- Mitch sits down with multi-instrumentalist Mike Keneally, who has worked with artists including Frank Zappa, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, and many others, in addition to numerous solo projects like Dethklok. Mike talks about how he got started, how Dethklok syncs to animation during their live gigs, what it was like to work with iconic musicians, and much more.
The Sweetwater Minute, Vol. 302
What a unique person.. the wit, the IQ, the genuine humility, the obvious talent.
Buy his music.
Support this Artist.
He's the real deal.
I did not realise he had done so much. I am listening to 'The Universe Will Provide" as I write and am taken aback by what I'm hearing!
Couldn't agree more.
Right on !
Found Mike with Frank late -88. was going to writre something special.... I'm so happy for this guy, think I love him, he's so good.
Well said.
Mike Keneally is one of a kind. Genius. I love this music, and he’s a good guy.
this guy is a true under-rated player, always a monster, always top notch
Yeah, and Frank Zappa, Satriani and Vai like to invite "under-rated" musicians... and who are these 32 idiots that agreed with this comment?!?!
Great interview! I saw Keneally on a Steve Vai video wearing a baggy hat, playing a harmonized, note for note guitar solo with Via and wondered who is this Guy? Mike Keneally! This guy is a well rounded , mind blowing musician. After hearing this interview, i would add well spoken to the list as well.
Mike is amazing and so unassuming but I was also impressed with Mitch's interview. Intelligent and thoughtful questions and he really LISTENS.
One of my favorites. A true carrier of the Zappa lineage of musical ideas. So much more than an "underrated player", real genious.
A wonderful interview!
Thanks for sharing.
Love Mike! Thanks to NDV for bringing him to my attention!
Great interview. Thank you
Good questions , well done I really enjoyed it.
Fascinated people are fascinating. At least in Mike Keneally's case that is so. Even when I didn't know what he was talking about, it was absolutely engaging.
Amazing, once you hear him, there's no turning back, first time I saw G3 without a doubt humbled by MK.oh yeah,Satch,Vai,and Johnson were cool thanks, for introducing me to MK!
Such an accomplished musician and great artist, and an all-round nice guy to boot.
Absolute competence perfectly blended with quiet unassuming ultravirtuosity, that's how I read Mike Keneally.
Love Keneally! I have all his CDs. First saw him when Beer for Dolphins was out east and came to the Iron Horse (Northampton, MA) in May 2001. Also, Mitch is a great interviewer -- I love it when interviewers do their homework on who they are interviewing. Also, love Sweetwater. I go straight there when buying anything music related -- service is the best by far.
the trick to how biz is sincerity. one you can fake that, your there. George Burns
seen Mike with Umphrey's Mcgee a couple times, good stuff.
Keneally was a beast on Answers and Attitude Song live with Vai, the top hat was always hilarious but fitting.
Great player mike
Saw you a couple of times with steve vai and have hat which is great
CV to die for 54
Wow great interview. That made him so much cooler than he already was. So humble and eloquent. His vai piano reductions astounded me. What an ear!!!! And being Zappas personal jukebox for the big band rehearsal is incredible
I found out about Mike through writing music with Andy Partridge -- which is a super cool project -- WOW he's great!!!! His ScamBot 2 is great!!! and what he does with Zappa is great -- his acoustic recording is superb and HIS production is JUST impeccable
I'd just want to ask him how he remembered the lyrics to some of those zappa songs while playing lead guitar and acting the part!
Mike is awesome. Loved his energy on stage in 1988. He always looked to be enjoying himself.
I have a long list of musical heroes. Mike's near the top. The guy is a creative force to be reckoned with.
Would have loved to see Nick D'Virgilio interview Mike!!
If you haven’t seen mike in the Zappa band you are missing out! I saw the Halloween shows at the BAKED POTATO in LA and I got excited when I met him and he couldn’t stop laughing at me………
Mike Keneally has an uncanny connection straight to my heart. I was so fortunate to be at the performance of "The Universe Will Provide" some 3 years after its premiere. What an amazing afternoon that was. Thanks for this interview, Sweetwater! I learned something new. :-)
Ps ....you're playing in zappas universe is astounding...especially jazz discharge party hats ....never thought it could be done live 54
My introduction to this beast!
@@heisthee You heard Zappa's Universe before you heard the 1988 stuff?
Wow.....Multi-instrumentalist.... and very creative...
Beefheart, Residents, Henry Cow in the same breath. I love you!!
This is a perfect example of how, in order to be a 'star' performer you have to put out some kind of artificial persona, like Zappa, like Prince, like Bowie, like Jackson, and how much more difficult it must be to make a living when as a musician you don't take that path. A lovely interview.
Ha! I had Mike Keneally as a friend on MySpace too! I was too shy to say hi :)
But he's such a nice, nice guy.
Also, I WOULD buy a ticket for Satriani show just to see Keneally perform, sure thing!
I did, when Satch and Keneally went toe to toe I give the nod to Keneally ! He killed it...
ABSOLUTELY go see Mike live and say 'hi' afterwards. Totally, preposterously, genuinely nice guy, and I'm glad to call him a friend.
Back in 90s i wrote a fan letter. I told him i love his guitar playing and clothing style. He wrote back and sent me a tie
what a genuine savant.
What A Unique Talent!
Beefheart. The Residents. Henry Cow. Tarkus. He namechecks a good chunk of my record collection. Mebbe I missed it, but no mention of Beer for Dolphins until the very end...would liked to have heard him talk more about that part of his career. At 32:30-34:30 he speaks honestly about taking gigs that keep the lights on. Steve Morse was piloting commercial puddle-jumpers for a time before he got the call from Deep Purple.
They're both such likeable guys! Mike reminds me of a more self-assured David Foster Wallace at points.
I started clapping out loud alone in my room at 35:00
I wish to hear a song with Satriani, Keneally, Vai, Kudajbergen together
The incredible.
mike is the bestest
Mike rules!!
KENEALLY RULES!!
Genius
Excelente músico
Mike is someone really special, both as a nice and cool guy, as well as an outstanding musician.
You look at Mike and he looks like a kind hardware workshop guy. He is such a beast of musician. Saw him as part of the G3 2016 tour. It's a unique experience.
i'd like get kicked in head by a horse, and wake a musical genius it's my only hope ! !
Yayyyyyy Australia next year!!!! Awesome!
It’s really a pity there ´s no french subtitles
So this is what David Gilmour does with his free time....pretty sneaky Dave
Ha, ha! So you noticed the resemblance too!
he's been talking for 8 minutes and counting.. firing nuerons;
27 minutes, non stop and counting..
the way i’m related to him
This guy is a witch doctor of music
Brilliant musician and player. I almost shit when I saw him playing keys for Satch. He's probably a better guitarist than Joe is. Sorry Joe!! Keneally is a beast.
And now with prog rock
Just keep kikkin
