Eric Eckhart Yeah he does. Mikael has written essentially all their material until the last three albums, however, where Fredrik helped with one or two guitar lines and fleshed out basic solo ideas. Mikael is the prog legend though.
That Guy: "I dont know anything about opeth" Me: Alright time to discover a brand new planet and create a whole new civilization of people who know what music is, goodbye earth
Tanikaze2 I probably was. Mikael's crowning achievement is being the third best singer in Bloodbath, not counting Blakkheim who is also better. I hope you don't lose sleep over that.
It's not just that he doesn't know anything about Opeth, it's that he's doing a review on an Opeth signature guitar and he chose not to educate himself to any credible degree on the band or the artist. It's a blatant disregard for the product and its origin and shows that they don't care to appeal to the people they're trying to sell this guitar to.
Oh Chappers you should really check out Opeth, one of the best bands at the moment. I saw them 6 times and they never get bored. Such a great band and Mikael is a cool guy aswell. I met him once, so if you have any chance to meet him.. go for it ;) and cool review :)
@RobChappers I was introduced to Opeth a year ago - They've litterally changed my life from the musical aspect. If you wanna hear more from them, I'd gladly recommend my favourite songs with them. So here goes ;) - Burden, Benighted, Heir Apparent, Hessian Peel, Windowpane, Porcelain Heart & Ghost of Perdition. I've probably forgot some, but those are my favourites - Check them out if you want to ;)
this vid doesnt do any justice for akerfeldt's guitar at all eventhough it s an SE serie it can do everything from clean jazzy sound to agressive saturated sounds, i just love that gfuitar
A young Lee Anderton and Chappers. Hope you get back to Andertons soon, after the Pandemic of course! Hasn't been the same over there the past few months without ya. Be safe man, the world needs more Chapman guitars!
Hey Chappers, do you prefer ebony fretboards or rosewood? I've never played an ebony fretboard and very interested in trying one out. Does the ebony have a different sound?
No, but Grover 406s are about $50 USD and drop-ins (you can even unscrew and swap the PRS heads withs theirs to keep them looking exactly the same), so there's no modifications and easy enough to do at home. A great Locking Set that doesn't get enough attention - I have them on 3 of my SEs.
I've played one of the Nick Catanese PRS's and thin would not be a word i would use to describe the neck. The neck on that guitar is thick just for the sake of being thick.
I actually want to find one of the 1st Generation Black & Red PRS SE Nick Catanese Signature Models - I prefer the thicker, full-on LP-esque Tremonti Custom-style body instead of the thinner Singlecut/Akerfeldt Singlecuts, the Mahogany/EMGs sound like a monster (although I might swap a set of passive pickups in it) and looks absolutely badass!
Me again, and I found one for a steal! The all-Mahogany body gives it a MASSIVE low-end, and has become my C-Standard Guitar. I've put a set of Planet Waves' Auto-Trim Locking Tuners on it, and eventually will install a set of Passive Pickups (thinking maybe EMGs "Het Set"?) but it's a *killer* Guitar that's goes for amazingly low prices on the Used Market.
I wish you would do a new, better and more serious review of this guitar because I was really interested in it. But it's apparently left the catalogue so you won't do it. For example of the few things you said and I wonder if the 2014 model was different. You said "wide thin neck" and "regular prs pickups" yet the prs site says "wide fat" and "se pickups".
And doing some research of Opeth would do honor to the guitar too. The demos were just silly and didn't bring up the versatility of the guitar at all, since Opeth has really cool sounds from side to side, extremes. And the sounds are good so the guitar (and amp, Laney VH or GH) should be very versatile.
Yuppi They were reviewing the guitar, not the band. Besides, it was over 4 years ago and they've improved their reviews and tests. This was more of a quickie to check out two new PRS SE Signature models.
Well considering they reviewed the guitar they had reaaaaaally little information and even those specs they got wrong. And they have re-reviewed some gear later to correct the original review. I find it a good enough reason when there is hardly any review and it contains errors. The point wasn't they should review the band but that the music of the band shows way more what you can achieve with the piece of gear. The main must buy specs weren't even mentioned.
I own the PRS SE M.Å and I bought it before seeing any reviews, I was handed it by another guitarist who knew I wanted a good guitar even though I had a low budget. I wasn't particularly fond of having a big logo on the body (I'm still not fond of having another bands logo on the guitar body but the guitar is so bloody good to play that I don't care that much anymore. Besides, I have friends who work as graphic designers that can cover it with something I want using transparent vinyl or similar with a print) but the guitar is a great instrument. Rob did mention that it was very versatile and described the variation of Opeth's music quite well ("witchy death metal to cool bluesy fusion stuff") to describe the guitar. It is a great guitar for the money, no question about it. I guess the SE-models weren't super-interesting for deeper reviews at the time. That has changed now that there are PRS SE Custom 24, SE Standard and a bunch of other guitars that brings PRS-love to guitarists on a budget that are nearly or just as good as a $10,000-$20,000 2014 Gibson LP in build quality.
+HAPPY WHALE thanks for the good read although I myself bought it like 7 months ago! :D have to agree it is good. To compare, mine at least has really thick neck, it's thicker than my friend's american strat. I liked the satin too but I wonder if fully sanded neck would be great too. It's the most versatile guitar I've had since the bridge pickup can go to really heavy metal distortion and neck pickup really gentle cleans. To add there, the tone control is the first one that's usable for me. It doesn't lack life the instant you tone it down and even close to 0 there's still change in tone (and the 0 is useful tone too, not muddy or anything). You didn't mention this so I wonder if it's a spec that changed during the lifetime but mine has push-pull switch on tone to tap the humbuckers to more single-coil sound. So you can play anything with it. I actually got this from Thomann, one of the biggest European retailer from Germany for 850€ (now roughly 1230 Canadian dollars, the euro prices are rough on American products...). It was already out of catalogue at PRS website but Thomann still had those new. The only complaint I can give to the guitar is the finish of fretboard. Around 17 to 24 it has some tiny chops in the ends and the binding looks like someone bit pieces off. When it comes to Korean luthiers, I trusted the World Musical Instruments since Chapman guitars, LTD, Schecter, Dean and bunch of others come there. And to top that, I read Mikael himself uses that exact SE, he wanted to make it so that it's affordable but artist quality :O
What you said about the zakk wylde EMGs is true of the Zakk wylde cry baby which is cheapest way of getting the phasal inducter thingy in it, as the non zakk pedal is about £30 more.
I have the Nick Catanese model and I wanted to put .11 gauge strings on it but i'm afraid that it might not fit because of what i've heard. If i do put them on i was wondering what i would have to do to stilll keep the action as low as i have it now but without buzzin which is what always happens to me..
trued the catanese model yesterday and its great! went to check out a peavey amp and tried it out with this guitar, and i enjoyed playin the guitar more than trying out the amp
The Zakk Wylde EMG set is not the same as the standard EMG 81 + 85 set. The EMG 81 is the same but the 85 is different in the Zakk set. The Zakk EMG 85 has a bluesy sound and is no were near as punishing or ear shattering as the standard 85.
Dude try this site, i was looking for the signature se as well and found this website just today, i did a few research as well in terms of the site being legit as well and found it is legit and also checked it on social medias such as youtube and facebook. This should be assuring enough for us i think lol. And yh just ordered it. Lets hope for the best it arrives just as it should lol.
AS A PHILADELPHIAN, I'M GOING TO SEND CHAPPERS THE ROCKY BOX SET FOR XMAS THIS YEAR, ESPECIALLY WITH A BOY ON THE WAY HE CAN SIT HIM DOWN OVER A WEEKEND WHEN HE'S OLDER AND TEACH HIM SOME LIFE LESSONS
@jedillama9 to be fair, they're never played on the radio, until Heritage they've been in the death metal genre .. nobody can be acquainted with all music types.
Haha, I knew you'd get a whole wave of comments demanding you listen to Opeth when I saw that in the video. To be fair, you should at least listen to Ghost Reveries.
guitar player that doesn't know opeth.... Im dying on the inside right now
***** Mikael is pretty well known as a "prog legend" of sorts, and Frederik is a solid player.
WybjornVR I'm pretty sure Frederik plays most of the lead guitar for Opeth
Eric Eckhart Yeah he does. Mikael has written essentially all their material until the last three albums, however, where Fredrik helped with one or two guitar lines and fleshed out basic solo ideas. Mikael is the prog legend though.
zack wakefield I'm a guitar player, I've known opeth for quite a while, but I don't like them that much. They're still ridiculously good musicians
*@ FMJman2*
You better educate yourself Mr.FMJman2/Yankee dumb head. You're missing important part of R&R/Metal history.
That Guy: "I dont know anything about opeth" Me: Alright time to discover a brand new planet and create a whole new civilization of people who know what music is, goodbye earth
Oh, lay off, they're not that good. Opeth isn't even the best thing Mikael's been involved in.
Sebastian Lacroix please god don't be referring to bloodbath
Tanikaze2 I probably was. Mikael's crowning achievement is being the third best singer in Bloodbath, not counting Blakkheim who is also better. I hope you don't lose sleep over that.
Ok... So I listened to Opeth, and they are great! Reminds me of a cross between "AIC Jar Of Flys" and the background music to Diablo = Epic Win \m/
Mikael Akerfeldt is a riff lord. some of the rhythm sections are more complicated than some peoples solos.
Mark tremonti.
that mikael arkelfedt Looks so Elegant and it sounds good :)
LOOOOOL none of those are actual Opeth riffs
Mikael Åkerfeldt FTW! If you are a metal fan you need to check Opeth out. His growls are divine.
Oh Chappers you should really check out Opeth, one of the best bands at the moment. I saw them 6 times and they never get bored. Such a great band and Mikael is a cool guy aswell. I met him once, so if you have any chance to meet him.. go for it ;) and cool review :)
love the Mikael Akerfeldt; so classy
@RobChappers
I was introduced to Opeth a year ago - They've litterally changed my life from the musical aspect.

I've played both of em and I love them both dearly.
9:33 describes using a clove hitch on your tuning posts. Never even thought of this before simply brilliant!
@RobChappers they don't really sound like AiC however they did do a brilliant cover of Would?, you should check it out if you haven't heard it.
I've been trying to find a Mikael Akerfeldt guitar for so long
Just got mine 2 days ago ! Better than I expected tho !
Dude where did you buy it?
Just at one of my local music store really bro hehe
How much did it cost you bro?
Bibash Rai bought it new for about Us $800
I'm thinking of buying the se mikael akerfeldt......how's the action on this thing?....will it be good for boosting my skills?....
I've played both. I like the Akerfeldt model. It sounds insanely awesome. I think it's cheaper too.
it's ok that some don't like them, but they should at least know who the band is!!!!
anyone know what kind of scale that is at 9:42? i don't think its just a minor pentatonic, btw chappers needs some rocky edjucation
that black and red 1 is BADASS!!!!! I WANT 1 RIGHT NOW
The Mikael Akerfeldt sig has a wide fat neck profile for those curious. Not wide thin.
i love my SE, but i don't really dig the new ones with the emg's... but the akerfeldt is intensely cool, i think it's their best new SE model
So those don't cone with locking tuners? Thanks - Cheers to the coolest guys of the best instrument store in the UK!

Opeth don't have gallops in their songs. Get your facts straight.
I really like the tone of that Marshall combo.

I thought the same, until I saw it and had to buy it! Great guitar!
These guys: Let’s review a guitar where we know anything about the artist.
Me: Clowns
I really like how they capture the basic sound of Opeth.
Would love an "update" to this, with the current 2013 Nick Catanese & Zach Myers models.
I wish you would do a new, better and more serious review of this guitar because I was really interested in it. But it's apparently left the catalogue so you won't do it. chappers and that one guy in the blue just totally dissed one of the most talented and diverse metal bands out there...*facepalm Opeth FTW!!!
The neck is Wide FAT, not wide thin. Look info at PRS's homepage...
Im so glad the new nick se doesn't look so bad.
The Nick Catanese signature loos awesome! Rot really a fan of Åkerfeldts though.
The Zakk Wylde EMG set is not the same as the standard EMG 81 + 85 set. The EMG 81 is the same but the 85 is different in the Zakk set. The Zakk EMG 85 has a bluesy sound and is no were near as punishing or ear shattering as the standard 85.
How do you do that squealing noise, its awesome,
Does anyone know where you Can buy the Mikael åkerfelt signature guitar. I have looked everywhere?
www.musicroom.com/se/id_no/01017792/details.html
Dude try this site, i was looking for the signature se as well and found this website just today, i did a few research as well in terms of the site being legit as well and found it is legit and also checked it on social medias such as youtube and facebook. @RobChappers Chappers played Diablo? Truly you are a king among men.
@Darfuria *i would say that he should listen to all their albums
@jedillama9 to be fair, they're never played on the radio, until Heritage they've been in the death metal genre .. nobody can be acquainted with all music types.
Hahahahaha, AWESOME look at the camera from the Monkey Lord at 7:35!!!
@RobChappers Opeth isn't like AIC at all :P. But yes, great.
It's Åkerfeldt ;-)

More importantly, they look so aqward sharing that chair. Can we get a couch??
@RobChappers Opeth officially kicks ass.

@Z7271227 Ha ha at least I'm honest ;-)
@dbsk8r92 I've heard that they go out of tune quite alot...which is the main reason i havnt bought this guitar already
Back when captain knew shit lol
@RobChappers "Nice Grippy Knobs"?? Hahahahha
It looks like a really cool guitar but that logo looks really grim
what a lack of respect!!! "i dont anything about opeth" WHAT!! are you serious?
@bladerunner900 That was my second guess.
Chappers shouldve done a few research and googling on Opeth before doing this video at least..
@dbsk8r92 tighten your tuners or check you're stringing properly..... i have the same guitar and it holds tuning like a rock
Haha, I knew you'd get a whole wave of comments demanding you listen to Opeth when I saw that in the video. To be fair, you should at least listen to Ghost Reveries.
"EYE OF THE TIGER" hahahhahah
Chappers knows not of Opeth OR Rocky. This saddens me.
Chappers listen to Opeth!!!!
the guy on tv translating all of it to deaf people ?
Don't know Opeth? Failsauce.
@suckit69er Listen to everything he says ;-)
Lars?
HAHA, the video in the background. anybody noticed?? :)
@Darfuria BLACKWATER PARK, DAMNATION, AND WATERSHED!!!
LOL, dude, i would say listen that he should listen to all their albums!!!
OPETH FTW!!!
rocky III all the way
just ordered from dv247 better price anyway!
@felippe750 its just the amp man \m/
@suckit69er Video something if you can. I love that guy.
