He finds the essential notes, doesn't touch the other things that get in the way. I'm humbled each and every time I hear him.

A very long time ago when I was pretending at Berklee, an incredible bass player friend of mine asked if I wanted to see him play. Little did I know he was playing with Bill, tiny little club it was an eye/ear opener. There were those that were destined for greatness he was obviously one of them. Wonderful is all to say

Bill’s music is a true treasure. We caught the Harmony tour in a very small venue about a week before the pandemic blew up in early 2020, and that show was just other worldly. For those who haven’t seen him live, please do so at your earliest convenience and you will NOT be disappointed!

To me, a great artist is one you recognize from the first note. You knew Miles. You knew Coltrane. You knew Abercrombie. You knew Jim Hall. You know Scofield. They have a sound and approach that defines them. Frisell is that way. I don't have to watch a video to know it is him; it is wrapped up in his tone (that R&B and Country feel will always be there), how he uses space and time, and the material he chooses to tackle.

Rudy Royston, drums. Thomas Morgan, bass. Basically Bill's trio for the past decade. Both just sensitive as can be. Rudy Royston is probably my favorite drummer today. And that's with Chris Dave, Mark Guiliana, Brian Blade, and a _bunch_ of heavy cats.
