That was very interesting to hear. That’s my favorite album along with Crimson. The ironic thing for me is that I feel that the grit to his voice just adds to the character and vibe. I’d imagine that was factored in when mixing it too to go all in on it. Very cool to hear Matt talk about the backstory of this album. Also RIP Jerry Finn too 🎛️🪽🪽
I noticed his voice was different but always thought it intentional and def thought it added to the greatness of good morning...my fave show ever was in Philly when they did good morning and crimson full cds..no bullshit no nothing..it was so great
Good Mourning was my introduction to the band. Randomly bought it when I saw it in the new release area. Being a horror and punk rock junkie, it kinda called out to me. Still one of my all time favs by them.
I loved Matt's voice on Good Mourning. We've Had Enough was the first Alkaline Trio song I ever heard and I remember thinking "Holy shit this dudes voice is awesome" and wanting to be able to sound like that.
I first saw the Trio in summer 2001 opening for Blink-182 along with Newfound Glory. I walked into the venue right as they started their set. Matt told a hilarious story about his run-in with a local ice cream company questionably called Whitey's. 😂 After the show everyone was buying Blink merch, but I went straight for 'From Here to Infirmary" and never looked back. I learned how to play the bass while playing along with Dan on the stereo. I owe so much to that band; one of my all-time favorites. Goddamnit, has it been 23 years already?
i would argue as a LONG time listener of alkaline trio, that album with jerry's production was their absolute best. all the subject matter, matt's shredded vocals and his pain adequately puts the listener into his headspace at the time. every time i listen to good mourning it gives me goosebumps, maybe because it's my favorite album of theirs, or it's simply put raw emotion and addiction baring itself to light. matts uncanny ability to speak pure unadulterated feelings of a failing relationship and suicidal ideation mixed with drug use and alcoholism was so real and easy to understand. it's almost like a eulogy, like he wasn't planning on living past making that record, pouring everything out hoping to see or feel anything. for that album alone i thank matt, it really helped me through so many dark times, without it and maybe i'll catch fire, i'm not sure if i would still be here.
“Connect to a three volt, I hope your battery dies.” I’ve always wondered if Davey’s Kill Caustic lyrics were about Matt and his ex wife whom D also dated. I know it is none of our business, but that song is permanently in my soul like so many of AFI’s songs ❤
the irony is that while Matt still doesn't get any pleasure from 'Good Mourning' - it still brings pleasure to so many people - while of course he'd prefer if he shared in that pleasure - it would've sucked a lot more if no one liked it - it would've really been all for nothing

My intro to Trio and now they’re my all time fav band
That's my favorite album!! Lol. Thats crazy!
Personal preference. His Halloween Live at the Metro singing/ screaming voice is magical. Bad for the throat tho
Good lord I love that album. But yeah he definitely had some grit on his voice there, makes the album even more badass. Glad Skiba is healthy tho.
Love Good Mourning, thanks Matt.

I actually love his voice on that album but I get it
the frog in his throat on 'Good Mourning' does have a quaint charm - but I get that it sucked for him & still kinda does
