  • In 1979, the Lakers drafted Magic Johnson first overall, but it was far from that easy. The Bulls had a chance at him, he could've returned to college, the Celtics could've paired Magic with Bird - all of which depended on how a single coin fell.

      Soon it was commonplace for entire teams to change cities in search of greater profits. The Minneapolis Lakers moved to Los Angeles where there are no lakes. The Oilers moved to Tennessee where there is no oil. The Jazz moved to Salt Lake City where they don't allow music.

      SUPER SAMMICH yes and no! On one hand, those two guys would’ve been a good pair even if they didn’t get along off the court. They played on a US team in 1978 and they meshed together on the court. But on the other hand, Bird was probably the better scorer while Magic had to wait until later to be a scorer. So Bird would’ve overshadowed Magic had they been on the same team.

    • @franjes9999
      @franjes9999 6 років тому +13

      KROCKOHOLICSHTOWN they were actually a good pair off court they were friends the only reason they didn't like each other was the rivalry between Boston and LA
      If they played together Magic would've been dropping so many assists for Bird his stat line would've been like 15 and 20 whilst Bird would've just done nothing but drop points probably like 30-35 a game
      It actually would've impacted Bird more cause he'd basically only be scoring with Magic on the court that passing and rebounding ability would've been somewhat minimised. Whilst Magic would've appeared to be a somewhat weaker scorer but he'd still appear to be the all round superstar everyone saw him as in LA

    This is extremely similar to the situation that occurred between the Milwaukee Bucks and Phoenix Suns in 1969. They were both the worst teams in their respective conferences and had to flip a coin to determine who would pick first, and ultimately, who would select Kareem Adbul-Jabbar. If Kareem had gone to the Suns they probably would've won a championship, similar to how the Bucks won one with Kareem and the Big O.

    • @razkable
      @razkable 6 років тому +2

      they did make the 76 finals without kareem but Oscar bobby d and alcinder was a big 3 unlike most others in 71 so I doubt the suns would of made a title run pre 1975 without trades for stars that the bucks had already in place before

    5:47...no. Milwaukee's last season in the West was Magic's rookie year. They lost a brutal seven game series to the defending champion Sonics. They moved East in for the 80-81 season. Magic doesn't affect them. Seattle very well may have gotten back to the Finals in 1980 if Magic was in Oakland. They lost to the Lakers in five, but Magic swung that series and games were competitive. The Spurs are definitely the team that stands to benefit the most. Specifically, George Gervin. His legacy is different if he gets to the 1982 and/or 1983 Finals against Philly, win or lose. Then again, LA accumulated so much talent, maybe they STILL win with Norm Nixon running point alongside Michael Cooper, with Jamaal Wilkes and of course, Kareem in the pivot.

    If the Bulls had been able to talk Magic out of returning to school and signed him, they probably wouldn't have been bad enough to get the #3 pick that they signed Jordan with, so even in that scenario, there is no Magic-Michael backcourt. If everything else held, ignoring ripple effects, the #4 pick in 1984, which would have bumped up to #3 (we assume Houston and Portland would have made the same picks), belonged to the Dallas Mavericks, a team which made it to the Western Conference finals in 1988. It took 7 games to eliminate them, and the team that did it was the Lakers. Reimagine the Mavericks with Michael Jordan vs. the Lakers without Magic Johnson.

But with Chicago being a major city and not far from Lansing, it would have been too tempting for a 19-year old Magic to turn it down.

    Pause at 0:50 and read the quotes from Paul Westhead, then coach of the Lakers, about Magic. Called him a "plowhorse" who bungled his way into scoring... and this is after his point guard had just won MVP of the finals playing center? Small wonder that Westhead was fired and replaced by Pat Riley. I don't believe a coach needs to kiss a star's butt every day, but maybe he could at least avoid talking crap about him immediately after the guy carries the team to a championship in miraculous fashion.

    How about this.
    What if Magic stayed for his senior year? Which would have put him in the 1981 draft. Dallas had the 1st pick that year and Detroit had the 2nd pick. The Mavericks had just finished their inaugural season so there’s a possibility he’s not going to want to play for an expansion team going into year two. But the chance to stay in his home state and play for the Pistons on the other hand. 🤔 And chances are Dallas would have been open to swapping pics with Detroit considering their first round pick in 1980 Kiki Vandeweghe refused to sign with them. So they probably weren’t going to be willing to go through that 2 years in a row. And would have been left with choosing either Isaiah Thomas or the guy they did take Mark Aguirre.

    Yes, thank goodness we have the perfect draft system now. Where the college players end up playing for the same city in the NBA as the school they went to 90% of the time.

    You really think that Boston would have given up Magic, for Robert Parrish?
    They would have more likely traded future first rounds, along with a lot of other things, for Parrish, which would have gotten Parrish, Johnson, and Bird on the same team.

    Celtics would have drafted Magic Johnson in your scenario here. He was a sure fire superstar and there was no way they would have dealt him like they did Joe Barry Carroll....

    If you rewrite one small detail, everything would change
    Every single basketball fact that we know would be wrong, most of the players would change teams for the entire history after that. The smallest variable would be wins, with different teams wins would probably be different, drafts woulc change orders, trades would be different...
    This could be the case with mediocre players, with someone like Magic? Yeah, nothing would be the same
