This tutorial legit makes my uke sound like brother IZ playing it. Thanks a lot. Can’t wait to see more tutorials on other songs.
I watched other tutorial videos and they weren't able to capture the way IZ performs the song like you were able to! I've been wanting to learn this song for a while now so thank you for the great explanation and demonstration!
Thank you so much for the kind words!! Glad I could help!
I really feel with your explanation, I am able to achieve my dream song!

@@StevenEspaniola Good
I don’t know what it is about you, but you are such a relaxing and relatable teacher. Sometimes I stress when playing this, and this video always makes me approach my ukulele with a lot more ease and less stress about getting everything absolutely perfect every time. Exactly the way the ukulele should be approached every time I guess! Thank you!!!
Thank you so much Ricky!!
@@StevenEspaniola Agree!
Great video!! finally i found someone teaching it the way Iz played
Thank you so much!! Glad you like it ;) I plan to do an updated version that covers the entire song.
The best tutorial 👏👏👏
Best tutorial so far!!!!
Mahalo!!!
It's little bit difficult but im still watching every day this video
Excellent tutorial! Easy way to learn with good visuals of the chords and the strumming. Thanks! Hope you give an online lesson series!
Mahalo! Yes, be sure to subscribe to the channel and click notifications ;) I upload tutorials converting Hawaiian songs from the He Mele Aloha book. I also give private instruction over Zoom
Thank you so much! 2 questions: 1) where can I find the rest of the chords for this song? Can’t find it on your website &
2) I have a high G ukulele and it just doesn’t sound right even after your fabulous teaching. Any advice? I don’t want to restring my ukulele just for one song… Although I’m tempted because this is the greatest song of all time!
Thanks Steven! you’re awesome!
Great tutorial 👍🏻 & such an amazing voice , I can’t even sing the ooooooos let alone sing 😂 must get a low g on my ukulele, thank you 😊
Awesome having some fun with this song now
That’s awesome!!!
Love it, good job!
You are a great teacher! There are tons of tutorial site, but you are the best. I'm almost practicing every day with your UA-cam channel. My target is play and sing comfortably this wonderful song by the end of this year! One thing that I cannot play is after the intro, start to sing ooo, the second C. You are playing mixed with another code. (C Em F C)
Could you tell me the code which is exactly the same as you playing?
Wow, thank you! Mahalo for watching!!
great , lovely teaching ! thank you sooo much
Thanks!! Uploading an update to this strum today!

Love you explanation on how to play. I am a beginner, and I have been wanting to play this song since I got my first uku. This is my dream to play really well. I have been playing for 6 months only. Practicing a lot. You may be the one who will help me to do this song the way I really want, like IZ!
Thanks Mr Steven🤩👍🎶
Mahalo for continuing to watch Harry!!
wow! I always thought izzy was chucking but i was just the thumb doing the work lol
thanks so much for the detail on the strumming and talking of Nu-ull (?)
Thank you for watching!!
Mahlo Thank you for the great tips for strumming this song.
Mahalo!! I plan to do a newer vid where we cover the entire song!! Probably in 2 parts.
Loved your lesson! I learned what a beautiful right hand strum should sound like. Thank you so much!
Now I only have to practice.

Hey man just came across this video. I see that is 4 years old at this point but I just want to say great job, I love your take on putting feel and emotion into the song.
Thanks you!! I’ve been toying with the idea of filming an update to this vid. Let me know if you’d like to see that. Be sure to subscribe and check out the newer vids too…thanks for finding!
@@StevenEspaniola I gave you a like and subscribe. I’ve been playing guitar for about 15 years now and I’m about to pick up the ukulele. I would love to see an updated video on this song. I’ve recently dove into the history of IZ and I’m enjoying every minute of it, along with learning about the culture. I can see that your passionate in your playing and I respect that!!
@@TrailerParkBoyLive mahalo!! I appreciate your feedback!! Nice to know people out there benefitting from the vids! You’ll love the uke!
Outstanding!
Thank you so much!!
I love this song and you have a real talent for showing how to play.
I'm totally new to Ukulele but slowly getting started.
Keep doing the vids. ✌️
Howzit brahdah? My cousin is Iz. His strum is a bit faster! Keep the good work going. Mahalo uncle Steven.
Awesome!! Mahalo nui!!

I'm loving that Tenor man!
Thank you!!
Looks huge for a tenor! To me anyway. Is it possibly a Baritone?
A palm mute after Thumb D U takes it to the next level.
I want to get a good ukulele. I lived in kaneohe bay on the marine corps base. I loved it while I was in. When I got home back to east coast mainland I felt empty. Wish I had the money to move back. I would spend the rest of my life there with the spirit of bruddah IZ And king Kamehameha and the "duke". Never went to diamond head. I will go there one day. Thanks for the tutorial bruh. Aloha and mahalo \m/
Mahalo nui for the support! Look into Kanile'a or Islander if you're considering a new uke ;)
Nice vocals and strumming/ chord demo.
Love your recording of Pua Mana! Thank you for your presence on UA-cam!
Thumb |DU| UDU Thankyou very much .I’ll practice this ❤️
Nice. Thanks so much.
Awesome instructional! I am still struggling with the thumb placement of my left hand.. really struggling to keep it stable or to move it and adjust to switch chords. Especially when switching C to Em... Is it just practice or is there a proper fool-proof technique? Thanks :D
Awesome
I was looking for thus one. What kind of low G String Uke would you recommend…
Great tutorial, thanks !
Thanks for watching the vids!!
For the strum, if you are counting: 1, down v; and, X; 2, down v; and, up^; 3, X; and up^, 4, down v; and, up ^ (x means don't play)
@2:44 strum
@3:29 intro
@4:55 2nd intro (and @6:48)
@8:10 the whole thing
Hi Steven, I like the sound of your uke. What's the model and where can I get one? It needs a low G right?
Aloha! I play Kanile'a 'Ukulele. Yup low G! You can use code "STEVEN ESPANIOLA" to receive 10% off if you purchase directly from them. www.kanileaukulele.com
Is this Tenor or Baritone? Sounds out of the world ...
I think IZ also used a bit of staccato on the strum as well, on the 4th and 8th...maybe?
Nice observation!
Thanks for the tutorial. The strumming pattern sounds just like the original version. But on my concert ukulele the G string sounds a lot higher than yours so it doesn't seem to work well as the base note. Any ideas why?
Quang Tran aloha and thx for the comment!! Yes you really do need to have a lower G string when replicating this particular strum. The thicker gauge really emphasizes that much needed bass pattern. The high G doesn't really give the same effect. Really simple to swap out if you want to experiment. You can buy low G singles online.
A ha! I'm a ukulele newb and didn't know about the low G string. Thanks!
Quang Tran cool, feel free to ask any questions at all and welcome to the world of uke!!

@@StevenEspaniola wait wait wait a lower G string so I can play it always that way!?
Thank you!!!!!
Mahalo Steven! I have been working on this song (the Wonderful World version) for ages. I have not watched the whole tutorial yet, just working on the strum so far. I had been practicing with a chunk (with my right hand) after the first down up, then up down up. Now I am trying to remove the chunk to get a smoother strum like yours.
Awesome brother Liko!!! Hope it helps ;) Lemme know!
Here is the updated vid! bit.ly/2MwxQJo
Thumb DU mute all strings with your right hand little pinky fast straight into UDU gives it IZ actual way of playing the song and the sound is so much better give it a try, you'll not regret it 😊
Thanks for watching!

Gracias!!
Brilliant video and wonderful teaching method.

Great tutorial, thanks. Useful tip about the G tuning. I did see somewhere that Iz used a wound top string. Don’t know if that’s true.
Mahalo! Yup, IZ used a wound low G
nice Video, IZ is playing it on the studio version a little bit different, he sometimes mutes the strings, the cords are not all the time open. you hear thhar well on the 2nd chord of the song. best wishes from Berlin
Great
Thank you!
One of the beet version played n explained ...

You are a gold medal winner.
Thanks! I plan on updating this vid to go through the entire song.

very helpful thank you
what kind of ukelele do you have?? mine sounds a little different
Aloha! I am a Kanileʻa ʻUkulele artist…this one is a custom Super Tenor from 2006. I actually also have my own signature series with Kanileʻa as well ;) www.stevenespaniola.com/signature
i want to play it this good so bad i have a maholo uke whats good ?
Is there a way you can do the thumb thing on an concert Ike with a high g?
I would just play it the same way, it’ll just sound a little different. You can also start the sequence starting on the lower C string and alternating the pattern.
I got the chills when you closed your eyes and really let yourself go. Mesmerizing. Thank you for a great tutorial :D

OK, but I'm pretty sure there is a "chuck" in IZ's strumming pattern.
is there a special tuning??
Pretty close! Just missing the mute strum
Is your index finger strumming on the nail or on the side of it the fleshy part?
Nail side ;)
Man learning to play the ukulele is harder then I thought lol .. Ive been Jaming for 6 hours now trying to get this strumming down it's coming along but not that good yet .. Really excited to learn this I have zero skills with guitars and Ukuleles ,, I'm just a surfer from the Azores one Island brother to another Island Brother .. Shaka Brothda
Thanks for finding!! Keep at it...gets easier ;)

hi, heel mooi, jij bent heel duidelijk en je zingt goed mooi stem. ciao
Alfredo Bonfiglio nog bedankt met de vriendelijke woorden!!
I don't understand that g string at all. I've tried tuning down like 3 times, and it just sounds wrong. Maybe I need to change the string out altogether?
Kyle Rebstock yes, you need a special string with a thicker gauge for the low G. Otherwise will be too flappy. Most music stores will sell the single string replacement ;)
Very useful! Thank you from my daughter !
Thank you!!
Best tutorial yet. THANKS so much.
Mahalo!! Glad you enjoyed it! I plan to do an update to the vid ;)

Hi. is that a Baritone strung in a G,C,E,A set up?
No, just a standard tenor 'ukulele

Did IZ play with a low G string?
Paul Land hi Paul! Yes he did ;)
@@StevenEspaniola Thanks, Steven! I found some other videos that confirmed your reply. I've already put a low G on my ukulele! I visited the Kanile'a factory on Oahu a couple years ago, and they said that some players prefer the low G. I'll give it a try! Thanks again!
Yes, totally personal preference! I like the full sound that the low G brings. Can also do some cool things with “bass” parts using your thumb...let me know how you like it!!
Thank you for this! 😌❤️❤️❤️

😰 No link to a chord sheet.
No, because the focus was the strum and not the entire song although I may put the PDF up on my website for download. I also plan on updating this vid since it's a few years old
I sent ya $5.00 to your Venmo as a thank you gift for this very helpful video!
Do you sell your own signature Ukuleles ?
Not urgent, just curious
Thank you so much!! I do actually have my own signature ʻukulele with Kanileʻa ʻUkulele. All Hawaiian koa with ebony fingerboard and binding accents.

আমার গান আমার সুর Aloha! Are you talking about chord charts? Check out my latest vids...I put chord charts in the left corner. I may redo this vid someday ;) ua-cam.com/video/UF2ClLnFoxg/v-deo.html
You are talented, but like most tutorials on this song, everyones off on the strum pattern , just doesnt sound the same as Iz....BUT I found a video that was the best by far, he doesnt mute the strings, but by far the closest sounding , and the strum pattern he does is slightly different than everyone else, he starts with an up stroke, check it out link below and dare to compare to Iz and everyone esle, he's the closest sounding, it just flows better. (and if you dont have a low G, just hit "C" 2nd string & it sound very close to a low G.
THIS IS THE LINK: ua-cam.com/video/A-psZvNTSz4/v-deo.html
Thx for the observation...it's actually the exact same strum but includes that ghost pickup beat on the upstroke. If you listen to IZ's recording he does that in the intro then reverts to my strum during the body of the song. In actuality, there really shouldn't be that much thought put into the strum...it should come from the soul and should feel natural. Mahalo!
With respect you are a very-very talented artist, but your title says "PLAY LIKE IZ", i took the time to learn your strum pattern and rhythm. I tried to play along with IZ and definitely not the same, IZ's rhythm is faster, you may say your strum patterns exact, but it's not, just play his song along with yours, it's off, you sound great BUT I want to play it like IZ did, as close as possible.
If you believe you can PLAY LIKE IZ, Im sure you are talented enough to do it - then i challenge you (with total respect) to do another youtube video when you have time and sing/play more lyrics on your tutorial like the other guy did, you'll be the closest version tutorial of this song on youtube. That would be absolutely awesome, I'd love to watch it & even improve from it.
But right now the closest tutorial for PLAYING LIKE IZ is: ua-cam.com/video/A-psZvNTSz4/v-deo.html . Not that he's the better uke player or singer, BUT he took the time and got it right in relation to PLAYING LIKE IZ, which i really appreciated, because now I can PLAY "almost" LIKE IZ. Laki maikaʻi!

@@rickgomez9841 Respectfully disagree. First note of the 4/4 measure is a down stroke with the thumb that comes in on the 1st count.
The original sounds like it has a little chukka in it.
good tut..but please leave the chords up lol
not the easiest lesson to follow think Cynthia is a much better teacher, you would do well to check out the way she puts a lesson together, then learn to teach properly
