As an American, I've been watching and wondering about the situation for Scottish independence for a good while now. This style of video is definently the best way to present the situation to any passerby and I think that you make some awesome points about the factors that the 21st century globalization has had on the definition of a country.

I see the Scottish government trying to implement so many progressive initiatives but there's only so much they can do while being governed by Westminster. I always felt a small part of me would accept the UK if it felt more representative of every part of the union. Unfortunately, I just always feel it's very London-centric. Just my opinion on it. Really like how calmly you made your argument. I’m half Scottish but been brought up in England since birth and I’m pretty firm on the unionist side, as are much of my Scottish family. But tbh I totally get why you’d want to go it alone, massive pride for the country, but I do hope you decide to stay. We’re so much better as one great collection of nations - we’re only weaker apart! Defo up for federalisation though for parts of the UK that want it.
I fell asleep before I could finish it the first time, so here I am watching it again because I’m really interested in the topic 🤷🏻♀️ I feel extremely lucky to live in Scotland and I value its history & culture and I strongly believe we are such an amazing country (see it’s such a habit to say country) . Sometimes when there’s an option to put my nationality as Scottish instead of British I jump at the chance, but it’s so important to be aware fully of where we stand in this mad world and how held back we really are. And being a history lover myself I learn as much as I can about the wars for independence, & the Jacobites/highland clearances ect. A whole culture & language outlawed by the British army...and its mad to think Scotland has spent the best part of 700 years trying to maintain its independence/freedom. 🏴🏴
I’m on Active Military service in Scotland, from England, but i’m British through and through. I’m okay with being part of one entity, the United Kingdom, I always say that as my country. We’re a country of countries I see. But I understand your frustration and I only see Federalisation as the way forward. 🇬🇧
I hear ya. In many ways I still feel British at the core, but I've totally come around to the idea that Scotland needs to go it alone, but Federalism would be a logical next step, but given the nature of the UK and it's archaic way of doing things, I just can't see it happening.
This brings up some good questions and answers. And being a Scottish man myself it feels good to hear someone else bringing up some of the things I say to my friends and family. Sorry for the wording if it's bad, dyslexia is not good
Thanks for another fantastic vid Muzz! This one really peaked my interest. I’m Canadian myself and I have a close friend attending university in Scotland right now. I knew there have been political balance issues over there for quite some time but never knew the details! Would be cool to see you talk about more issues you have opinions on. I'm a Scottish person but I've been in Australia nine years. Still look over my shoulder when someone asks me about independence though. (Or what football team I support, lol).
I'm from England, but I don't consider myself to be English, I consider myself to be British. I enjoy the varieties of culture on one small island. I also feel like on a world scale it is best for us to work together as one. We are also great friends and share similar values. If Scotland were to leave I feel it may lead to Northern Ireland going to Ireland and England, Wales and the channel islands being in a new union.
Finally managed to watch through to the end at the third attempt without falling asleep! Interesting points made. Whilst I believe that a nation has the right to self-determination, the idea of a nation state seems such a 19th century concept and at odds with a globalised world. I am the opposite of a nationalist, that isn't a unionist, it is an internationalist, I believe there should be fewer borders, not more.
I completely agree. It really is an archaic concept, but unfortunately, that is how the world still organises itself. I still love the concept of the EU being closer to that idea version, where we have little or no borders. THAT is the type of union that I like. For Scotland, Nation State status is absolutely essential if it ever hopes to join the global family as an equal partner. Imperfect as it may be.
ASMR suits the Scottish accent in my opinion. This was interesting and relaxing! Also, I truly appreciate the dark background. some creators don’t keep it sleepy time friendly.
Actually very similar to Quebec, we tried twice to separate and a very much a nation. I was only 1 y.o. the second time we tried and failed by half a percent!

I'm kind of late to the party, but I had to tell you that, as a proud Québécois (or Quebecker as it is often said in english), I understand and relate to most of what you're saying in this video. Québec and Scotland do have similar situations, while remaining different in their own ways of course. Thriving nations in somehow yet-to-be countries.
The difference is that Scottish nationalism is not based in ethno nationalism and white supremacy. Can’t say the same about the Québécois. There’s practically Neo nazis and huge racists leading that movement. Scotland would be wise to use Quebec as an example of how not to run a nationalist movement.

I love Scotland so much! 🏴 I'm German and I've only been there once yet but I really feels like home to me and I sometimes wish I was Scottish. I miss it a lot these days and I wish to maybe one day live in Edinburgh, sie ist for retirement or at least buy a holiday home in Scotland. My place to live has to match with my future dream job as an orchestra musician (I'm only 15) but being in a Scottish orchestra and living in Edinburgh would be absolutely perfect. I feel a very strong connection to it, both culture-wise and in terms of nature, landscape history etc. The version of Loch Lohmond by the BBC Scottish National Orchestra always gets me emotional. (Sorry in advance- this comment is a very long one again.) Just realized that I haven't hit the like button yet, despite having been here almost 30 times by now. I enjoy all of your videos but this one is of a unique importance to me for I come here whenever my thoughts are racing and raging like a storm, making it unable for me to rest. The topic and the way you explain it is interesting enough to focus on it but not thrilling enough to prevent me from falling asleep, making it a perfect calm center in the middle of the storm. And sometimes I just remain in that peculiar state between being awake and drifting into sleep so I hear your voice and the words flowing by like a gentle river just at the edge of my consciousness. Today I additionally discovered this video not only calms my restless thoughts but also decreases the paralyzing weight of depression. (Aaand a big advantage of this video is that it's length allows me to adapt it (via sleep timer) to my needs. 🙂) 🇪🇺

As an American, I first came to be fascinated with Scotland from this book series I read. Very beautiful and fascinating. I’ve never been one for international travel. My country has lots to see that I haven’t see yet, but I’ve always wanted to visit Scotland. This was fascinating. As someone who is very much annoyed with the us way of politics, q peaceful divorce sounds nice to me.
Hello again, That was very interesting, I was actually not aware of many of the topics you spoke about, so, yes definitely enlightening. I was raised in Australia but have Scottish heritage, i like to consider myself part Scottish, culturally anyways. It terms of legalities etc i would definitely agree that Scotland isn’t a country, i think it should be, hopefully one day it will be. Go and get Katherine Janeway to simply use her incredible diplomatic skills to make it official 😁 I must say though, now that Im more informed about this topic, i can honestly say that I understand my grandpa a lot better now! thinking back on how he acted and his personality, it certainly makes a lot more sense to me.

Ok, is it just me or does the whole "Scotland calls itself a country" idea kinda similar to Pluto in a Rick and Morty episode (The government of Pluto wants people to keep calling it a planet because it will keep the general population happy and thinking that nothing is wrong) I thought I was well informed on Scotland's place in the UK (I'm Scottish DnG teen btw) but the point about having less control than Canadian provinces blew my mind. Definitely disrupted tonight's sleep schedule (I just used waaaaay too many words 😂)
I hear ya! the Canadian province example really proves that Scotland is not what we think it is and if people are ok with that, fine. But I think most people would be surprised and wonder why Scotland is not treated the way we describe it.

England, Scotland, Whales etc are somewhat akin to the states in the USA, they have their own bloody history, have significantly different economies and even cultures, i.e. Texas vs California. Though despite having their own culture and industry they aren’t their own fully autonomous places.
this would be an excellent lecture for a history class. You explained it very well. Being from the US it brought many issues to the forefront that I had not considered before, in the way you presented it. There are states in the USA that likely feel as Scotland does.and that’s the rub, right? Fear prevents people from expressing their thoughts.and further, it all comes down to money.
I used to be rather anti Scottish independence, and these days I'm way more ambivalent. It's an issue I generally stay away from, because I realise I'm not equipped to really analyse it. The only thing I worry about for my own life if Scotland left would be the Tories dominating British politics even more than they currently do. Sadly at this last election, Boris Johnson's nationalist posturing over Brexit conned a lot of otherwise Labour voting English people into voting Tory and they won a landslide. The impact this could have on my life is extremely worrying and terrible. But I also realise it's not Scottish people's responsibility to keep England's reactionary nationalist bullshit in check. From my own perspective, I hope Scotland says. From Scottish people's perspective, I don't know what's best for yous.
"Watch your mouth, colonial" is what they said to us as well, but this time, they put ballots in front of the Scots and David Cameron begged it to vote "no."
It is now completely illogical for Scotland not to go independent, no question about it now. What we need, and have not had for over 50 years, is representation. By that I mean, the will of the people must be reflected on the government we elect... we have not voted Tory for over 50 years and have had at least 6 Tory governments 🏴 what that means is democracy is broken, and it needs fixed, id love federalism but me personally, the governments in Westminster are not trustworthy anymore... they are currently trying to take back control of some devolved issues...

Your voice is relaxing yet I wanted to hear your content because its so important to me. I know I was born raised and live in another "country" & maybe to some I shouldn't comment on a place I've never been & the politics are complicated. However, when I found my Scottish blood/ancestry is so deep all over it in the people who made our families here, I've grown to absolutely love & feel such a strong powerful connection to this place no matter who calls it whatever they will. I understand how some countries may think they are "more powerful," can & will look down on it, but everyone must remember, many other countries would never be what they are without the contributions Scotland has made to them & the world 🌎. Thank you for creating this & never loose the love the land of your birth. Hopefully Scotland becomes independent in the coming years. The union no longer works, Scotland has become a vastly different political landscape with progressive values, in stark contrast with the inward looking right wing way the majority of the English population seem to want to go. 🏴
My direct descendant (as far as I can go back and research) is Robert De Brus. So of course I am all for Scottish Independence. I often think about "what if I lived in the 1300's? Great and interesting vid. Btw though, I'm pretty sure "federal system" has the connotation of reserving powers and autonomy for the constituent states. Maybe not quite as much as a purely devolved system, but still someone devolved relative to a centralized system. At least that's what I think I remember from my AP Government class...haha
Scotland, England, Northern Ireland and Wales are all considered Countries. But the UK is a "Country" too, moreso a Political Union. "Countries within a Country" is the phrase that best describes the UK. Scotland provides a lot more than it's given credit for, not a day goes by where I don't see a Scottish bottle of whisky on a shelf of a pub, shop or household.

Like Scotland, Catalonia is (unfortunately for Catalonia) treated as region too. Nobody recognises it as a country. But that's a whole other debate that I am not qualified to speak on. :-)
I get why Scottish people wan't to be independent, with the most convincing arguments being the separate culture and the fact that they are the newest member of the union. I am personally against it as all my family live in Scotland and I wouldn't want it to be harder to get there and see them, I love the country with my whole heart. However from a political standpoint, I think Scotland has it quite good already. It has a parliament and control over things such as healthcare, tourism, large numbers of its own laws, education and even taxation. It certainly has it better than England on a person by person basis seeing as England has no devolved assembly and all of it's laws are set by Westminster, this raised the problem of the west lothian question, why can Scottish MPs vote on English matters but English MPs do not have the right to vote on Scottish matters as they are a devolved parliament. Power has always resided in London yet the SNP and other Scottish Nationalists seem to make that a uniquely Scottish problem. I fully agreed with the decision to allow Scotland to decide in 2014 and understand that due to Brexit, the SNP would like another vote, I still believe it to be too soon after the previous one though, it would set the precedent that we can just have referendum after referendum until the desired result is achieved.
Most people I know in Scotland (Myself included) are bored of all the independence talk. We had a vote, respect the result and get back to the job at hand.
The job at hand can't be done mate. I live in a Canadian province and we can do way more than Scotland does. We can do the job at hand. All Scotland can do is tinker with a few insignificant laws while Westminster controls all the main stuff. Scotland is a region.

That was very interesting, I was actually not aware of many of the topics you spoke about, so, yes definitely enlightening. I was raised in Australia but have Scottish heritage, i like to consider myself part Scottish, culturally anyways. It terms of legalities etc i would definitely agree that Scotland isn’t a country, i think it should be, hopefully one day it will be. Go and get Katherine Janeway to simply use her incredible diplomatic skills to make it official 😁
I must say though, now that Im more informed about this topic, i can honestly say that I understand my grandpa a lot better now! thinking back on how he acted and his personality, it certainly makes a lot more sense to me.

Ok, is it just me or does the whole "Scotland calls itself a country" idea kinda similar to Pluto in a Rick and Morty episode (The government of Pluto wants people to keep calling it a planet because it will keep the general population happy and thinking that nothing is wrong)

I hear ya! the Canadian province example really proves that Scotland is not what we think it is and if people are ok with that, fine. But I think most people would be surprised and wonder why Scotland is not treated the way we describe it.

England, Scotland, Whales etc are somewhat akin to the states in the USA, they have their own bloody history, have significantly different economies and even cultures, i.e. Texas vs California. Though despite having their own culture and industry they aren’t their own fully autonomous places.
We are a federal society though. Unfortunately the overbearing nature of the us government is kinda of wrecking our system that leaves us harmonious

Being from the US it brought many issues to the forefront that I had not considered before, in the way you presented it. There are states in the USA that likely feel as Scotland does.and that’s the rub, right? Fear prevents people from expressing their thoughts.and further, it all comes down to money.

I'd be open to it! But knowing the UK there would need to be a lot of protections for the flood of people who would want to leave the UK.
I used to be rather anti Scottish independence, and these days I'm way more ambivalent. It's an issue I generally stay away from, because I realise I'm not equipped to really analyse it.
The only thing I worry about for my own life if Scotland left would be the Tories dominating British politics even more than they currently do. Sadly at this last election, Boris Johnson's nationalist posturing over Brexit conned a lot of otherwise Labour voting English people into voting Tory and they won a landslide. The impact this could have on my life is extremely worrying and terrible. But I also realise it's not Scottish people's responsibility to keep England's reactionary nationalist bullshit in check.
From my own perspective, I hope Scotland says. From Scottish people's perspective, I don't know what's best for yous.

It is now completely illogical for Scotland not to go independent, no question about it now. What we need, and have not had for over 50 years, is representation. By that I mean, the will of the people must be reflected on the government we elect... we have not voted Tory for over 50 years and have had at least 6 Tory governments 🏴 what that means is democracy is broken, and it needs fixed, id love federalism but me personally, the governments in Westminster are not trustworthy anymore... they are currently trying to take back control of some devolved issues...

Agreed mate. I've been yelling about this stuff for many years myself. Mostly regarding my views in the video where I suggest Scotland is not considered a country. That is dangerous and too many Scots are complacent about it. They think that word 'country' protects them. No, Boris can shut Holyrood tomorrow if he likes.

Sorry it me so long to find this & be able to listen all the way through. Your voice is relaxing yet I wanted to hear your content because its so important to me.
I know I was born raised and live in another "country" & maybe to some I shouldn't comment on a place I've never been & the politics are complicated.
However, when I found my Scottish blood/ancestry is so deep all over it in the people who made our families here, I've grown to absolutely love & feel such a strong powerful connection to this place no matter who calls it whatever they will.
I understand how some countries may think they are "more powerful," can & will look down on it, but everyone must remember, many other countries would never be what they are without the contributions Scotland has made to them & the world 🌎.
Thank you for creating this & never loose the love the land of your birth. With not only its rich history but the fact that many now all over the world can be thankful & happily proud of our identity & roots in the country, wonderful land & people worthy to be called such a remarkable Nation.

Hopefully Scotland becomes independent in the coming years. The union no longer works, Scotland has become a vastly different political landscape with progressive values, in stark contrast with the inward looking right wing way the majority of the English population seem to want to go. 🏴

My direct descendant (as far as I can go back and research) is Robert De Brus. So of course I am all for Scottish Independence. I often think about "what if I lived in the 1300's? Great and interesting vid. Btw though, I'm pretty sure "federal system" has the connotation of reserving powers and autonomy for the constituent states. Maybe not quite as much as a purely devolved system, but still someone devolved relative to a centralized system. At least that's what I think I remember from my AP Government class...haha
Scotland, England, Northern Ireland and Wales are all considered Countries.
But the UK is a "Country" too, moreso a Political Union.
"Countries within a Country" is the phrase that best describes the UK.
Scotland provides a lot more than it's given credit for, not a day goes by where I don't see a Scottish bottle of whisky on a shelf of a pub, shop or household.

I get why Scottish people wan't to be independent, with the most convincing arguments being the separate culture and the fact that they are the newest member of the union. I am personally against it as all my family live in Scotland and I wouldn't want it to be harder to get there and see them, I love the country with my whole heart. However from a political standpoint, I think Scotland has it quite good already. It has a parliament and control over things such as healthcare, tourism, large numbers of its own laws, education and even taxation. It certainly has it better than England on a person by person basis seeing as England has no devolved assembly and all of it's laws are set by Westminster, this raised the problem of the west lothian question, why can Scottish MPs vote on English matters but English MPs do not have the right to vote on Scottish matters as they are a devolved parliament. Power has always resided in London yet the SNP and other Scottish Nationalists seem to make that a uniquely Scottish problem. I fully agreed with the decision to allow Scotland to decide in 2014 and understand that due to Brexit, the SNP would like another vote, I still believe it to be too soon after the previous one though, it would set the precedent that we can just have referendum after referendum until the desired result is achieved.
Most people I know in Scotland (Myself included) are bored of all the independence talk. We had a vote, respect the result and get back to the job at hand.

I live in a Canadian province and we can do way more than Scotland does. We can do the job at hand.
All Scotland can do is tinker with a few insignificant laws while Westminster controls all the main stuff.
