Wasn’t there a case where developers built a school and/or neighborhood on an old dump which had contaminated ground and caused all sorts of problems? People building on the edge of a cliff that isn’t particularly solid when they knew of the risks doesn’t seem that far of a stretch

That was close, but I hope this is a warning good enough to let others know not to buy a home very close to large bodies of water. I'm thankful I don't live in California. I still want to re-visit that state this year however.
I will never understand what possesses a person to build/buy a GIANT house on the very edge of muddy hill. Especially in places like California where lots of rain(large volume, not frequency)is not totally out of the ordinary.
No one is mentioning that one building in the middle of a cliff, which has fortified ground foundation. Hmm ... could it be the only sober architect? Good job 👏 👍 👌
So you build your house on the edge of a dirt cliff and then you're upset when your backyard falls over the cliff What engineer and architect thought this was okay. Why would a person think this is okay just because it costs a lot of money doesn't mean it's safe 🤯
California coastline is largely sandstone, or some version of compacted sand. It's not structurally capable of holding anything without some advanced engineering. We had a young guy that built "under the table" ponds and pools on the north shore in BC. It's often ROCK and very stable, but with rains his pool went down the hill, into another house, and killed a couple of people. He ALSO worked for the city full time, but looked like a dumpster diver. I think his "cash flow" went elsewhere as well. But no permits, no eng., no nothing. Not sure what happened to the case, but someone better have cast iron pants.
We should not be giving any federal assistance for something like this. if some rich person is dumb enough to build a house on the side of a mountain nextocean that's clearly gonna fall in one day that's their financial responsibility 100%
Don't buy a house on a cliff 🤷♂️ reminds me of the rich people here in FL asking for state aid because thier Beach front home got washed away in a storm
Why do people build their homes on a cliff? Why do people build their homes on stilts? Poor judgment. "O it won't happen to my house". I've lived here for 20 yrs and nothing ever happened. You know what I say? Never say never again.
They say that: “putting a pool in your house is like digging, a 🕳️ hole and throwing money into it!” now, putting a pool at the end of a cliff, that’s just plain stupidity……. 🤓🤷♂️🎻
Ironically, though, the only part of the cliffside that slid was the part by the pool, making the pool the primary reason the ground was weakened there in the first place.
@@Jayro951 for sure, when there were large trees / bushes on the slope before people built their stuff there, it was naturally protected against the landslides. Cutting down the deep-rooted vegetation to build their stuff and allow for the view of the sea, that's what caused the soil to be unstable
I kind of wonder if the pool actually helped to prevent more of the back yard from falling. It seems like some of the cement might be helping to reinforce the ground? Has anyone had an inground pool fall in a landslide, especially if it was caught on video?
Let's build houses on cliffs above the ocean,, literally on the edge, what could POSSIBLY go wrong..... Every year when the rains get real heavy February through April this happens somewhere in California. You'd think they'd learn to NOT build where they do. But hey what do you expect from the most greed filled "industry" there is in this country. It's been a get rich quick scheme for decades now. For the developers, the real estate agents and for homeowners, and of course the lenders etc...... Zero sympathy.
honestly if I was the owner I would turn smt horrible into something great when its safe make the land slide into something that makes the backyard more beautiful then it was before. I know some people got pools where there is glass at the edge of the cliff side which would be beautiful imo but its up to them

I'd love to hear from the architects and engineers who designed these homes and from those who granted planning permission
For sure
The people who bought it...
Happens all the time .& the developers took the money & ran a long time ago .!
It doesn't matter. The taxpayers will rebuild the homes

Federal assistance for the ocean view cliff side mansions. Those poor people. Life must be so tough
The rich get bailouts the poor get to "like it or leave it"
Well they allowed them to build there lol If they went against building codes that would be different
Exactly.
I repeat, Imagine me caring about rich people who build homes in stupid places.

Why federal assistance if they're rich?
This reminded me of that GTA V mission where you have to pull the house off of the cliff
Why would you build a pool and houses on a hill with a cliff?
Because it probably has a sweetass unobstructed view and is insured.

I bet the cliff was farther away many years ago. No one had any idea this mudslide would happen.
