Calling all church pianists! (Or wannabe church pianists.)
A HUGE part of a church pianist's role is to provide appropriate background music during different parts of the service. I first learned how to play chords and songs while playing the piano in a church youth band.
Over the years, the skills I learned in that setting have served me well in so many other times and places. So it's definitely worth learning, even if you don't play in church and have no intention to.
Here are 3 ways to play beautiful background music at church.

Yes please! I was so excited when I saw this lesson.
I had to improvise this past Sunday as the preacher kept on talking . . . we never know how long that is going to take lol! So yes, I did exactly that - the same four chords over and over again and it was perfect. The best part about being a church pianist is that the attention is NEVER on me. I am there to SERVE, I am not the spotlight. Jesus is the spotlight.

Especially drummers who choose to join in during background music.
More worship leaders in general, imho. We are just providing the pathway for the congregation to worship. It's not about us at all.

Probably there is no such thing
Any work. Probably not minors though unless you're last song was in I minor.
I personally love the minor keys but majors are always uplifting
Oh and just a thought. It's always best to play in the chords of the last song just in case your pastor wants to sing it again. At least you're already there without having to do a key change and it will just flow beautifully. Just adds to the anointing 😁

1. Chords from the last song (transfer with arpeggio if needed)
2. Any Scale : 1456 in any order
3. Right hand: alternating sus chord (sus 2 or 4) and regular chord
Left hand: 1456 as you wish

My teacher was a beast at background music during church services. He also played theater organ at a silent movie theater as well which I think added greatly to his technique for background piano at services.

I learnt the keyboard when I was in school when I was 8. But then I got into painting and clay modelling by the time I was 12 and left the keyboard behind. It's been 15 years now since I last played the keyboard. I've literally forgotten everything including the notes in the sheet music. I got myself a new keyboard 2 weeks back and started playing again when my friend introduced me to this channel with the video of how to play Hallelujah. And I've been a fan of Lisa ever since. She's not only a talented pianist, she's one of the best teachers I've ever come across. The way she explains things with such excitement and joy makes me wanna learn more and more. My mom being a math teacher herself, can learn a few things from you perhaps. Thank you Lisa! And God bless!

I used to play just with my right hand and couldn't figure out how to play with the left hand, thanks to you i now use my left hand with a bit of difficulty but I'm improving, keep it up I injoy your lessons.

I play on our youth praise team and I usually just play the intro or chorus main chords for background but sometimes I don’t know what to do so this helps a lot!

I just paused this to comment how much I love love the piano content. I recently got my new Piano a Yamaha665GP not that I know very well but not a beginner either. I started to play at the age of may be 8 or 9 then I dropped out now in my 30's I decided to come back and do some serious learning and your channel has been such a great tool to start with. I don't know much of the music theory but I can for sure play as long as I know the melody to the song But I am learning so much and thanks to you. In may be 6 months time my hand dexterity will have improved I will come back here.....

Well said! As a choir master of our church's youth group and a musician that plays along with the choir, I would have to agree on this one. Sometimes as musicians, we tend to forget the purpose of why we are there. Church is not a place for gigs where you showcase your jaw-dropping skills and talents and sometimes many of the musicians often forgets this. There is time for everything - a time for rock and roll and a time for everything which you have demonstrate here on this video.
