Thank you... My project starts tomorrow :) I will make one change of splitting it into two cabinets of 48 and 24 due to space constraints. Your guide and video will help as this is my first project starting from scratch.
Upon unboxing, I was immediately upset at how the rails were very noticeably bent. But I kept going, all tools needed to assemble were included ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxqtX4Dxs6aecAZEuz6GY5-d81YecKCshn and I had it set up in about 30 minutes. Honestly I love this thing, make sure to read the measurements and measure your space so you know if it'll work for you. I bought this to put inside my closet, underneath where I hang my clothes and it is absolutely perfect! It is VERY sturdy and all drawers glide easily and mine are stuffed, and they are still flush when closed.
I subscribed mostly because I like how you are all business and don't waste time with fluff. There is an incredible amount of information in your 15 minute video. Much appreciated!
LOL. Lucky You. I have been using my parents dresser drawers that were purchased in 1950. We have had a lot of rain lately, and I put some chocks under it to stop it getting wet. The mice really appreciated a dry place to sh*t. Not under it but thru ALL the drawers.
This is BADASS!!! I plan on making cabinets like this for my garage, but not mobile. I also plan on doing some type of butcherblock top for mine, so I can abuse it without worrying about destroying it. I really like the idea of doing a bunch of thinner drawers too.
O I absolutely get that! I dont plan to work on this much so i didnt make it with space to clamp or anything. If I wanted to, I could just replace the top some day. The thinner drawers though.. huge space saver
@@KevBotWorkshop I will! I have a steel rod desk project and a BBQ/pizza oven island project ahead of workshop projects, but I’ll definitely tag you. Thanks again!
Good project. FWIW as a professional- you can probably get away with 1/2” baltic ply drawer sides and 1/4” bottoms. You alluded to that at 9:00 With glue and stepped square joinery, I have a mechanic’s bottom chest on wheels the size of yours. I built it almost 25 years ago and even with a couple drawers full of ~100# + of steel jigs, hammer forms, and dollies I have never had a single failure other than a drawer pull I dropped a big maple plank on. One thing about it: yours will last at least that well! :) I prefer the narrower drawers as you mentioned; the idea of a toolbox is to access tools in an organized fashion, not stuff it full of stacked up stuff. Nice color choice btw Mine’s a tad more blue tone but yours looks familiar.
Thanks! And i fully agree about thinner ply. In my plans I made an adjustment for everyone to save some $ and make it weigh less. I still would probably not use 1/4 on the bigger drawers just my opinion cause I throw in there a router and sander and drill so the big drawers are a bit heavy, but yeah I see what you mean
I wish you had dimensions in the plans I purchased. Saw review with same stress but he was going to watch video again and write down what dimensions he can. Shouldn't be necessary. Shines a dim light and a great production.
I bought used blueprint cabinets that hold items 2 inches... usually on their side. They are full depth drawers on ball bearing rollers.. and 48x48 inches. You can get these SUPER quality files for cheap or free on Craigslist, etc. You can stand in the drawers without buckling. You can stack units on other units without loss of strength or function. For larger storage I bought steel storage cabiners with many different sizes and shapes. You can buy super quality used ones for $50 each from junkers. Buy some Harbor Freight wheels to put under them and you have cabinets that are as good as Snap On for PENNIES on the dollar. I have 25 blueprint drawers and 100 steel drawer cabinets on 100 or so wheels. I didnt spend $2000 for EVERYTHING.
Great video! I'll be making this for sure. I appreciate your usage of the Sketchup model also it made it clearer what parts were being created. Also I use Sketchup for all of my designs also. Again nice job!
Thanks for the video. Advice requested. I used to build custom furniture professionally in the 80's for a few years. When I stumbled upon your video I remembered that I still need to build a large "Map" style storage cabinet for my radio control airplane workshop. The interior of the drawers need to be about 60" wide and 36" deep but only 3" and 5" in height. They will hold larger scraps for fiberglass, kevlar and carbon fiber cloth, sheets of mylar, plastic vacuum bagging material and paper plans for radio controlled aircraft. Picking your brain, I have no have no Idea how to successfully build such large but shallow drawers and keep them from sagging over time. Thanks...
This is a great build. I am going to try to build this with all the scrap wood in my garage. I think I have enough to build 4 or 5 of these things. That would be awesome. Plans or no plans you made such a good video I will just follow along the best I can and make the rest up as I go. Great tip on the drawer slides spacing.
looks great. Looking for your plans when you release them :) After building all our stores cabinetry with 3/4" pre-finished white birch, I had to run everything one and done as there was no cover up finish work. For that bottom upper toe kick, I'd run front to back bottom shelving and that toe kick plate would sit all the way to the top of the 3.5" cut out, supporting the shelf. I like your method as it saves material and you have drawers anyways. Thought I'd give you an alternate if you ever want to leave that open and have a bottom shelf.

That dresser system you had was pretty solid, not sure why you'd even consider a change! Seriously though, great build, especially the camera work and editing.
not bad.. i should do this rather than open shelves. saw dust gets EVERYWHERE without a dust collection system in place. i don't do enough wood work to justify the expense, i do have a ton of tools and am always tinkering on something. made something similar to hold a large blow molded case full of sockets, used warped thrown away plywood (was given a lot) and pallet wood and the same slides. turned out ok once i made a jig for the skil saw. those slides i found could be mounted by the cut out tabs making up for slight variances. they kinda float between the drawer and frame.
Thi video inspired me to do this cabinet I need up with slightly taller adding up extra drawer. Love the plans very easy to fallow ! I am at the process to building drawers , fortunately I don’t have table or router and only track saw . I think the only option is to do bottoms gluing them and perhaps screws instead rabbet style. I have question regarding you mounting example of the slides where you measured the width of the drawers, did you just to the top right on as you showing in the video ? or should I do say across entire top or bottom. This will e little tricky and not much room for error haha , thanks again ! Greetings from cold Montana

In my plans announcement video I talked about how I updated the plans with mostly 1/2” ply to make it weigh less and cost less. I typically stray away from1/4” as drawer bottoms cause I’ve seen them sag over time but you do you
If anyone re-builds this i recommend installing the drawer slides while the wood pieces are still unassembled. There is a reason why IKEA does this. It´s much easier if everything is measured correctly. But given that he got them after building the cabinet his order of operations was justified.
Sure you can do that, as long as you're right with measurements. IKEA is all mass produced, cut by CNCs , takes out the human error. Ill continue to do it this way
Thanks for the video and plans (which I purchased). What size screws are you using to attach the drawer bottom to the drawer frame? In the video it shows a box of 1 1/4" but that seems too big for 1/2" ply? Thanks
Instead of those Rockler casters you should’ve just eliminated the 4” toe kick and installed 6 good quality 3” casters with brakes on the front 3. That way you don’t have the 6” on each side of the cabinet wasted for the caster and need even more space to reach with your foot to set the caster.
Love this! Question however...why spend the extra money for nicer plywood if you're just going to paint it? I love the result and look but usually you get the nicer lumber to stain or varnish.
Question- why did you use pocket hole screws for the drawers, when they have false fronts so conventional screws would not be seen? Instead the sides have those big holes showing. Is there some advantage? Cannot be strength, the 1/2" bottoms will add all that is needed.
Very well done. What was your estimated total cost? With plywood thru the roof now, would it be comparable to purchase a Harbor Freight box? Love your build and it looks great, just a curiosity question. And nothing satisfies like saying "I built that"!
