  • A brief introduction to geographical indications - signs used on products that have a specific geographical origin and possess qualities or a reputation that are due to that origin. Examples include Darjeeling Tea, Café de Colombia, Prosciutto di Parma, Scotch Whisky, Tequila, Argan Oil, and Swiss Watches.
    “Geographical indication” intellectual property rights let those who have the right to use the indication prevent its use by others whose product does not conform to their products’ standards.
    WIPO’s Lisbon System offers an international registration system for geographical indications through a single procedure. By means of a single registration procedure and a at minimum expense, the holder of a national or regional geographical indication may obtain the protection of the distinctive sign in the other contracting parties of the Lisbon System.
