  • On the way back from town, we hear the air pump get louder then just stop. A few moments later we get the warning on the dash "Check Air Suspension". After getting home, we only have one DTC "Rear Pneumatic Failure". We can remotely trigger the solenoids, but the pump doesn't come on. We remove the air pump and find the connecting rod seperated from the motor shaft. So we replace the compressor and find out what is else is wrong.

I have watched a few of your videos about your nav, they made it very easy for me to fix my own 1999 nav my father gave me. Thank you so much for taking the time to make these videos, I owe you a coffee.

After 19 years (only 99k miles), the compressor on my 2004 is starting to get loud. Am changing it tomorrow and then a Tampa to Dallas and back to Tampa trip. Will probably do the caps before our cold Florida winter sets in later this year!

I was surprised how much quieter the new compressor was and how quick it would build pressure and turn off. Thanks for the comment and watching! Good luck.

I notice on my 2004 the front bags tend to slowly leak down once the temperature gets below 40°. At 35° its still drivable, but the compressor comes on more often to keep it at ride height. At 30° the fronts leak faster than the compressor can air it up.
I've done new shocks, new bags, new solenoids and new orings on the top of the bags. Used soapy water and can not find any leaks at all even though it leaks down slowly. I figure its got to be leaking around the metal top hat that has 2 large orings since I can't see all around that area.
Have you had any problems around freezing temperatures?

I'm sorry to hear about your issue. Since I replaced the solenoid, I'm not losing any air. We just had a winter storm come through with 5deg temps and about 3 ft of snow and it's been sitting for 4 days and hasn't lost any air. I'm actually surprised. Did you use Motorcraft solenoids? Seeing the difference between the Ford parts I found, that may be your issue.

I have a 2005 i'm having the same issue, my compressor comes on and it's a bit louder than I think it should be not any clanking or clacking just a loud purring/humming sound I noticed once it's cold out the ride will be bouncy then the chime and warning does what yours is doing i'll pull over and keep the truck running and turn the suspension off then back on and ride off and it stop bouncing and behave normally I don't like doing this because there has to be a reason why it's doing this. any suggestions?

Sorry to hear you're having similar problems. Most compressor failures on air suspensions are caused by a leak in the system somewhere that causes the air compressor to over work, leading to failure. The first test I would do is put it in low range which will raise the vehicle as high as possible and park it on as flat a surface as possible, then before you turn off your vehicle, turn the air suspension switch off in the cargo area. This will prevent the system from auto leveling. Then park it on as flat as surface as possible, measure from the center of each wheel to the top of the wheel well on the fenders. While you're measuring, keep an ear out for any sounds of air leaking. Record these numbers and then let the vehicle sit preferably over night. If the leak is bad enough, you'll have one corner lower than the other 3, which will tell you to focus on that corner. If the it's not noticeable, then measure again and see which one is lower. Possibly a leaking solenoid or the air strut itself. Hopefully this helps locate your leak, but if it goes too long, you'll lose your air compressor as well. Let me know if you have any questions. Good luck and thanks for watching!

This happens with mine when it's colder. Around 40 degrees and lower. The compressor doesn't come on and sounds like it's struggling . I have to open and close the door at the red lights and turn on and off to trick it to come on. Eventually once the engine is warmed up it'll work just fine. Could that be a sign that it's just the compressor? Sounds loose and not as tight and a low hum as it used to be. I'm gonna try the above tips you mentioned also. Thanks so much. What do you hear when the solenoid is engaging ?

I only hear air releasing when the solenoid is actuated to level it out. Otherwise when it needs to raise, I hear the compressor relay then the compressor kicks on.
