn't find anything concrete on the company location either, just hearsay.
Thanks for the comment
Do they make an English version :-)
No, I don't think so ;-)
been looking at this set for about 6 months now, will eventually get it for the collection, as for the brand quality bergen is actually fairly decent, did a bit of digging around a year ago and found it to be German made. I've got a few things from them that have never let me down and held up brilliantly to constant weekend diy, a 6 point shallow 3/8 socket set, a 4 piece pry bar set, a few different kinds of pliers amongst other little stuff and I'd put them a slightly below the draper expert stuff.
Thanks for the comment Liam ;-)
If you're going to buy box ends, buy 6 point type. 12 point (or more) are much more likely to slip and round off corners.
You can't always get 6 point ones on where you need them though, we had this problem at work with a 3/4 inch drive ratchet and 6 point sockets.
Thanks for the comment ;-)
Thanks for the review Chez!
You are welcome, John
Thanks for the comment
Just bought some.
Brill review
This was my second most used set of spanners when I worked on site, after the Bacho ratchet spanners. They are superb for the money 👍
Thanks for the comment 👍
@@ultimatehandyman thanks I can't wait for them to come.
Adult in a sweatshop thing lol.
I got the Nielsen ones I think I may try a set of the bergen
But I love my Nielsen long double flex end ratcheting style
Thanks for the comment
👍🤓👍💪
Thanks for the comment Wayne ;-)
I have a similar set to this but by Mac tools cost me nearly 200 quid. But they were just marketed as long reach spanners. What makes the Bergen set "aviation" spanners?
I don't know, sorry.
I was just searching for long series spanners on ebay and aviation spanners popped up, perhaps they are widely used in the aviation industry?
It's just the term used for a long ring spanner, not really sure why. Presumably people who work on planes need long spanners a lot?
Because planes fly at 30,000 ft you need the extra length to reach up that high, duh
Do these tools have anything to do with the norwegian city Bergen?
I have no idea, sorry.
A few people have said that they are made in Germany.
Bergen and Neilson tools. Beware of the unsigned white vans that go around selling these two brands.
Thanks for the comment
Why beware?
I've never heard of Bergen tools. Are they available in the U.S.? Where are they made?
They seem to be available on Amazon- fave.co/2v67tT6
I have heard a few people say that they are made in Germany, but I'm not 100% certain about that.
Thanks for the comment
Ultimate Handyman You're welcome. I'm a retired mechanic (Asian cars) and firetruck builder. These would have been handy on the assembly line and refurb area instead of interlocking 2 wrenches. Thanx again. G-d bless.
Great video! Is there a reason they missed out 12mm and 23mm?
Not sure why there is no 12mm as most other sets seem to have a 12mm spanner.
23mm is a bit of an oddball size though, I occasionally use 22mm and use 24mm regularly but I can never remember ever needing a 23mm spanner.
Thanks for the comment
many sets miss sizes, 12mm and 16mm are not ISO sizes, but are JIS (japanese metric) sizes, so most sets are made for a particular market, its like screwdriver sets, you can tell when they are made for the USA market as they dont have any pozidrives in them.
Spanner is a spanner !!
Or a wrench if you live in the USA ;-)
Ultimate Handyman true..
Hello, I've commented seeking advice on one of your older videos about cutting aluminum. If you do get a chance to look into it, I'd really appreciated your advice. Many thanks.
Thanks, I have just answered ;-)
the worst spanners are them thin flat ones u get on like furniture or gym equipment flatpacks and they always slip off behind the nut ! DAMN annoying ,wish i didnt leave my ratchet at my parents
Yeah, they are crap.
I don't like the ones that you get pressed out from a piece of steel- or laser cut, but I guess they are designed to be used once and then thrown in the bin!
Thanks for the comment
they are also short to limit the torque you put on them, i used one on a baby gate, if you used a real spanner you would have damaged the gate too easily
