    I like how he combines the high guard with good upper body movement. Never let the other guy get an easy target

      Was thinking the same thing. Its like Winky Wright + some bad ass head movement.

    I love this defense, it's not just him standing with his hands blocking his face, he is also catching punches, moving his head and hips and feet

    I had to watch it at half speed to see how he does this. It's so smooth, it looks like they just punch his gloves.

    Beautiful, efficient defence. If he'd been a more aggressive counterpuncher, he'd be on par with the big four of their day.

      It is the trade off. If you have very good tight defense like that, you cant be aggresive counterpuncher.

    Marlon Starling and James Toney, my 2 favorite fighters of all time. They both had there faults, but what a pleasure to watch them master the craft in the ring. Hard for any fighter to look good against them.

    Holding the highguard just high enough, leaning in and pushing forwards to reduce the power of punches, and swaying from side to side using his upper body to ensure he's off the center. Perfect example of the active high guard

    Such a Tough! Solid! Veteran of a Welterweight Was Starling . He was Tough to beat and was a handful right up until his retirement. He got better with age. Awesome Wleterwieght and my personal favourite at the Weight Class.

    • @VersatyleTV1
      @VersatyleTV1 9 місяців тому +2

      I can agree with that. Winky kind of slightly used head movement and his feet and keep that unpredictable jab in your face to keep you guessing while he moves forward. Marlon's was kind of interchangeable.

    I think a big percent of knockouts can be avoided by keeping your hands the fuck up! Where they should be in the first place. it blows my mind when i see pros with their hands all over the place except their face.

    • @grapedrank666

      Victor cabral If you look at the the greatest defensive fighters of all time they all kept their hands low and slipped punches.

    • @bloodndestroy

      It's because head and body movements are faster with hands down and moving around to help make the movements faster. Very few can have good and fast head movement with hands held high and fixed, most notable for doing this is Mike Tyson.

    hi to the producer of this channel, what do you think of the use of the high guard. because sometimes when i see a guy who punches really hard pounding on the shell of the opponent, it looks very dominant and the one shelling up looks like he's getting beat up. i watched this boxer called luke jackson when he was sparring and even though his opponents blocked the shots by using the shell defense, it looked so dominant when luke was pounding on the arms and gloves.

    • @hanzagod
      @hanzagod  8 років тому +5

      +CombatFitness I understand that from the spectators perspective it may seem like they take a beating but an effective high guard is a very good form of defense if it's used properly. As you can see with Starling here he had a great high guard but he'd move his head/waist as well so that's why I always refer to him as having the best active high guard of all time. Winky Wright had a great high guard too but he was more static.

    • @combatfitness7092
      @combatfitness7092 8 років тому +1

      haNZAgod yup can you check out the link i requested you to look especially the sparring session where he's in black and his opponent is in red and taller and i notice even though the guy in red is blocking them it seems that the guy in black is doing massive damage. i guess for boxing if you stand up static without moving much it looks really bad? and does it still score even if you stand static and take all the shots on the gloves and arms?

    • @hanzagod
      @hanzagod  8 років тому

      CombatFitness Depends on the judges really but I'd say most of them would give the round to the guy throwing more punches if the other guy is standing static and not throwing much back.

    • @combatfitness7092
      @combatfitness7092 8 років тому

      haNZAgod at the same time, this makes me wonder why we praise defensive fighters when they hit nothing but arms and glove like floyd. since most of floyd's opponents in the recent years threw more punches ( regardless a clean hit or a miss) . because if lets say the busier guy gets the round, then in that case floyd would have lost many rounds

    • @hanzagod
      @hanzagod  8 років тому +1

      +CombatFitness Floyd uses the shoulder roll though. High guards can be deceptive to some judges but they'll be able to see what lands/what doesn't land when using a shoulder roll.

    • @hanzagod
      @hanzagod  7 років тому +1

      Mark Anthony Starling wouldn't have beaten Leonard so definitely Curry or Pryor, it's a toss up between those 2. In his prime Donald Curry is one of the best Welterweights I've ever seen for sure.

    • @markant9534
      @markant9534 7 років тому

      haNZAgod Do you think Curry had problems dealing with quick busy, aggressive fighters like Honeyghan? Duran and Pryor come under that banner.

    Fighting out of Hartford and making the big time without a bob arum or don king is no easy task for a guy who's not flashy or hits hard and he had some bad breaks like the breland draw and getting knocked out after the bell.
