BBC: Marc Bolan - The Final Word (2007)

- Fellow glam rock star Suzi Quatro narrates a documentary which examines Marc Bolan's childhood ambitions of fame and where it led him, using previously lost TV and radio interviews, rediscovered Top of the Pops recordings, unseen concert footage and unique home movies.
Includes contributions from his companion Gloria Jones, brother Harry Feld, producer Tony Visconti, Queen's Roger Taylor, Steve Harley, Zandra Rhodes and more, with Visconti also deconstructing the track Ride a White Swan.
such a beautiful soul. there will never be anyone else like him.
That applies to us all.

Bolan was the epitome of a ROCK STAR ! It's amazing how natural it came to him ....
he was the Epitome of a falling star. Bowie was the epitome of the real god rocker

I'm a huge MB fan who knows when to keep it real. ✌️
Miss you Mr man! 40 years today you'll never go away... Watch a TV documentary last night on him and this this morning was driving this afternoon and a man walked towards my car wearing a "Slider" album cover t shirt! I shouted to him "40 years today" he put his thumb 👍 up and said "yes baby"! Genius synchronisity co-incidence magical thank you Mr B x
Marc Bolan as I remember as a young 12 year old, was a sensation, and all of my school class mates who were very much into music at that period, could not help but love his style and presence. He certainly was a natural super star and had so much incredible style. RIP Marc.
*T.REXTASY* 🤣🤣
He was pure beauty wasn't he ? Inside and out 😔 🤍
I met Marc Bolan ( in 1972) briefly at a party in Hollywood when I was 16 years old. I went up to him and I said "How does it feel to be a superstar?" and he burst out laughing. I asked him for his autograph and he signed it on a matchbook cover. I am so thankful for that brief encounter.
M der
Dya still have it?
Aww. Cool story!
wow, how wonderful. Id love to have met him.
Why.......would one go to a visiting rock star, and ask "how does it feel to be a superstar"...❓ No wonder he burst out laughing , because he was far from a superstar beyond England's borders. Everywhere else he was struggling to gain mass acceptance , despite his one major world hit "Get It On".... which he failed to repeat outside the U.K....
Which often was a cold shower, when after almost Beatle like "T-Rextacy" in the U.K. ,travelling to other countries he was hardly noticed at airports.....and had trouble selling out major venues outside the U.K. Marc definitely had no Bowie like acceptance.
No wonder he doggedly kept on chasing that U.K. teeny bopper market, with often that same twelve bar boogie woogie rehashing....For all these other U.K. "glam" acts like Slade, Bay City Rollers or Sweet ,it was the same story, after maybe one minor hit in te U.S. , they failed to make a lasting impression.....and while they were out trying to crack that elusive U.S. market through exhausting coast to coast touring , they were forgotten back home.....
Dear Lady Stardust, we will always miss you. You rocked it hard!
I've known of Marc Bolan for as long as I could remember. It's especially nice to learn more about him on a personal level from those who knew him well. The world still misses you Marc.
Thanks for sharing
From the moment I accidentally saw him on Top of the Pops I was hooked. It was Metal Guru. Before that I’d never heard of Marc Bolan and had no interest in pop music. He changed my life. I was 14 and now I’m 60. I’m still listening to T Rex and u tubing him.
Pure genius. I listen to Marc at least once a week and have been for decades. Seems like he is still the cutting edge at times.
Thanks i saw T Rex in 71 or 72 have always loved their music but being a Canadian didn't know a lot of the back story till now. This was excellent :) I'm 68 now and still listen to them weekly
Marc was absolutely unique, refreshingly ahead of his time and earned every shred of his iconic status. Loved every minute. R.I.P. Mr Bolan.
How can you not love this guy?
Thank you for "BBC Marc Bolan; The Final Word." Fantastic! I've wondered what happened since "Electric Warrior" in 1973 with marriage and a baby carriage, I changed play grounds and lost touch with close mate's in my music life...children all grown, 1 of 7 got my love and taste of Nolan and now teaches me; heck of a drummer and knows more about the blue's 1940's and more! He'll love this..not many of us old hippies still around. Again, thanks for the missing chapter of the Bolan legacy in my "bucket list." Peace, love and good memories to all. Don't bogart and watch for the miracles of this life He died for that we could learn to dance and do so in abundance. KJOHN
I loved marc.... still do, an iconic, arrogant talent taken too early. Todays youth dont know what theyve missed - and Marc is truly missed x
what a great entertainer ...larger than life...so colourful...so lively...i think that everyone has danced to his song and felt good about it....enough said...
Really an inspiration. I went to his house and its a moment to remember
Enjoyed this.
Loved the days of dancing around the playground to Metal Guru and Telegram Sam as a school kid. A joyous musician and performer with an arty edge but as human and fallible as the rest of us.
Hats off to Tony Visconti too for his work in that era.
Oh this takes me right back to when I was a kid. I loved Marc Bolan. Ride A White Swan, Hot Love, Jeepster I'm transported back to happy times. Apart from Metal Guru. That song is bittersweet for me, I loved it but my mam died that year.
How often do people write things like "that's 3 minutes I'll never get back", well that was 1 hour 17 minutes and 44 seconds I gladly gave up. What a wonderful trip down memory lane with interesting information and great music. Thank you so much to the creators and simonkruus for uploading this.
nice spin on that stupid phrase people say (as if they'd have been spending that time on something crucial, otherwise)
So sad but so glad he died young,he was destined to be forever young loved him when I was a teenager loved his music little Marc will always be in my heart, always and forever
lovely expression: "one had lost the physical continuity of the friend". really enjoyed this

Victoria Sage His dealer is probably dead as well !,,
I love Marc, had such a unique voice, I also love Harry Styles, and at 22.11 that still of Marc is so vibe-y of Harry gave me chills, Marc was taken too soon, but then he was way before his time in his wonderful music, 'that' day as horrific...
I clicked on this video to watch for one minute and ended up watching the entire thing
Austin Stambaugh Likewise Austin old chap, he was more interesting than I imagined.....
Me too!
Me too! I thought I would watch for a minute and made it through till the end. He lived in a magical musical age that hasn't been matched since and may never be for a very long time. When we lost Bowie the continuum of this extraordinary lyrical era seemed to have perished.
Austin Stambaugh me too
Austin Stambaugh I'm about to do the same ... "oh yes, T Rex, I remember.. let's see just a couple minutes of that front man, what was his name..?"
Awesome! So many memories, so many happy times. Thank you for sharing.

i was born in 1974 i love marc bolan i was only nearly 3 when he died in 1977 i wish he was alive now i was a true marc bolan fan he is amazing !
He'd be a washed-up has-been
Loved him, his music and his fashion. Really impacted me as a child.
Marc was such an incredibly handsome guy, not to mention his fashion sense and musical genius. And a very nice person. Such a shame that he was tragically taken so young.
You're absolutely right about that
I find him average-looking but there's no arguing with taste is there😉
*@Kieran O'Driscoll* _Those who were close to him or knew him the best would find "nice" somewhat debatable.
Not denying his obvious major talent ofcourse.......
David Bowie and Steve Harley spoke highly of him, Gloria seems to have loving memories of him, so did June for that matter. Seems nice enough to me.
*@Ann White* Ofcourse......people tend to speak only good about the dead , which is understandable....
Marc's character flaws are easily forgivable , thanks to the brilliant music he produced.
We lost Marc way too early......a wonderful man, can you imagine what we might have been listening to if Marc had got together with Stevie Nicks to write and sing!!!!!!
I cried on the day he died. Still a fan.
So did I. It was the first time death entered my life.
oh my goodness, he was and still is phenomenal, Rest In Peace Marc Bolan x
yes...visconti was BRILLIANT. he turned bolan from a wacko bongo poet to the clean sweet well crafted sound of T. REX.
"Wacko bongo poet"! Hilarious! Great music, though!
genius mchaggis Visconti worked with Bowie on his last album, bet you didnt know that lol
Marc bolan was the best. And still is. We all miss him xxx
Ashley Bullman yess! You Said it.
WE ALL MISS HIM AND HIS MUSIC.
Marc Bolan is the ONLY dead Rock Star who, to me at least, doesn't feel dead. Seem dead. His passing, forty years on now, just doesn't make any sense. It's, like, he's very much alive. Doesn't age a day. Is still contemporary, still relevant, still here. Of This Time.
Thanks.
Keep a little Marc in your heart.
I would agree with that, so odd to listen seems like yesterday when I hear and see archival stuff. its still so fresh such a trip.
True. I probably hear his and Bowie's music more now in movie soundtracks and commercials than any other musician still living.
Wow. I agree. I dont believe he is real. Ive only felt like that about Bowie.
Really love this documentare, watch it over and over, see something new every time. Rest in peace, Marc Bolan.
with a face like his and a natural feel for music this guy was always gonna be something special. i myself fell a bit into the trap of labelling him as only 'pop' for a while. recently returned and was really surprised as to how good his old stuff still sounded. personally love the slider tanx era. top, top guy sadly missed
In an effort to complete my T. Rex Wax Co. vinyl, I'm liking more of the later stuff than I did before. Great production but T.. Rex studio energy was meant to be heard on vinyl. Vastly underrated guitarist.
Finally, a GREAT documentary with GREAT interviewees!
GET IT ON one of the best records I ever heard.
Still oft-used in movies to this day...
That’s about the only trex song I heard played on the radio in California
Thank god for film. I was born the year he started his career and in my life he meant a lot to me.
40 years without him today.
R. I.P.
Music was moving so fast back then. New, great albums every year.
Just hearing them say he's been "sticking to the same formula for 3-4 years" really gives you perspective. Back then artists grew so quickly that they could be seen as repetitive if they didn't change for just a few years. But Today 3-4 years seem like nothing and I'd be quite surprised to see an artist change their style in such a short timespan
+BenRangel now they take 3-4 yrs between albums. we'll never have hard-working bands again. Musicians that have the normal drive of those guys back then, end up in 2 or 3 bands now.
We lost two musical greats in '77! One of Marc's idols, Elvis - Aug 16, and one month later Marc - Sept 16. The sad summer of '77.
Elvis pfffffffft
And one month later Lynyrd Skynyrd plane crash, 10-20-77. (The 7th day into my 13th year, B 10/13/65). Hey enjoy this 2018 Skynyrd Showtime Doc/movie:

The tree where Marc was killed {and Marc's house} was near where we lived as kids {East Sheen} and the tree for decades had its bark stripped off by fans.
Tragic to lose him like this.
Legend marc Bolan 💖💯🔥♥️🎸🎤🎼🎼🎵🎶
I use to get in from school and watch 'Marc' on tv...great times....
Damn! At age 64 I remember when Jeepster and Bang A Gong were just hitting the radio! WOW! ❄️🌍❄️
Not fair, you're so lucky to have lived through that time! I was born in '82 which is truly lousy.. Totally missed out on everything good.
Much to my Fathers disgust I loved Bolan from the time I was 8 years old - massive influence on my music and playing as a drummer still.
Rest In Peace Marc bolan
Friend of mine went to a free concert when he was a teenager. Took his sister with him. Marc Bolan’s band was playing, and Robert Plant was in a band that was also playing that day. Must have been a helluva free gig. His sister saw Bolan go on stage and she ran up to it and twisted her ankle and fell very awkwardly. Bolan stopped what he was doing and made sure she was Ok and got her a seat on the side of the stage, and made sure after the show that she was OK. Naturally my mate and his sisters were fans for life.
Loved him then and this documentary brings it back. Listen to "Ballroom of Mars." May his memory be for a blessing.
Tony Visconti, unsung genius
Brilliant brilliant memories miss you Marc
A nice smile & nice eyes & nice hair & music that went well with drugs-yes so true. Many mysticle nights with Marc Bolan/Trex. Now I can listen to his music and feel stoned naturally I can feel like I did years. His music does that to you.
what an Awesome Musician he is missed.
Gloria Jones ... Tainted Love ..... DOH !! Didn`t realise the connection until now and the penny`s just dropped after all these years. Great documentary , Marc Bolan was my first childhood idol
When I think of THEE quintessential rock star the 1st name that always comes to mind is Marc Bolan.
U2: Hold me, Thrill me, Kiss me...; Oasis: Cigarettes and Alcohol; Placebo: Every you and every me...
This list could go on for ever: Marc Bolan still is everywhere!
Olympic1911 Cigarettes and alcohol tho... Sounds identical to Get It On .-.
Isn't.
One of the most influential artists ever on Brit rock scene!
Marc Bolan...a true pop legend
Marc Bolan was an angel of the universe! His music was utterly unique as well as that for the charts! Who else can say that other than Elvis, Bowie & Michael Jackson! People... Bolan lives...
I adored Marc, totally gutted at 13 years old when he died, but it's pretty sad how he treated Tony Visconti.
Rock 'n Roll needs a big kick up the ass by someone like Marc Bolan. Somebody who could make electric guitar music sexy again
Whilst Transvestite Rock may be your preference it is not eveybodies. Try some real rock. Or just be a man.

I never even knew who he was before I saw this.
Now I fall asleep singing Cosmic Dancer to myself.
It must have been so magical to see him live.
I danced myself right out the womb..... I danced myself into the tomb, heavy stuff
What are you saying that you had never heard of Marc Bolan
@@fattwat1 That was my interpretation...
I began noticing him when I was 15 (going to 16) I still remember. It was May 2015! I was in the middle of studying for my final exams, finishing up my freshman year in high school. I was distracted using my phone and during that time I was a crazy fan with classic rock from 60s and 70s. I opened up IG and followed accounts on artists that were heavily during that time era and i saw a photo of Ringo Starr with a strange handsome curly hair rocker. I was curious who he was and then I realized it was Marc Bolan. I went crazy when I first listened to Jeepster. 😍 I listened to him that summer of 2015 and I felt relaxed and addicted to his music. 😍😍😍 I still love his music til this day! 💖
What a fight in 1971...which album do you want for Xmas ? Imagine, Electric Warrior, Ram, Fireball, Every Picture Tells a Story ? What a year !!
Dont forget Hunky Dory
And Zeppelin's 4th album
There's a good book by David Hepworth called Never A Dull Moment: 1971. Worth a read.

A great tribute to a true creative genius. Marc Bolan inspired thousands of kids with his poetry and songs.
He was beautiful
Without a doubt, Electric Warrior was the album I grew up on! I still pull it out and play it again - LOUD!
I remember the day it was announced that Marc had been killed in a car crash. I got up early from my warm bed that had a poster above my bed rest of Marc. I went with my mother to join a long line cueing up for bread out side a bakery as the UK was on a bread strike It was 6am in the morning and someone has a transistor radio in the cue, it came on the news that he had been killed. I remember everyone being shock at the tragic news including my mum and me. It was such a bleak September morning and Marc was the talk till the bakers opened its doors. His music was being played out loud from this little transistor from the radio station in tribute.
I was staying at June's house in Fulham, Paul Varley was her then partner, we were speechless. I do blame Gloria for being pissed, she should have never been driving.
65rowan it’s the tribute we could do

What an absolutely fantastic biography. Thumbs up to Suzie Q. for her work. She did this documentary with a lot of love. He was a beautiful and striking young man. his face was gorgeous, like finely chiseled. His hair was amazing. I thought he was cute even when he gained the weight. He appeared to be so beautiful on the inside too. I loved his style sense , including the boa's. Just my style. My best friend and I used to copy his make up. We has super straight, long hair so we couldn't do his hair. We did Bowie's hair instead, feather cut and dyed red. My wall was plastered with his pics. Too bad he got healthy so shortly before he passed away. He wouldn't have has to go through all of that shit he went through. He was my biggest teenage crush.
Keep a Little marc in your heart.

This documentary is incredible. Thanks so much for posting it!
My eternal hero ...Marc 🔥
beautiful marc a thing of beauty is a joy forever he was still is a joy for me
I see the tributes to Mark Bolan at Golders Green crematorium where I like to visit, the plaque and the bench shaped like a swan in his memory. People recognise him for his celebration of life, his unique and influential style (Noel Gallagher has drawn from his influence for example, in his songwriting, and those songs are ace....) his sexy, magical freedom inherent in his style and music. Marc left his mark. And what a beautiful piece of our great musical inheritance it constitutes. Keep the spirit, keep the faith.💖💖💖💋🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶✌🏽
This is put together brilliantly, loved it
Pride came before the fall...... too bad...... loved you Marc....
What makes it even more sad was that Marc was one of many artists who died just as they were making a comeback. Billy Fury was on a verge of a comeback in 1982, felled by a heart attack. John Lennon came out of a five year seclusion in 1980, shot by a lunatic. David Bowie returned to the scene only to be struck down by cancer. So sad.
Marc was brilliant. Love all his records.
R.I.P. Marc.
Liked him, my first ever single purchase was 'Ride a White Swan'. But in all honesty he had, and enjoyed, all the success that was due to him. He would never have been big again, he wasn't a Bowie.
Its a familiar story, Bolan constantly and obsessively trying to reinvent himself in the late 60s. Bowie did the same. No wonder so much great music came from this era. That's what's missing today, its why there is no good music today. There's no hunger for greatness.
+Charles Black I think a lot of it has to do with the way music is distributed now. The whole business is just a shadow of what it was back then. There surely are people who want to be great but it's like pulling teeth to get out there because there aren't big studios bankrolling things the way they used to. Such a Catch-22; you can't go on tour unless you get big, and you can't get big unless you go on tour.
They even had full size, all 5 foot 3, cardboard Marc Bolan from Elwctric Warrior cover in the record stores. It was just there, still life in Glittrer land welcoming us all to a new sound. Eddie Cochran would have been proud.
That album paved the way. Tony Viscomti certainly had the touch for awakening the glam rock on us all back then.
57Strudel true
Was Tony Viscomti a transvestite as well?
Difference is, Bowie learned, Bolan was stuck.
His music still sounds fresh and unlike anything else. Not just his rockin hits but weird songs like Ballrooms of Mars and the haunting Once upon the Seas of Abyssinia. Would love to know what was going through his mind when he came up with these songs. Sadly, we will never know.
Rest In Peace marc bolan
He's a God of Glam Rock! I was 20 (2014) when I first hear his songs. I was stunned when I hear 20th Century Boy
