You are right. It’s tough for college players to go straight to the WNBA. No offseason for them. That will be hardest on players like Clark who have and will continue to play heavy minutes with the Fever.
I think the college players biggest weaknesses will be amplified in the WNBA. Clark’s struggles with physicality, Brink’s propensity to foul on defense, Reese’s unpolished footwork, Cardoso’s jumper.
It will take them all a couple seasons to adjust, but I think all of them will.
I’m very curious to see if Kate Martin, Gabbie Marshall, and Nika Muhl will make final rosters.
Kitley is a great stash prospect for next year.
I would love Reese to go to Chicago. Her and Jackson could be the pieces to rebuild that decimated Sky roster.
Great analysis!!
Gabbie did not declare for the WNBA. She’s going to grad school in North Carolina.
I actually think cordoso has a nice shot folks will be surprised if she gets a chance
Cardoso won't really struggle and she doesn't need a jumper. There are times when nobody can stop Teaira McCowan and Kalani Brown due to size and strength. And Cardoso is more mobile and agile than both. Rickea Jackson and Cardoso will have the smoothest transition to the W.
@@helenoftroy1227 That's what I was given to understand. Gabbie's Gone and ain't coming Back.
Lol Reese landed in Chicago glad she gets to go back to her natural position. She had started her college development as a stretch 4 but that got derailed at LSU now she will be able to play with a true center.
The biggest part of adjustment for someone like Caitlin Clark s that she played in the championship game, now is going around collecting awards, then the draft, move to wherever she’s drafted(yeah yeah The Fever) a place to live, get new coaches and teammates. Early may pre season game and then the season starts. Maybe the olympics. Back to the W. season ends almost 1 year after she started. The physical toll will be huge.
Aw stop other players have done it Boston played in the final four and was rookie of the year
Caitlin isn’t the first to do this and won’t be the last. Unfortunately, that’s just the way it is.
A deserved shout out for the Washington Spirit. Not only is it that they have now won their last 3 games, but 'how' they've won them. ...Introducing their new Spanish style ball-control scheme's with new coach Adrian Gonzalez, soon to be assistant coach to Barcelona's 32 year old wizard of a tactician & coach, Jonatan Giraldez. Their 3rd goal was a thing of beauty, having total ball control & working it 'back' from the final 3rd all the way to Kingsbury & starting over working it forward again into the eventual score. Of course, their true test will be this Saturday vs. Gotham NY/NJ in DC at Audi Field.
There are millions of Caitlin fans & millions of Angel fans, but they're rookies. They won't be instantly dominant, since they will no longer be the vets at this new & higher level. College dominance doesn't usually translate instantly, just as high school to college doesn't usually translate instantly. As great as Hannah Hildalgo played, opening up with 31 & 34 point games against South Carolina & UConn, she had to be sat down because she needed time to sit & watch so she could "see". By mid-season, it wouldn't surprise me to see Caitlin & Boston average 15 to 20 from their 2-man game. Let these young'nz learn. Let'em make mistakes, get knocked around, and just experience the difference between college & pro. All of these vets, like all if these rookies, were all everything at their colleges. They all took their lumps, persevered, grew, developed, and are obligated to give these rookies the rookie treatment on the court. Even Iverson & Shaq had a "welcome to the NBA" moment or 3. They made mistakes, turnovers, foul trouble, dumb gambles, but they kept battling. Give'em the 3 guaranteed years to earn the team option 4th year, then they get to welcome Hannah, JuJu, FullWildin', and many many other elite freshmen. The best part is most of them faced most of them for 1yr, and it'll be interesting to see how it goes. I don't see JuJu falling off, as a healthy 6'2" guard. She came into USC with a very mature game; a lotta MJ midrange assassin in her game but just as lethal beyond the arc.
Love the breakdown and very on point. The transition will be interesting.
I don't think people realize these draftees will play 70 games in a season. Most of them play 30 college games then get drafted and a month later they bout to play a 40 game schedule. This year will be a little broken up because of the Olympics but that's a rough start to a pro career.
Here are my top-10 WNBA picks (after reflecting back on your breakdown of the players’ game) of course I have Caitlin Clark going #1, Kamilla Cardoso #2, Angel Reese # 3, Cameron Brink #4, Rickea Jackson #5, Aaliyah Edwards #6, Celeste Taylor #7, Jacy Sheldon# 8, Alissa Pili #9, and at #10 I have Charisma Osborne.
Claire - Great commentary. Please get a mic screen for your mic. It will improve your mic audio tremendously and cut down on all the "p" plosives (e.g. when you say words like player, program, participate, etc.).
A front court with Brink and Cardoso would be interesting to have
How long did it take Steph Curry to,,,,, adjust!???
And Jokic
Steph only issue early in his career was injuries. Jokic was a 5 years process before he was anywhere near his current level.
So CC has risen, adapted, and excelled at every higher level into which she graduated and made herself available. This means that CC adjustment to the WNBA would likely not be an issue, but her continued success, to be frank, would be an issue only to former players like Debbie Downer Taurasi.
Move on
@@narlywaves2371 Debbie Downer Taurasi
Clearly, you don’t even watch the W. Taurasi is a current player not a former player.
@@helenoftroy1227 Thank you. I was misinformed. “This means that CC adjustment to the WNBA would likely not be an issue, but be her continued success, to be frank, would be an issue only to current players like Debbie Downer Taurasi and some former players."
Please relax. You’re showing you don’t really know the W.
It’s one of the most competitive leagues. Every rookie has a transition period. Clark will, as has every rookie before her.
I don't think they struggle they are not given a legit chance to make a team because of players like turasi and Candace Parker holding up roster spots
U have a point that is similar 2 what 2023 draftee Alexis Morris said last yr. Older vets that are over-the-hill won't retire, even former superstars, so now all of these great young talents coming in cannibalize each other for 1-2 spots on a team. This, along w/ the painstakingly slow expansion process, has left many rookies w/ the short straw 😕
With all the attention on the league now the older vets gonna definitely hang around to cash-in. Think the WNBA could benefit from a rookie league financed by Ice Cube he got 15M to put into the salaries. Plus these rookies not on roasters could serve as ambassadors marketing the game.
