- The provision of Affordable Housing in our cities is central to delivering the UN Sustainable Development Goals and for people to continue to thrive in our cities through a period of urbanisation. The challenge is unprecedented. We are facing rapid and unplanned urbanisation, climate change together with an energy crisis and rising cost of living, migration, and the financialization of housing.
The first edition of the Norman Foster Foundation’s Public Debates on Cities: Affordable Housing took place Wednesday 16 November 2022 with the support of the Holcim Foundation for Sustainable Construction. It tackled the challenges and potential solutions to provide affordable housing in cities of different contexts globally.
With a five-minute keynote and debate between the following experts:
Peter van Assche, Founding Principal, bureau SLA, Amsterdam, the Netherlands; Chairman, Committee for Architectural Review and Monuments, Utrecht, the Netherlands
Tatiana Bilbao, Principal, Tatiana Bilbao Estudio, Ciudad de Mexico, Mexico
Jonathan Ledgard, Founder, Rossums Studio, Lausanne, Switzerland; Director, Afrotech Future Africa Initiative (Afrotech-EPFL), Ècole Polytchnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPLF), Lausanne, Switzerland
Stuart Smith, Director, Arup Germany, Berlin, Germany
Maria Vassilakou, Former Vice Mayor, Vienna, Austria
And ae conversation between the two Pritzker-recipients:
Alejandro Aravena, Executive Director, ELEMENTAL, Santiago, Chile; ELEMENTAL Copec Chair, Universidad Católica de Chile, Santiago, Chile
Norman Foster, President, Norman Foster Foundation
Great Question by Mr. Jonathan Ledgard about ownership in affordable housing. Was my main doubt of how this system works, who manages it, the developer or the government? Maria Vassilakou should have had a say about this question!
Great Debate! Long live Mr. Foster and his foundation!
My daughter is 20 years old. It is also the length of time that an alternative building approach has been put up publicly for our Trinidad and Tobago Carnival celebration. It (the vendors booth) was designed to tickle our perception of 'Shelter'...the approach uses prefabrated 'L' panels as a structural component....and allows incremental flexiblity of volume...(if challenged to do so). All the services to these temporary units are brought in at the time of it's use.

And thanks for sharing this on the web! Would love someday to visit the Norman Foster Foundation in Madrid.
Very insightful conversation 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Terimakasih banyak.
I'm looking forward to what is next after affordable ? It's true now that so called affordable is still not good enough, many, many people are still left without and with even less. Many more have to sacrifice way more now to have something so called affordable. What is our next major disruptor? #ubi now.
Simple and yet hard to implement due to private interest, make housing a depreciating asset like cars, like Japan.
