The best game on the Playstation bar none. This has to be one of the best examples of an intro actually getting the player emotionally involved in the game, it gives you a sense of pride in the Colonial Navy, and hatred of the League. This game was the game of my childhood, it will never be forgotten.
Still my fave ever game. I love how they put the politics and propaganda into both sides of the fight, but when you play, you see they're both awful and bitter, like pretty much all wars, I guess. You realize it's just two factions out to murder each other because of previous injustices on both sides.
I love this intro; since when you get deeper into the story you realise how much the character Mertens was indoctrinated, and also the Colonial Navy ships look so much better than the League
Sweet. I remember really loving this intro back in '98. It feels like so long ago, but I was 18, which isn't THAT young, but according to my memory of video games (which is longer than my memory of real events), it was like 300 years ago.
I watcher this intro more than 100 times. Absolute No1 in space fighter simulations. Capital ships and fighters look fantastic. I always wanted that they make some dreadnought or destroyer playable. Storyline is very good and turnover on end even better.
Tbh I applaud any game series that throw your perceptions of who is the good/bad guy on its head... be that through the narrative or just playing as both sides and seeing their perspective. X-Wing and TIE Fighter did this rather well.
Anton Dvorak (Largo from Symphony no.9 in E Minor 'From the New World') , Anton Dvorak (Largo from Symphony no.9 in E Minor 'From the New World'), Ludwig van Beethoven (Marcia Funebre from Symphony no.3 in Eb 'Eroica'), Felix Mendelssohn (Hebrides from the Fingal Cave Overture), Anton Dvorak (The Water Goblin), Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov (Capriccio Espagnol), Ian Hughes (Elite Force)
I get tingles all over everytime I see this video... It makes it hurt so much more now that Studio Liverpool was just confirmed to have been closed by Sony. TT__TT
I played the first one like crazy... and still remember getting home after buying this, putting it on, and almost shitting my pants with the intro (great music)... the good ol' days...
Pluto was in dispute since 1992, but not stripped of planetary status until 2006. The game was made 8 years before it was official that Pluto was not a planet. Until 2006, it was.
I stuck with the normal lasers, and kept moving, sometimes ending up above and even behind it, maybe going over the top forwards, then away from it behind backwards. I find constant motion and not just going backwards and forwards but all over seems to work best for me. You had health bars next to the ships in CW2. Red Sun was a walk in the park. CW2 was easily the best in my book. Best levels, and you can take a weaker ship in after you win, with the generous level select you get.
I had a really hard time with the cannons. In CW2, I've never beaten the resuce the science vessel with the unstable isotopes, an only beaten the bash the asteroids into the station mission once JUST with a maxed out voodoo. In fact all my toughest missions in that game involve the grapple gun. Put an enemy in front of me I can blast, and they die.
Also, i think the hardest mission is where u have to go to a navy funeral, pretending u were one of them and steal a dead body. Suprise attack. The thing is when u show urself, like 10 navy capital ships around u go rambo and fire every thing they got. And the league capital ship (captured navy vessel) that was trying to escape would usually..blow up on u.
@saltandfinagar I know. But I'm for the Navy, as I also played the second one first (in fact, I never played the first one, just the 2nd and 3rd ones). And of course, they still are from Earth etc. which makes it more natural to side with them. :P
Also, I played this as a kid... I didn't understand at the time that what the main character spouts is propaganda... just took it as the truth at face-value :P
The level I replay the most is the mission on the purple planet, that dogfight between 5 aliens and you and 3 spooks. And if you release the offence pod it's 5 on 5. The easy thing to do is just blow them away with the particle gun, but the hard thing is to go in there and dogfight. I usually lose because they all turn on you after you've blasted them a bit. They don't if you destroy them from afar with the gun.
A great revival would be to have another sequel for the PS3/360 based upon another one of the endings from the first game or even from this game. So many possibilities
That one's not so bad. It's using the unwieldy cannon that's the problem. That one where you put mines at jump points is fun, though. The first time I didn't know what to do, so the swarm eventually came through, but I just took em all out anyway. Probably saved the navy some money too. But when I did figure it out, it's fun to watch the mines chasing them all over.
I would like to amend that Pluto's status has been in dispute since 1992 (as shown earlier) and that the video game developers in their omniscience should have known that Pluto's rejection of planetary status was imminent, and since this game was released in 1998 there really is no excuse.
>> This game was made and released previous to Pluto's disestablishment as a planet. At the time, common knowledge was that Pluto was a planet. Accepted, scholastic knowledge was that Pluto was a planet. Only works made after the disestablishment can be held accountable for inaccuracies pertaining to it, which does not include this one :p. The defense, therefore, contends the defendant is innocent of violation of statutes postdating his action. You can't violate a rule or law not yet enacted :p.
From Wikipedia (a true scholarly source) "Pluto's official status as a planet has been a subject of controversy since at least 1992, when the first Kuiper Belt Object, (15760) 1992 QB1, was discovered. Since then, further discoveries have intensified the debate." Anyway, I will concede the point that Pluto could theoretically be readmitted as a planet, although it is unlikely. I do demand that Mertens receive leniency since he is a war hero.
The one with the cannons, all u do is look for blue dots in ur 3d map, the moment u see on, u fly towards it and blow them up. They come and try have a go at the station one by one and near the end, 2 at the same time. The 2nd one..mmm... i dont remember that one.
I've beaten that one, but I know there are levels I've never beaten. A really really hard one that I've only beaten once in many many attempts is one where you have a space station surrounded by strike cannons. Another I remember is a big league ship tethered by a frigate, and if you take that out there's another frigate, and I know there's plenty more after that. I don't think I've beaten that one.
They weren't because the Empire was too freaking powerful and ferocious in its defense of the Sol system. A pity, because the League had a really upbeat theme. It's so pitiful it make me want to shed a tear - but then we wouldn't have a returning kickass Colonial Navy.
Y do people say game gameplay stunk?! its AWSOME, minddazzeling, dizzy dogfighting in SPACE, its the craziest space game i played nearly 10 yrs ago and is still the raziest space fighting game to date.
I don't get why people say the gameplay is hard. I beat the whole thing in 2 days. Now, Star Trek: Invasion. That was a hell of a challenge. But I beat that too. There were some sadistically hard levels in that. It probably helps that this is my favorite type of game, though.
The prosecution will now make its closing argument... Mertens clearly stated in his own words that there were NINE planets, yet it is common knowledge that there are only EIGHT and since he does live in the future he should really know better. His inaccuracies have poisoned the minds of video gamers and retro gamers for 2 years now, a truly unforgivable crime. Anyone concerned with justice will find him guilty.
It took me a lot longer to beat CW1 than 2 days. Took many attempts to bring down the super titan. There's one level, where your opponents are I think a destroyer and a cruiser. You have an S-11 demon as an ally. If you just stay out of the way, and wait a long while, your ally will take out both capital ships. I've beaten both games, but not all levels. And i think the league was more like 1/5 of the navy.
yea, i agree. CW2 was quite easy, even tho there ARE some hard levels. But u have to admit CW1 was freaking hard. The leauge was like 1/2 the strenght of the navy, all ur ships were hell weak, and the navy battleships blew up ships u were tryin to defend with ease. Hence failing missions was quite...common.
If only people would create a colony wars MOD for freespace or starshatter on the PC... this would be great to preserve and even continue it's legacy! any modellers here?
in the Hentai anime, Soukou Kijo Iris...the same intro music played in the beginning...although it appeared to be a bit longer and uncut. If you want me to get a clip of it, I could
lol,yea..1/5. My nethd to defeat super titan was to just use the scatter gun quickly, use after burners to dodge the lasers then fire scattergun. I just repeated that trying my best not to lose health. The good thing bout CW1 is that on the top right its accually showed a health bar of the ship u were attaking.
@SylarAlpha This hole game serise is like a perfect Story Rendition of the Atlantean Civil Wars and eventual Start of the Dark Age of Mankind AKA Red Sun Maldek, the Annunaki, Nephelim, AKA Draconian Reptilian Empire who has ruled us ever since Atlantis and Humans across the Galaxy decayed into Civil War while the Draconians conquered us and forced us to unite and disperse accross the galaxy while the Vegan humans did not take part in the human civil wars and helped the reps
>> the evidence postdates the crime. At the time of "commitment" there was no violation of statute. The defense contends that one cannot be charged with scientific libel where the information was correct and official at the time, even as stated by wikipedia.
Damn it, does ANYONE know what the song is in this video? I know the rest of the endings come from Antonin D'Vorak's Symphony No. 9 from 'A New World.' I've been trying for a long time to find it and it is driving me NUTS!!
Ahh yes, but Mertens comes from an impoverished background and thus he might have indeed failed astronomy, and since he is a fictional character unable to break through the fourth wall our scientific accuracy is meaningless to him. The prosecution continues...
Also meaningless to him because at the time this story was written and still by the time the game was released and commercial, Pluto was classified a planet by all known scientific communities and agencies.. and wasn't even on the cutting board for challenge of that status yet....
I think a mod for Homeworld 2 and/or Independence War 2: Edge of Chaos would be better :D I would love to join a crew where a mod on this game would be centered :o
Thumbs up if y'all accept that in the future, the Earth'll have to rely on other worlds to survive... because we'll consume all of our own resources: Thus repression is necessary :P
Bad Ending E - 1st Movement from Dvorak's "From the New World"...Some idiot put "Largo" - (2nd Movement) down twice. Im going to scour classiccats until i find the intro music. Ill let you know when i do. Though it could be Elite Force by Hughes...Doubt it.
This game was from a time when Psygnosis was producing these high quality science fiction based games. Sadly the team that made this games splintered from Psygnosis to form Warthog, who made the woefuly underrated Star Trek Invasion (PSX) and Battlestar Galactica (PS2-Xbox).
:) They could decide that all 3000 of the Kuiper belt objects are planets.. or that none of the planets are planets. The definition process is too arbitrary to hold it against anyone what calls a object, that was considered a planet at the time of authoring, a planet :p.
lol, yea grapple gun ones are annoying, especially the one where u have to put cannon parts thru a gateway, get to closer and its grav pull will wreck ur ship. Dam grapple missions.
i sad..but the series is over. In this game both the league and Navy team up to fight a greater enemy, and in the 3rd one, it is just about killing aliens. And thats..it..

Lewis Fawley Me too
It didn't hurt where it's one of those rare games where the goal is go out and kill your old character from the previous game..
For kron... an the colonial navy

For the colonial Navy
If a game intro's job is to psyche the player up for playing the game, this is the best intro ever. this was my favourite ps1 game
This game series deserves a second chance at life!
RIP Psygnosis, thanks for the memories!

I love this intro; since when you get deeper into the story you realise how much the character Mertens was indoctrinated, and also the Colonial Navy ships look so much better than the League
Colonial Navy!!! Down with the League.
The music really manages to make me feel this guy's story.
One of the best intros and space sims. Especially for its time.
This was Sol...and we were its prisoners...
Such a powerful and ironic line...
You could say the same about Earth.
i wonder if...
if this game is ever remade...
itll say "8 planets, 1 sun..."

Its about time someone posted videos from this awesome game. The endings were some of the best out there. I cant wait to see more. Good job.
I still play this game from time to time. That and Red Sun, although they're not really comparable. :\

i discovered the hebrides back then thanks to this game, what a gem. They all are, but the hebrides its just one of my favourite pieces of music.
When this game was published, Pluto was still considered one. You fail!!! :p
I get tingles all over everytime I see this video... It makes it hurt so much more now that Studio Liverpool was just confirmed to have been closed by Sony. TT__TT

this is the 1st playstation game that i played. it was WAY ahead of its timeL storyline, graphics, music. they need to remake it.

there was a sequel , but it wasn't as good as this main story arch , CW: Red Sun

Found Elite force of the CD - JW 2100: The Big Picture. its track 9. Coundnt download. Does anyone have this CD?
do you know the name to the intro music? i've been looking for that song
Mertens must have failed astronomy, there are only 8 planets.
a) It is considered a dead genre and was never that popular - people want first person shooters and guitar games.
b) The company no-longer exists.
For kron... (i know he was an ex league of free worlds commander an corrupt in the end lol) an colonial navy 😁
is this kron crashing down on earth in the beginning?
NVm, I found it. At long last :D.

cheers, but whats the intro song, not the ending ones
I forgot, what happened with the alien life forms in this game?
Ost name Elite force - Ian hughes

just tell me what its called or where to get it.
keep trying to post a link here but isnt working :p. do a search on the title I provided and you'll find some german company who has the cd
