I'm not a Mercedes fan, but doing this to THAT model, and a one in apparently fairly well condition... it was painfull to watch : /
They coluld've at least bought one that had already been trashed...
It wasn't just an fairly well condition it was perfect condition
Same, ruining classics, especially in great condition, is one of my pet peeves. Hell, ruining ANYYHING in great condition that can be used triggers me.

Me too. İm so sad :(
It’s so cool how the windows opened automatically for passengers to escape when it sensed enough water. Impressive for an 80s car!
Yeah. They don’t make them like that anymore.
I think it was just shorting out as not all the windows lowered. Also it closed the sunroof which is the exact opposite of what you would want.
just give it to a teenager... the ultimate durability test
+Aarons Automotive That car would be the ultimate teenager car, as the cars drives secure and reliable and has best results in accident statistics.
not every teenager is a bad driver
Thunfischkilla But the in statistics they are leading the crash top ten...

i did never deny that
Thunfischkilla I had that car as teenager and was lucky with it and love it. A 300TE with leather and nearly all extras, but the buddy was a bit thursty, but i guess it was mostly my driving style.
Found it funny when Top gear tortured a Toyota, but heartbreaking when fifth gear chose a merc to be the victim
Eh, i think its karma, Toyota made good JDM cars back in the day, for an example, The AE86

Since you guys seem not to be in the community, you would think anime fans would be insulted by being called a "Weeb". But you do not seem to know that it was actually the community jokingly mocking ourselves and not to insult ourselves, but since any of you aren't part of it, you think we would be insulted by being called a "Weeb" but in reality, we don't really care, so what's the point of you seriously trying to insult me, just so you could get a reaction from me, and people should not call out others for being a "Weeb" when they do not even know the meaning of it, and liking Japanese JDM cars is not being a "Weeb".

I think the windos automatically opened as a saftey feature so you can get out in case you crash into a lake.
It's actually the comfort functions control unit, which is controlling power windows, sunroof etc and is located under the back seat that has got water in it and then it will live its own life.
Right... even the top one which opened. Oh wait!
Yes, the same unit also controls the sunroof.
I thought that too, but the front windows would've opened, not the back.
It was a coincidence, the electronics were failing and the sun roof CLOSED
That said, that would actually be a good idea for cars to automatically lower all windows if they do detect flooding.
"And subjecting it to the kinds of sustainability tests that modern day cars go through"

isnt this a direct copy of top gear trying to kill the toyota hilux pickup ?
Yes it is, but this is worse...
yup, cant wait till the new show comes out on amazon though.

Excuse me! 170K miles for that car is just a warm up. 5 or 6 times more could be a factor but 170K is NOTHING for that car! Respect!
well if you had gone in slower, instead of 500000 miles an hour, you wouldnt have hydrolocked the engine and the merc could have waded through.
It wasn's so deep, that's the wave that flooded the air filter. Idiot protection was disengaded...

Now that TopGear is gone, we have to put up with the less than interesting fifth gear!

Yes, she is the most interesting character in the less than interesting fifth gear. I would marry her even though she is over e decade older than me. :-) :X :X :D
yeah, hottest presenter on TV by miles! :-) x

Couldn't they just drown Vicky instead and pull the plug on fifth gear and put Top Gear in its place
+Mark C Vicky is such a cry baby. Oh! there is a bit of water in the car, I have to run away. What was she afraid of ? Drowning ? Its just idiotic, it is not like she drove into a deep river, she drove into a puddle. Once I drove my car in a road filled with water, deeper than that, by mistake, during a flood. I got out of the window, opened the hood, dried up everything, started the car again, and carried on, very slowly. And it was not even a merc, it was a fiat 124 special. Bring back Top Gear

I once did pretty much this exact thing to a 1970 300SEL 6.3. After removing the plugs, and draining the engine, the car ran better than before the hydrolocking.
Mercs are solid machines and this one obviously had a good deal of life left in it. Pitty it fell into their hands.
I couldn't believe the sunroof was going to close whilst Vicky was trying to get out

Gas engines need electicity to run, beter would try the diesel!
While desiel engines only require electricity to start the intake of air would still be a problem. A problem that would far exceed any electrical problems

I love how hitting the Merc with a baseball bat was part of the durability test. Even the worst piece of shit car/truck could survive that. It's equally hilarious that the host was wearing ear protection and safety glasses. She should have worn a helmet to protect her under developed brain.
xD The Merc totally trolled her with the sunroof.... revenge TvT

I'm not sure how they got the stunt at 2:50 past H&S
I don't see the point of this. Mercedes are good cars! I can see why why you would do this do a crap car but not a Mercedes.
Wa,this Merc is good. And I'm amazed by how deep those German Enginer thought about the safety. The windows which automaticly went down when the car is drowning. What a great idea.
(Fun truth that hard to bellieve :the faster the car been totally drowned, the faster passengers can escape.(Because the faster the pressure inside and outside the car are balanced, the sooner people onbroad can open the door and escape))
How deep was the water? Also did you give Paul the mechanic spare parts?
Wow! That's amazing when you drive a car into water it stops working!!

This beautiful merc costs around 8000 pounds for the less option e200 models in my country.
Vicki is that your s2000?
Could it be that the windows opened as a security feature (so the people can try to swim out through them)?
Durability and build quality of Mercs from this age formed the 'premium' image for me. Mercedes these days are more exciting, but quality has packed its bag and left.
Had you rode the brakes and kept on the gas I bet it would have been fine. I went through similar water in a Lincoln Town Car and was just fine
I bet VBH loved the vibration of those bumpy roads
Breaks out of character when sun roof shuts by its self
That's the way good and reliable cars should be built nowadays.
My 91 lexus sc400 sat in deeper water for 6 hours, only 1cm came into drivers footwell, everywhere else inside 100% dry, engine fully submerged it water, took it out, jump leads, turned over for 30 secods it fired up and drove 100% perfect.
Good to know inhave one too. Been through alot with her...even went offroad lol
With what Mercedes were like in the 80s, it wouldn’t surprise me if the car was designed that if underwater, the windows opened to let people out in case of accident.
Fifth Gear: We're going to kill a Merc.
Merc: Challenge accepted.
*Taps on the engine* "She may be dead" 😂
Vikki in wellies....my life is complete now.
The windows and the sunroof acting up makes sense, when knowing the comfort control box is placed under the rear seat. Funny that the central locking didn't - it's placed their as well.

What a ridiculous thing to do. Of course the car will stop. This car destruction was what Top Gear did all the time, and why I stopped watching that show.

respect for all the old models by mercedes....
I imagine if you continued through the water, rather than stop in the middle, you might've made it across without problems.
I think the diesel could potentially survive this test. Maybe?
Diesel suffer worse than petrol with water
So sad. Imagine the many more miles someone could have traveled in it.
The most common cause of death for German cars here in the USA is the extremely high cost of maintenance. Aside from Volkswagen - which is an upmarket but still mainstream make - all of the European makes are marketed exclusively as luxury cars. As with all low-volume luxury cars, there are almost no quality aftermarket parts available for them. Similarly, given the German makes' mechanical complexity and relative rarity, there aren't many mechanics who posses the proprietary tools and training to service them.
What this all means is that, if you do decide to buy a German car here, you're almost completely subject to your local dealership's monopoly prices for parts and service. So, because maintaining them is so expensive, European makes (especially Mercedes) tend to depreciate extremely rapidly - it's not at all unusual to find late model, low mileage Mercs and BMW's selling for less than half of their new MSRP. The superficially low sticker price generally paid for second-hand German cars in North America simply reflects the absurdly high total cost of ownership these vehicles carry.
Why are you telling us this WHY. FUCK OFF
bottom line - if you can't afford a NEW merc/bmw/porsche, don't bother buying a used one because the repair costs are the same.
But you see, they are fantastic to drive when they ARE working, which is the main reason that rich people buy them.
Its a bummer... Mercedes is a good company, there cars are good when they run. But they lose resale real fast especially when you compare them to a used Japanese luxury car.
ToyotaCelicaDude1 Even the Japanese luxury brands typically depreciate much more rapidly than their mass-market counterparts. The reason they don't lose value quite as quickly as the Germans is because they're (for the most part) just re-badged versions of ho-hum mass-market cars like the Toyota Camry or Honda Accord, but that also makes them less desirable than the purpose-built Germans.
Also, it's worth noting that I'm personally skeptical of this supposedly legendary Japanese reliability. I've owned three Japanese brand cars, and their maintenance/repair costs were similar to GM vehicles, but quite a lot higher than any Ford I've owned. I've had to replace a transmission in an Accord, a catalytic converter and exhaust recirc valve in a Camry, and the head gasket on an Eclipse. I got 150-170k out of my last two Explorers (most costly repair being a brake line - big deal) before selling them, while my current Taurus SHO has 65k miles and hasn't required anything but scheduled maintenance.
My old 2011 kia had a sunroof with "sensors" to prevent injury by not putting so much force if you had your arm or head out of it, yea not at all, it nearly cut my arm off, it didnt want to stop
Does a modern car get banged up with a baseball bat as part of durability tests? How ridiculous.
Still got the S2000 nice...
If he's a professional mechanic how did he not think, "this car was just in water, I should take the spark plugs out and pump the engine out."
+ToyotaCelicaDude1 he is not he's an AA technician. not a proper mechanic :)
They've drowned the car in water, and it took that long to realize that water in the cylinders might have been the problem?

The windows going down was probably a safety feature so you wouldn't have to wait for pressure to equalize before opening doors
possibly, but its more plausible that the electrics were shorting. Ive seen this happen to someones car and the lights and climate control were going crazy... freaky.
175,000? Psssssh, I had a 97 Toyota Camry that I had put 380,000 on the engine. Never had to change out anything on that car aside from normal maintenance. It just wouldn't die...I sold it to a scrap yard to finally retire it....it still ran fine.
