Thank you, you're really doing a fantastic job at demystifying practice and putting things in perspective. Gismo has such great personality. I first learned about a lot of these guys not knowing even the basics of music theory via Paulus. I mean you have these world class musicians, some of the best in the world on their instrument and they have all this knowledge but it's all in their ears and their fingers. It blew my mind to realize that (I was also saying at first that there's just no way that they can play all these complex voicings but not be able to name any) it also opened my eyes and made me aware that you can think about and approach music differently.
Gismo sounds great singing. Its just like Birelli, the Gypsies have innate musical abilities, not ALL of them obviously, but most of them. And the same goes for horses, they are GREAT ( or were ) with horses and were excellent blacksmiths. I know this as fact, cause I come from a family of England blacksmiths. These small groups have been mixing these musical genes for centuries. Its like any physical species would adapt in nature. I wish had more time to watch ALL of these type videos they're excellent. I use 4 fingers for diminished runs. There's one run that uses the pinky and the 3rd, I stole it from Yngwie Malmsteen. Christian, another video in itself was how Yngwies, diminished runs come from Gypsy Jazz.
GREAT interview! This is one the most insightful lessons about music I’ve ever seen.
Long before we understand the rules of spelling and grammar, children learn by imitation and memorization, how to speak. I think the same can be applied to music.
Furthermore, it’s wonderful to hear a musician/teacher really get to important questions (“What are you thinking when you are soloing”...etc).

A classic interview, thanks. For me that is the perfect format - hearing a brilliant musician perform and then asking the questions most musicians and music learners would ask them if they only could. It also helps that Gismo is very thorough and articulate in his responses.

Totally true. The great players don't think about theory, they think about making great music. But all the theory is contained within their playing. Just learn music from the greats and you have all the theory you need at your fingertips. Completely agree
What a great interview! I'm also so pleased about what you said about the German custom of dubbing films and series, it's so annoying. Thank goodness we don't do it in the United Kingdom. Itr's great to hear Dutch, Norwegian, Swedish in the original, otherwise we lose a great help in learning the languages.

I agree with you and John, I don’t know many scales and I feel like I don’t really need them. Django didn’t knew “scales” and he’s the greatest of all, so there must be a method to play beautiful solos without thinking in terms of scales. But, also
I think it depends on what kind/style of music you gonna play. It is pretty hard to play modal jazz without a strong scales knowledge. 😊
