As a kid I didn't really care for Marge that much but as an adult she's one of my favorite characters in the show now. All the material with her is so subtle and I love how innocent she can be but at the same time mildly tired of all the nonsense around her.
Generally speaking, Marge moments are for the people who appreciate subtle humor. She's very underrated, and I think picking a scene like the one where she's brandishing an enormous ice-cream cone, while funny, is kind of missing what the character is supposed to be about. The best Marge moments are those that exemplify her naivete and her love/hate relationship with the mundane. When handled by capable writers, she seems very much like a satirical take on the idealized 1950s mother/wife.
It’s post-season 9, so can be dismissed. Matt Groening did comment once that Marge got ‘crazier’ around that time. I don’t think he approved. The Simpsons as a whole was conceived as ‘the 1950s American idyll gone a bit wrong’. The essence of the early seasons was taking nostalgic tropes and twisting them. One of those tropes being the typical submissive suburban housewife. I think the show’s decline is partly attributable to that early idea being forgotten, and Marge is the character who has suffered the most in that regard. What she signifies is now ludicrously out of date.
@@kisbie I don't want to dismiss it; as I said, I think it's funny. In fact, I was still enjoying most Simpsons episodes until circa the Lady Gaga appearance. Then I hung on until the Elon Musk episode, which didn't make me smile even once. That, for me, was the end. My point above was simply that if you are doing a relatively short "Best of Marge Simpson" compilation, such a moment is not really representative of the character and what makes her great.
