The marvel books are as good as they've ever been... Theyve been predicting marvels demise for years... Everybody was supposed to be tired of superhero movies... But the greatest one just came out, with spider verse.
I've said this before. Marvel had the greatest advertising tool for the past decade: the movies. How Iron Man, arguably the most popular fictional character of the past decade, couldn't even sell beyond 10K copies, is insane.
I stopped reading marvel years ago. Lack of enjoyment, over saturation of events, poor writing and rising prices, made cutting marvel sadly an easy decision. So I commiserate with you on the loss of marvel.
Been reading Marvel for over 40 years. At this point I just wish it would die so I don't have to keep hearing about something I do deeply loved, continue to be ruined.
As some one who focused mainly on back issues since 2015, Im "selfishly" not to happy with more and more people diving into back issues; cause it has dramaticly driven up prices & "competition".
Stan Lee actually wasn't involved in the death of Gwen Stacy. He was on vacation when Gerry Conway wrote that story and Stan was understandably furious when he returned from his vacation when he found out what Conway did. But, yeah, I completely understand why that comic shop owner decided to not get new Marvel in. And there's no surprise that people are buying back issues up to 50 years old, considering the stuff now is just terrible for the most part. I'd rather buy Spider-Man and X-Men from 20-60 years ago and not what's being made now
Back issues are definitely more in demand than modern comics. But even those have taken a hit since 2020/2021. Since now you have people that overpaid for them and can't accept that fact. I've gotten books for hundreds of dollars less than what they were selling for just 15 months ago! I think you need the new books for the initial foot traffic in the doors. If there's a shop that only has back issues, I'd probably only stop in once a month or less. Just my opinion. For reference the back issue only shop in my city lasted only five months before closing.
This is proof why there are so many independent comic book companies like Boom and AWA and Scout comics rising in popularity. Excellent artwork and actually stories!
I feel bad for my lcs because all I buy from him is occasional Star Trek and Dune comics, neither of which I really enjoy but trying to find anything half decent to get.
I know I'm beating a nearly dead horse at this point. But most of what this comics shop owner says is basically what I, as a customer, am doing when it comes to western comics now. Although in my case it's mainly digital comics. Thing is, I'm hearing that the ESG & DEI crap are starting to make their way to the land of the rising sun, so manga's dominance of the our market (the west/U.S. of A), may be coming to an end.
It's not true no one cared about ASM 26, it cost Marvel another comic book reader. He decided that getting back issues of Daredevil was a better option than keeping up with the non-story happening in ASM.
It is mad the proof is in front of the faces of these companies. The amount of support there has been on the net the last couple of days for the return of Transformers / G.I. Joe series from a quality company like Skybound. I was at a convention the weekend and i told a Transformer fan that the comic was coming back. He told me how unreadable the last series was with its forced politics. Marvel & DC could be doing very well now but have put activists in top positions who are destroying their companies. Trouble is there is now new blood coming into western comics & in a generations time it will have an impact.
Not that it's worth much, but I do think Marvel fixed the foil variant issue. I was in my LCS this morning, and the owner said they lowered the price, so his are actually being sold for cover price. I would assume that's the case everywhere.
For a minute there I thought you said Christopher can't write well. Image having that for a last name. How ironic (and almost appropriate) last name that would be.
it was pretty upsetting to see the invoice for the foil Ult.Invasion it was like 14% off cover. maybe less. comic stores adapt and i'm offering a chance to win the incentive variant for an increased foil price. and PRH showing that these have normal discount rates is really messed up.
My comic guy at the swap meet has been telling me his supplier of cheap back issues got cleaned out completely by a couple of guys that bought their whole supply. Even he's having issues replenishing his boxes. He also can't keep any Spider-Man books in stock at all, and he sells those for the cover price or higher.
I read two issues of avengers beyond before I checked out. Comics ain't the same anymore. The closest thing to peak my interests now is Eric July's Rippaverse.
Youre right as usual, Wes. But in all your recent videos that I've watched including this one you don't comment on the North/Coello Fantastic Four. Maybe I just missed it? But I'm pretty sure that it was in one of your vids last year that I even found out about it...! I hate the current continuity as well and I had almost completely checked out of comics back in the 2000's coming back only sporadically. But as lifelong FF fan I have to admit to liking his direction and how respectfully he's handling the characters and their ethos and history. Honestly, it's a great book so far and the only current Marvel book I'm even thinking about reading. So I would respectfully LOVE to hear your thoughts on it one of these days (either before or after you trash Hickman's newly planned continuity reboots bc I have little hope for Ultimates and even less hope for G.O.D.S.) DC has recently had a few series that have been pretty good and a couple of brand new ones that I am interested in. After saying that though the last few years have been a disaster for them, as bad as Marvel I don't know because I'm almost exclusively a DC guy but I can tell you I have been reading back issue storylines for the majority, some I am re-reading and others I am reading for the first time. Right now I am reading Geoff Johns Booster Gold run from 2007 which ties into 52 countdown and final crisis I believe. Before that I read the new 52 All-Star western series which was phenomenal that I stupidly passed on back in the day. Even the so-so series back then look and read great compared to the majority of crap that they have put out the last few years.

There was a bit of hope this week in Marvel comics. Surprisingly, I enjoyed a few titles. Jed Mackay's Avengers #2 was pretty good, as was Phillip Kennedy Johnson's first issue of the Hulk. The best Marvel title of all this week though was definitely Ultimate Invasion #1. I had missed Hickmans writing, and he's back on form.
Back issues seem like such a risky propositions, there is always the chance that stock is gonna dry up. And if marvel/dc ever put their back catalog similar to many Manga apps with a subscription service, that could be detrimental.
Its not sad or angering to see Marvel or DC do this anymore. Its jsut expected that they'll mess everything up. It would be a good video defailing a timeline of when their decent into this garbage age happened. The comic collecting industry has grown very used to this and should have absolutely no problem paying more for these foil variant covers. This topic has become quite stupid because its been going on for years.

What's the difference if marvel doubles the cover price, or cuts the dealer discount? The result is the same.
Every time the price goes up, everybody bitches and says they won't buy it, then they do anyway.
