If you will soak them for 45 minutes in water, you can use a wire wheel or wire brush to clean the skin off and make a beautiful skin on the gourd. No more sanding!
So excited to have found your channel! We are also in the gulf coast region. North of Houston. We accidentally grew some apple gourds this year. We purchased two at heb last year and when we were finished decorating with them, we threw them in our compost. They volunteered this year and we've harvested a basket full! Apparently they are well suited for birdhouses. We've never tried any sort of birdhouse gourd, so we were delighted to find this video. Thank you for the fun idea! Ps... we're subscribed to follow now ❤ Always eager to learn more about homesteading in our area!
Oh, I saw those at HEB and was so tempted to grow them. I didn't. Instead I am trying African Drum Gourd. It's massive, and the vine is so aggressive. I don't know what I was thinking, but I will say it's nice to have something growing in the garden that doesn't need water!
Once pollinated the female flowers start to swell within just a couple days. The male flowers will come out first, followed by the females. You can tell a female from a male because the female flowers have a bulbous shape (looks similar to a tiny gourd) just below the flower where the males do not.

@@TurnYourHeadandScoff oh yes, anything that can survive this drought will be high on my planting list next year!!
It's very delicious to eat when still small and soft
How long after the flowers blooming do the gourds start to appear?

Bottom drainage holes
great idea!
Gourds are not totaly pest proof Mine got infested with tiny black ants last year and dried up and died
Oh no! I'm sorry to hear that. My luffa gourd gets ants, but the others don't.
Stop painting flowers on birdhouses. It attracts attention and problems.
