For example why we do not see many Black Colombian employed in the major retail and food stores. Also having a problem getting a taxi in Bogota. A lot of these items might be discussed among the Black people in Colombia but not in public.

I live in Brooklyn Ny a lot of the caribbean people and the more conscious African Americans wear their naturals. I hate straight hair weaves and wigs. She's adorable.
I appreciate your interview. Most other "black american men" who are traveling and posting vlogs, seem to only try and paint a rosey picture about race in the foreign countries. You are giving us real info from the native population. Much appreciated..

Marielle is an absolutely beautiful young woman of Afro-descent. My youngest son would marry her in a heartbeat! It's unsurprising that the numbers are skewed in respect of Afro-Colombians. It's probably the same in the rest of Latin America. I was shocked to see the vast number of Afro-Dominicans on my visit to the Dominican Republic who seemed to outnumber all other races. We in the UK were of the opinion that the people of the Dominican Republic were predominately Spanish looking due to the advertising.

Thank you Rosie in UK Appreciate the support. I travelled to the DR for many years before moving to Medellin. The race issue in the DR is a little complex. For years a lot of the Haitian moved to the DR for a better life and jobs. They began mixing with the Spanish. I know some very dark Dominican (even an old gf) but the will get upset if you mention any history or relations with the Haitian. Some of them look just like Haitian but never call them Haitian. They get insulted. Very complex situation.

I’m engaged to an Afro Colombian and everything in this video is so true. 6 years traveling to Medellin and black communities seem no to exist. The only time I found a black woman is when I went to the coast.

I used to live in Colombia the Afro descendent are about 20% and you have another 20 to 30 % are mixed with blacks in reality they are more than what the Colombian are telling you.
Mixed population is around 50% in Colombia

@@CarltonsTravelAdventures By the name Guillaume is probably of Haitian or Franco-Caribbean heritage and the responder is probably African American. These are not comments a Colombian black or white or mestizo would usually make.
I'm late here, but this is an idiotic comment; you would do yourself a favor and learn something instead of propagating bigoted ideas if you would look at the actual facts when it comes to racial identification in the Dominican Republic (or any other country in Latin America). There is an organization called Latinobarometro that every year does a survey about various issues in every Latin American country.
One of the questions they ask is the following: What race do you consider yourself to belong to? In the last survey (2018) only 14.7% of Dominican respondents chose "white", with kind of correspond to what's the actual number of whites in the country by other estimates (around 13.5%, so the answer of the survey is well within the margin of error). 66% answered Black, Mulatto or Mix which again reflects the actual data on racial makeup of the country.

Just choose "Republica Dominicana" and look at the answer to question S6 on page 46. Or you can choose to continue being an ignorant bigot, which I'm pretty sure is what you prefer.

I'm Colombian 🇨🇴 and I got in touch with racist in US. All fucking day people talk about race, like: That white guy, that black guy, that asian guy. when I grew up in Colombia wasn't like that was less tension and we don't focus in race all freaking day. They talk about melting pot in 🇺🇸 and you see towns mostly for spanish, towns mostly blacks, etc.
In Colombia we grow as person not as skin color person.

Great topic, Charlton. I wished the interview was longer, really enjoyable. When I was in Medellin (Bello). I didn't see many black faces working; except a security guard in the mall. I did visit a black barber shop in Medellin.
There are plenty of Black barbers in El Centro. I visit a few to trim my beard. That I do see. I did not want to make the video too long to lose peoples attention. I would prefer to do a follow up. Shoot me some ideas and questions. I want to have her on again.

This is a really good interview.
Your question about why you don't see many blacks working is valid, but she did say the black population in Medellin was only 10%, so that probably explains why you don't see a lot of black employees. There just isn't a large enough population to be noticable.
What I would like to know is of those 10% of afro-descendants that do live in Medellin, what of kind of jobs do they have and what part of town do they live in? I suspect I know the answer, but I'll reserve my judgement until you get an official answer, lol.
I'm definitely looking forward to your observations after you visit Chocó. I do know that Chocó has a much larger population of blacks, so I would hope things are better there.
And if you can find out something about the history of afro-descendants in Colombia that would awesome, even if it's just recommending a book or a website on black history in Colombia. As you mentioned, we had Jim Crow, segregation and numerous other atrocities, so I'd love to know what sort of things blacks in Colombia experienced, if they had similar issues throughout their history.

Thanks for the support. Choco is over 80% Black. Mariel believes the real number is up to 20% Blacks in Medellin and Colombia. Who really knows the actual percentage. Maybe 15%.

When I meet you Carlton I will give you the real scoop on this Colombian issue from the point of view of someone who for15 years lived it with a Spanish White Colombian Calena woman and her family who employed Black women for nothing almost like slaves and tried, Domesticas, and tried to impose this Old Spanish Colonial Hacienda view on this white dude from California! I feel! I lived in the US most of my life, I can assure that there is more racism against indigenous, Blacks and even mestizo in latinamerica than the US.
In most Latinamerican countries all the power, education, influence and wealth is concentrate in the European part of the population.

I would love to see you interview more afro Colombians male or females to get more insightful of the blacks living in Colombia.
The parts of not seeing many blacks in various work sites, ie, males, taxis, doctors, whatever, this is great and you should do more. My friend, Colombia is a multicultural country, there are different ethnic groups in every region. Medellin and Antioquia are historically majority white. The settlers of this highly mountainous region where mostly Spanish and Sephardic Jews. Due to the mountainous topography there wasn't a lot of mixing. So the black people that you see in Medellin are either born from parents from another region, such as Choco, or are from other primarily black regions of Colombia. Just a little info so you understand the ethnic history of Medellin. It is not historically a Black city, not because of prejudice, but because of settling. The numbers just aren't there, try to stop seeing it from an American perspective, and read some Colombian history, to comprehend the land you are in.
Wzup Miguel. Thanks for your comment. I believe you are kind of missing the entire point of the discussion about prejudice. First, I never said I was an expert on Colombia. I just stated my experience as a Black person living in Medellin and Colombia in general. I also said I experience a lot LESS prejudice than the US. I do not feel like I will be stopped and shot by a cop any day. The the reason I invited Mariel for the interview is because she was born in Colombia. She knows the history of Blacks in Colombia. I never said Medellin was a Black city. It has 10% to 15% Blacks. Could NOT be a Black City. Additionally, being a Black or White city has nothing to do with prejudice. Look at South Africa 25 years ago. That was a Black City. The discussion is about prejudice. Blacks are a minority in the US as well. Please take another listen to the interview. Weird because black People were all around the globe before everyone so we would need to really dig back in history to find out what TRULY happen to the black Colombians
@@CarltonsTravelAdventures Carlton I think you're the one that's missing the point. The point is that Medellin is historically a White-Mestizo city. Black people in Medellin are relatively new arrivals compared to the history of the city. Coming from Chocó and maybe Turbo/Montería etc. that entered the lower economic strata as economic migrants or in some cases internal refugees. This is not like the migration of Black US-Americans from Southern States to the North in the 18th century where since then they have been able to build a life and enter the middle class. You act surprised when you say you don't see black people in formal Medellin jobs, tell me one place in the world where recently poor migrants arrive into a new city and enter even the mid economic strata almost immediately and this in a country with 50% in informal employment (hustling basically) and 10% unemployment? Tell me. Now this is not to say that on a national level white supremacy isn't a factor because where's the semi-developed black city in Colombia where Afro-Colombians can go to find opportunities? Well there is none, closest being Cali that has about 25% black population because Buenaventura or Quibdó forget about it. Also 10% black population is about right because the whole of Eastern Colombia has practically no black people from Huila all the way up to Santander with Bogota having a similar context to Medellin where black migration is relatively recent.
Wzup Jony. Thanks for your comment. Always appreciated all points of view. I am really not sure what "recent" arrival means as far as years. I met quite a few Black Colombians in Medellin who said they have been living here for over 15 years. Maybe that is considered "recent". No idea. I believe I said more than once that Medellin is not a Black city. Could not be with 10% to 15% pop. Mariel recently received her Masters degree. I know it will take time for them to integrate and get better jobs. However, Jony lets be honest and for real. One question. Do you believe it will be a lot better for Black people in Medellin 20 years from now? I have 2 BAs from Rutgers and an MBA. I was in banking and I can always count the number of Blacks in top paying jobs in banking in the USA. am referring to the commercial side of banking, not retail. The US is no different. @@CarltonsTravelAdventures Of course 15 years is recent compared to centuries of Paisa culture. It usually takes about 3 generations minimum for migrants to truly integrate/progress and even then they're starting from the back-foot because some will still see you as "other", it's the same the world over. Of course things will change and black people will pop up here and there in more clerical, blue collar roles but it will never be equal. It was Paisa people that created their own socio-economic opportunities, black Colombians need to create their own wealth too despite obvious obstacles of institutional racism. My point is that years of colonialism got us to where we are today and the Choco is filled with black people because they were lands whites and mestizos did not want. However, they have an amazing opportunity, what other country in Latin America or in the States for that matter has a black majority state? Not one! Let alone one in such a strategic position, the entry to South America with coasts on the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, with abundant resources of minerals, platinum, gold, marine-life, plants for medicines and biodiversity. With the internet and easier access to higher education in the big cities or online, young black Colombians can learn, invent, create and generate wealth for their people and their department. If central government won't do it then they must.

Seems like you guys didn't touch on the subject that there is not a lot of opportunities for black Colombians here in Colombia. There's a pretty large divide based on class. Racism is alive and well here it just looks different than it does in North America

I have noticed on the Colombian mens national soccer team there are more black Colombian players than the majority mestizo/white players. It's similar to the states you will see more black American players playing basketball or football even though we are the minority.

That aside on this topic, personally I love the U.S. and served her for 19 years of my life! now in my 60's I'm so totally disappointed about where we are headed and who's doing the leading I no longer feel welcome. I know it's what they want but I'm convinced I don't belong. Having traveled half way around the world I can say there's no place on the globe that's perfect. Many are better than others but one would never know until they got off the couch and look outside. Don't ever rely on the media to educate you, its not their job!
Although I love my country I know it's not the best or only place a person can enjoy life. What struct me about Colombia is they need a James Brown to come along. Someone who can say, say it loud, I'm black and I'm proud who has the respect of people to the degree they listen.
You are old enough to know until then, until that guy or woman comes along, all we are doing is we were trying to be something we can never be.
Allow me to briefly explain, the key to it all is education not assimilation. I'm not saying separate people, I'm saying make the goal education, everything else will take care of itself. In the U.S. why do you think the cost of education is so high? Making it so expensive is a way to keep poor people ignorant. Ignorant people can be controlled much easier than educated people. Same thing is true anyplace in the world, its poverty and lack of access to a good quality education.
Frequenting Black owned businesses is wonderful but that won't bring people out of poverty. I'm not saying don't do it. Look, just go back and listen to what James said in that song. if you don't know the song, listen to understand where I'm going with this.
In this case the key is the young, we have to fight for them. To keep them off drugs, to keep them out of jail, to keep them free from having babies at a young age so they have a chance to have a life a real prosperous life.
We need to make sure we teach children how to add, subtract, divide and multiply. Teach them how to read so they can understand what others think and write so others can understand them and speak properly so they make a place in the world.
Here's the truth, with those basic skills a person can become a doctor, lawyer, engineer or scientists or any dam thing they want to be.
All a person has to do is add to those basic skills what I call WANT TO, DESIRE. The burning need to achieve what they want out of life!
Anything anyone has ever accomplished started with want to. With the want to comes the how to and that's when this world changes.
I want to encourage you to keep up the good work, the world needs more people like you!

officially, racial census in Colombia is supposed to be based on self-identification. but as she said, many times the people doing the census would just not ask the person how they identify, so they would just decide how they wanna classify the person themselves. and a lot of these census officers do not have proper training on race issues so they would choose the category based on their own perception. as she said, a light-skinned Black person might be classified as mestizo (which pretty much means white) by the census officer even if they themselves identify as Black/afrocolombian

Only 2 black politicians for 20% of the population. The USA may have it's faults, however it is still the best country in the world for me.
Only 2 mandated by law in the senate i.e. those places cannot be taken up by other colombians but there are more in the government overall although still underepresented.

the strongest black group is in america and they don't even like self so they will be erased in several generation like blacks in argentina. that's leaves the lost cause called africa. it's not happening.

I hardly noticed any black people in Medellin. I think I maybe saw 2. I looked into it and that is when I realized black Colombians are mostly off in the Pacific Coast. I would like to visit one day.
I did a trip to Choco. Majority Black. Nice place but very poor. There are Black people in Medellin. Go to Park San Antanio on a Friday at 5pm.

Also you might laugh at this, in Colombia alot of us have mixed with spanish, black and the indigenous. For example my great grandmother was a black woman but some might say I look white/Hispanic. We live together. However I am from Cali and that might be more of city thing.
Cool. I had no idea. I thought you were White/Hispanic myself. Lot of people have some Black mixed in somewhere down the line. Most do not want to admit to it though. LOL. Thanks I like Cali for that mixture of people. It is just too small.

Correct. As I stated I was speaking from the point of a Black American ex-pat. I live in a White strata 5 area. I said I do not experience a lot, which I do not on a day to day basis. I do notice things but not to the degree of living in the US. People do not grab their purse when they see me. I wanted to dig deeper and hear from a Black person who lives in Medellin or Colombia.
My first option was a Black Colombian who stated there was no issue with race in Medellin. It was not a big issue in his mind, but as we spoke more I could tell he was more nervous of losing clients because he is in the service business. I finally told him I could not use him.
If you remember I started by saying there is prejudice in every country. China and Japan worse.

Wzup nanah. You do not need to know Spanish to visit but it does help. If I were you I would load duolingo and learn the basis stuff and it will make your experience a lot better but don't let that stop you. Google translate works well here. If you stay in Poblado you will meet tons of gringos.

Part of why the US looks down on Venezuela and Cuba, is due to their social programs that have their black communities doing better than those in other Latin American countries relative to their general populations.

Hi I worked as a taxi driver in London and the Black Cab drivers are mostly white and the mini cab and Uber drivers are mostly Asian and Black African so guess it shows how multicultural London is!
