In 1991, Sega released their video game mascot the blue blur by the name Sonic the Hedgehog. Over three decades Sonic has seen a lot of success and recent years have revealed that many of Sonic's fans are actually autistic! Today me and Thomas will be looking into all the reasons we think so many people in the autistic community love Sonic the Hedgehog!

Why autism people like Kirby?
Being an autistic and sonic fan myself, I have my own personal reasons on why Sonic is beloved by the autistic community; his kindness and how he treats his friends. It no secret that one of the traits that autistic people have is difficulties when it comes to socializations, we are more easily prone to be exploited, bullies and ostracized for that reason. I know I have bad memories of being bullied at school, making friends, only to lose them in just a year(often because they decided to bully me), and being alone during recess and lunch breaks. So, whenever I played Sonic and his friends, it shows me an example of how friendship should be. Sonic himself is the type that would always makes fun of his rivals, but hardly at his friends. I remember think that the sonic characters are my friends. Plus, during the "dark age," Sonic at that time seemed to always give the most tender and hopeful advices, to which it really helped me during my preteen and early teen years.
And on a side note, being a girl, I looked up to Amy Rose, since I relate to her the most growing up, she was my role model. She taught me to never stop achieving your dreams, no matter how hard it's gonna be.

I once read an article that said autistic people (mainly autistic male teens) had a fixation on speed/velocity. The academics were dubious, but when I think about:
-sonic
-trains
-naruto running
-speedrunning
It makes me wonder if there's some truth to it
I've actually heard about that too while I was doing research for this video. Maybe this could be something worth doing another video on, or a Tostemac Short at least.

i think why so many neurodivergent people latch on to Sonic is that he's "cool" but in a specific way that isn't intimidating like Solid Snake or Master Chief, Sonic and his friends are just a very approachable kind of cool that feels safe and non-judgemental but not too bland and kiddified to the point of patronizing like Mario
But Mario and Master Chief have more autistic fans. Well, more fans in general. Regardless of autistic or not.

@@Tostemac Master Chief is mysterious, he is violent, we dont know much of his past and cortana does all the thinking/talking for him. this is problably bechause the devs didnt want to make master chief to a big character who talks alot bechause the player can easier bond and think that they are master chief and what you think master chief is thinking too. its the silent protagonist approach similiar to Gordon Freeman of half-life. he never speaks bechause were meant to become him as we play and start caring for the charachters and story within the game.
Find it funny you bring up those two other characters, as Sonic, Halo, and Metal Gear are my 3 fav franchises
@@nize2beme I have some favourites, Sonic, Halo, Burnout, and Half-life, there's many others like those such as Unreal, quake and so on but these are some really good franchises.
I (probably) don't have autism, but I did grow up with severe social anxiety and I think I really appreciated Sonic's extreme confidence and friendliness and wished I could be like that. I also was pushed into a particular life path and so I also liked how Sonic was a free spirit who answered to no one but himself.

i don't believe i'm on the autism spectrum, but as a still very neurodivergent person, anything sonic-related tingles my brain in a good way so i deff relate 😂
Being a high-functioning autistic person myself, I have an entire Sonic UNIVERSE of characters, lore, even some music tracks unique to it! I have friends that help with voices, music, even art of these characters. The overwhelming support that’s given with this is always something to smile about. Game development is personally a great way for me to put my inspirations and ideas to use. Sonic has always been my interest since age 5, and won’t be leaving anytime soon.
Bottom line, I expected stereotypes in the video, but was pleasantly surprised to find unbiased, and factual information. Good job here.

Same here, I think Sonic Frontiers had the most character development in any Sonic game. You really see Tails and the others reflect on events in the past and think hard about how they want to move forward into the future. Makes me wonder how future Sonic games are going to go at this point in terms of stories.

The main society views autistic people as essentially not being able to process life in a meaningful way emotionally or socially only totally logically. Sonic as a series goes against this narrative as the series is very pro-social and about the relationships and experiences the characters have with each other as friends or enemies or somewhere in-between. However it's done in a mostly relaxed way that doesn't make autistic individuals nervous because it's very stylized and removed from the rough reality of the messy outside world.
ur absolutely right..im a 19 yo and im a Sonic fan...for the aspect of merging your mind into the fast pace perceiveness threshold is a thing i acquire and trying to apply it to things wither other games or life circumstances.. its a golden achievement for so many life instances and talk is not sufficient..great content..keep on going
As an autistic person myself I love Sonic The Hedgehog. Despite the ups and downs, to me I feel Sonic the character was more appealing than say other mascots for me. Like Mario and Mickey Mouse for example were design to appeal to kids and had the whimsical charm. In contrast, to me Sonic reminded me of mascots had were cool and had charming personality like Bugs Bunny or Cheestar Cheeto or the 90s mascots with shades and cool edge.
But unlike most 90s mascots that come and go I believe Sonic wasn't made to be awesome. He was created and shaped like a friend. He was your cool bro that supported you or a friend you wished you had. (Too be fair he has different interpretations but generally Sonic was your best friend till the very end.) Mickey could be your friend but generally speaking which do you prefer? A goody two shoes who is always good and is associated with a...complicated organization vs a cool spunky yet loyal friend and has a company that enjoys fanmade content.
It also doesn't help that Sonic is about freedom and liberty. I feel most autistic people would relate to the premise of Sonic, wanting to be free from how people judged them. And Eggman represents oppression and instead of sharing others they take it for themselves. I feel that's why Sonic is memorable for people and I do feel autistic people love him for that. He doesn't let judgment hurt him and be who he is.
Also he has a wonderful cast of characters such as rivals and friends. He also has one of the best character designs in fiction since his blue spines make him recognizable. He also has a perfect color palette and his series has the best VGM ost aka soundtrack. Believe me I love the Sonic music for its free melody and its rhythm encapsulates the energy of Sonic The Hedgehog. Freedom.
For me, I think its because I have a love for weird animals. Ever since I was a kid, I fell in love with sharks, dolphins, red pandas, etc. So seeing a series that had not only animals, but they were a cartoon? I was hooked

I'm not autistic, but I have ADHD. A lot of people confuse us for being autistic since they're pretty similar conditions. Sonic stood out to me, especially now, because as a character he symbolized freedom and self-expression. He fights for people to live to the fullest without restrictions or expectations. In fact, *chaos* is a central theme in the franchise, which is the foundation of freedom, and it helped me grow so much as a person with ADHD.
On the gameplay side, I'm also ADHD and so's my dad and we were actually talking about how he used to play Sonic 1 regularly and we pretty much concluded that on the the bright colors and high speed action both sort of scratch an itch in our brains.

ive loved sonic since i was a ljttle kid . personally always related to tails and his longing just to BE like someone as cool as sonic . i recently started incorporating sonic in some way in my day whether its media , music , clothes , pins , etc. and it just feels great ✨️ also went to sonic symphony a couple of weeks ago , 10/10 show , cried like 4 times 😭😭😭 and everyone in the community was so sweet !! 🥺

For me. It was the first game series I've ever played, and I just love the carefree yet friendly attitude of characters in the Sonic universe.
As a someone who has been a Sonic fan for about two decades, yes I am old, I actually love the Archie and IDW Sonic comics. They flesh out the world of Sonic the Hedgehog in creative ways. I never heard about autistic people being a large part of the Sonic community. I myself am on the autism spectrum, but I don’t usually think about it much.
I never even thought about Sonics independence or perseverance. Cool video man keep up the good work.

Im Autistic, but the reason why i love Sonic because as a kid i saw other kids who were also fans coming together and talk about it, plus i remember playing SA2 with my brothers and enjoyed it for the first time, also the music.
For example sonic mega collection, the extra menu music and my dad coming in my bedroom and listening to it with me.
I can actually agree with many points. Yes, I am autistic and Sonic is a character that's been cherished due to all those points given. Sonic serves as a way to keep that positive energy flowing and no matter what, keep on running and you'll reach your dreams.
I personally got into Sonic the hedgehog when I was 9 years old by watching full sonic X episodes on UA-cam and have been a fan since, however I didn't know i was autistic until I was 19 found out i have Asperger's syndrome so it's interesting to figure out stuff like this having a connection
Sonics been with me since I first touched a computer, he never went away during any phase or any low point in my life, the fandom making all these fan works further added onto this, and all these shows, comics, movies, games, etc, having lore that ranges from simplistic to deep, provides a complex multiverse of wonder, which, on top of the reasons you said, provides a lot of variety for an autistic person to delve in, from canons to fanons, and as I got older and understood life and myself better, Sonic has been relatable to me, I feel like Tails a lot, I’m a quirky guy who likes tech and chemistry, hahaha, but this makes me feel all the more in tune with myself, that and listening to Yes, good video, good channel, I wanna say you almost sound like an expert, having watched a couple of videos after this one.
I never really thought about why I loved Sonic. Hes a blue hedgehog that goes fast and is an adrenaline junky. Idk his personality is just really appealing. Also maybe it could be related to an autistic delight because Sonic is so free and autistic people may value that ideal of freedom of expression.
As an autistic person, I can now see what brought me to like Sonic in the first place. All the things you listed in this video make sense, and that's what led me to make my own Sonic OCs and world. I've enjoyed being a Sonic fan for these past few years, and I'm not going back anytime soon!

Back when I was in grade school I used to watch Sonic X every chance I got, for me at the time it was the best thing since chocolate chip cookies. The last arc kind of threw me off though I was like, "wait a minute, this didn't happen in the games."
@@Tostemacsame, I loved Sonic X, I was mesmerised with that iteration, with the voice cast, to the art style, to how the characters were, that was my ideal Sonic show, and I loved the metarex, as I got older, I would want to see it be the story for a Sonic Adventure 3, seeing as prior arcs had Adventure 1 and 2’s stories.

Dude, Sonic X was the best thing to wake up to every Saturday morning. It was so hype seeing dark sonic show up for the first time.
I remember seeing Dark Sonic for the first time, I was on the edge of my seat! You know things are about to get real when Eggman of all people is trying to give Sonic moral advice.
I've always had a sense of restriction because nobody liked the way i am. I was just trying to be somebody else and that just made me more miserable. A girl i knew taught me to just be just the way i like it to be, to be weird or unfunny for others but never for myself. I've been playing Sonic just recently, just to discover that he's not just the fastest thing alive, he's the freest too. Sonic doesn't run from the past, he runs to feel the wind and let things go their way, just giving his best, never anticipating a bad outcome, because he truly believes everything is going to be alright if he keeps running as fast as he can. Being yourself is just cool, and that's him. I'm still to discover if i'm autistic too, and it doesn't matter if i'm not. I'll still be me, just like Sonic.
Sonic The Hedgehog's fanbase having a HUGE autistic audience was never lost on me, but with this video contextualizing everything likable about Sonic The Hedgehog (as a whole, not just Sonic) through an autistic lens, I've come to realize that almost everything I love about Sonic is because I am autistic and idk, that revelation brought me so much comfort
i think another reason autistic people connect so strongly with sonic is the accessibility of the franchise. not always in gameplay options, but in the wide variety of ways you can experience the world.
sonic has spawned a multi-media franchise that even other big gaming icons like mario have never gotten. there's the games of course, but also tv shows, comics, movies, and even free official shorts to watch on youtube. i started out with the one of the cartoons, sonic boom, when i was a kid and didn't have access to the platforms a lot of the games were on. stuff like that is HUGE for a lot of folks, especially neurodivergent people.
the sonic community is insanely diverse because of this and, despite their poor reputation (sometimes deserved and sometimes not), its really easy to find other people like yourself there. i've met and seen lots of other neurodivergent people through sonic, and in a way that i've personally never been able to meet them before. the only other fanbases that are AS autistic as sonic are like, ducktales 2017 and certain parts of the mlp community.
This explains quite a few reasons why I love Sonic. I have aspergers and Sonic has (almost) always brought me joy. Yeah some negative emotions here and there, but my experience with Sonic overall has been positive. When I started playing Sonic Advance back in 2002 when I was 8, I was almost instantly hooked! Sonic has been my favorite franchise since like 2003 or 2004. And that love of the Sonic franchise never went away. And Shadow is indeed my favorite Sonic character (totally unpopular opinion, I know lol). Now of course I know not everyone who is a Sonic fan is autistic and not everyone who is autistic loves Sonic. But Sonic just has a special connection with many autistic people. Great video, btw!
I like the lore, it's not to complicated and isn't to important to understand the story. But still abundant and interesting enough to think about for years. Its what got me into it, and with the added characters, art, gameplay, and story. I can't ever leave

@@Tostemac I played Breath of the Wild on my Switch cause it was a super popular game. Then I saw some playstation/xbox only guy (Deebeegeek) play Breath of the Wild completely blind and he loved it so much that he went and played all the older 3D games. I enjoyed his Breath of the Wild series so much that I did the same thing. Plus I saw how well received the Ocarina of Time 3DS remake was and bought that a little after playing Breath of the Wild and played like half of it and finally restarted after a year. Plus Skyward Sword HD had a lot of hype so I wanted to get that and before I knew it I beat both and was moving onto Majora's Mask and knew I couldn't stop there and played the rest of the 3D games and some 2D ones too lol

I’ve only loosely touch the sonic franchise the metal virus ark in the comic books that I was. But what keeps me sticking around is the new designs they have for all the robots. I enjoyed frontier so much because of (you guessed it) the giant mechanical robots you had to fight lol.
Of course, there are people with autism who love Sonic. But I don't think Sonic is especially loved by autistics. This myth is born unfortunately due to people like Chris Chan, who happened to be autistic, but mainly he got attention for his antics and was a massive sonic fan.
I believe that Sonic is liked by a lot - autistics and not -, because is a character done right: cute, cool design, compelling personality, easy to look at, heroic, well recognizable from silhouette alone etc...
I know people who like Sonic and are autistics and people who like Sonic and are not.

I have always tried to stay on the outskirts of Sonic and never dive too deep in, because I knew for a fact I would be someone who would make a fan character and get way too involved. I didn't want to get suckered in. Well, then my partner introduced me to the Chao garden and it was too late...
I don't know what it is about the universe of Sonic, because Sonic is honestly one of my least favorite characters. But the world is bright and loud with good music, it's easy to digest, it's just simple. In a good way. And I also have a hard time believing half of the cast could be neurotypical.

Ey I have autism too lol and I pretty much been liking the Sonic Games even since. The flash games were also nostalgic and I loved them when I was in elementary school. It still has a special place in my heart!
I actually remember some of the Sonic flash games I used to play on new grounds back when I was still in high school/college. They were pretty fun and creative too.
I'm autistic too, and I LOVE Sonic and Mario! I just love the characters in both series and I always wish I could be like them. I'll never forget the time when I played my first Sonic game and Mario game being Sonic 3 and Knuckles, and Super Mario World a month later all those years ago!
For me, the important thing is Sonic himself. I don't even play the games much at all.
I have a brother who is part of the autism spectrum himself, and he's very interested in Sonic and Minecraft. I believe it has to do with how free you feel when playing those kinds of games, specially in Minecraft, where you can place anything almost everywhere at any time.

I knew I was different growing up compared to many of my peers. I never knew why I couldn't feel like I could connect with other people easily.
Sonic and his friends were always there to comfort me and help me feel like I matter in this world. The whole series is a breath of fresh air after a stressful day. The characters help me find qualities within myself that are admirable and also qualities that I can work on.
Overall, the series has been a source of comfort to me, and I honestly don't know how I would have moved on in life without it.

I'm not autistic, but I am a huge Sonic fan. I grew to love the franchise from the stories and characters that were in the games. They have so many layers to them and the characters have personalities that feel almost real. Sonic Adventure 2 was the first time I realized that video games can have amazing stories in them. It showed me the potential a video game can have as a story telling device. Shadow is my favorite character and I'm a proud (and a bit obsessed) Sonic fan.

I wasn't that heavy into sonic lore, but when I watched smbz I fell in love with the sonic cast of that fan series. I fear that I won't be able to enjoy the whole series before I die

Asperger's here; not a "fan" of Sonic, but always been aware of the character. About a decade ago, looked into the two main characters (Sonic and Robotnik) out of curiosity, and moved on. The stories are OKAY, but writing and voice acting are usually pretty bad (big fan of Unleashed and '06's stories, even if the dialogue was painful to listen to). Played the first three games, and they were pretty good. The music is always excellent, won't argue that. Environment usually isn't my favorite flavor, but it gets the job done. Haven't played any 3D games, but the 2D games handle beautifully. Lastly, Sonic, Robotnik, and Tails have decent designs, as do Knuckles and Shadow, for their roles in the games - but I think the series took the Mickey Mouse/Felix the Cat aesthetic too far, too many times. Not a fan of most of the designs for that reason.
What I find I DO enjoy is listening to fans of the series talk about what they love. It reminds me of the 90's (the BEST decade to be a kid, not gonna lie), which has plenty of nostalgia appeal. Enjoy what you enjoy - I enjoy listening to you enjoying it.

back in the 2000 since i was a kid i am in love the game until in 2003 of christmas i got a PS2 and sonic heroes but i never seen these new characters before but i love them all in sonic heroes
and my fave sonic character would be e-123 omega he is so awesome robot since i love transformers armada back in 2002 and now i will always play sonic games at anytime ^^
I dont really know if i have autism but i love sonic and dont really play that many other franchises. I know almost everything about the sonic lore. Also i loved all the small references in this video

@@Tostemac well in the egg memos Eggman calls him the god of destruction there aswell I don’t think sonic ever mentioned chaos but I know they said how chaos is a relative of the anicients from frontiers, the ancients mentioned in one of the rhea island cutscenes if all hope is lost they should retreat to the emerald that pulled the chaos emeralds to earth which was the master emerald and the end(big purple moon) found earth and threatened them and that’s why they are on angel island but they devolved into chao and then one chao evolved back into chaos to protect the master emerald.

Interstingly enough, my favorite character is Shadow The Hedgehog. I think it's because of his personality: very serious, productive, gets the job done without fooling around for a second. I, too, can be pro-productivity, and anti-wasting time, like Shadow. However, the difference between me and him is that I'm much less rude than he can be. I interact with people like how Sonic does, i.e., I'm friendly, polite, and I like to be positive.

My favorite Dub would be Japanese, because it has most serious stuff.
But I’m seriously love the franchise although I’ve been called “I have no proof, and I’m just a hater” but, I’m just anxious, some misunderstanding happens to me.
But I truly loved the series, and I started recoloring and making OC’s that are original to me. And gave credit to others.
But the OST is crazy cool!
Also off topic don’t criticize me seriously, when I’m alone or not alone in my room I like to hug my plush of Classic Amy to make myself not alone or hard on myself when I’m sleeping to make me feel less alone, and it’s completely wholesome, and I do admit I understand the canons. And their ships. But, I do despite enjoyed it. And glad it has most great games like Gens, Frontiers and Mania and etc and I’ll cherished and never forget it!

I always thought the answer to this question had more to do with Tails. Tails is the smartest character in the franchise. And he has a photographic memory, which is why people often theorize that he might have a form of Autism.

I'm a Sonic fan too and I have the suspicion that I'm autistic too. But what I wanna say is Pokémon and Sonic can shake hands with that. I also notice a lot of Pokémon fans (which I'm too) are autistic too

as someone who's autistic myself, I'd like to point out Megaman is also a good one too. it's got really good tracks, with a variety of vibes. It's got intricate, detailed and breathtaking atmosphere even when pixelated, I often feel sucked in by it. it's got plenty of characters to choose from and love: Your on the more energetic side? Megaman and Quickman are your guys. You like calm and relaxing characters? Protoman and Roll. How about direct characters, who are strong and get the job done? Bass and Zero. Maybe you like intelligent and interesting characters? well you have Thomas Light, Albert Wily and Time man. Do you like space themed stuff? Duo, Galaxyman and Astroman got you covered. heck you have your weapons, you have your robots, your transportation, animals and so much more! I'm surprised most don't bring up autistics with a special interest in Megaman.

Not sure if I'm on the spectrum or not, but I know I have a few Sonic songs in a playlist for really bad days. Singing along to Dreams of an Absolution or I'm Here gives me a chance to put things into perspective.
