It’s good to see people like you who keep going out there. Nice filming, keep pointing the camera at pretty stuff and let us soak up the beauty 😊❤️❄️☃️
Thanks for posting these, your winter camping adventures. We get to live a bit vicariously through you in the peaceful, lonely, and very beautiful winter woodland without having to endure the relentless cold ;-) I don't mind the cold so much (I enjoy iceboating!), but I find it incredibly exhausting! So kudos to you (and coffee is your friend! lol)
Yes, after this trip I decided to embrace coffee and not go completely caffeine free. So now I am half-caf. Never heard of iceboating but I've seen some cool guys on Eel Pond doing ice sailing so maybe that is the same thing.
@@RachelWhelton yes, iceboating = ice sailing. Long days on the ice in high winds (as a result of sailing at 50mph), tons of fun :-). Half caf does the trick for me as well - but I literally drink more than a half gallon throughout the day. :P
Just found your channel, Rachel! So interesting and unpretentious. I’m about your age and widowed, and youngest children in college-I am about to have a bit more free time! I live on the southern coast of Maine and I love the White mountains and camping, though I’ve never braved winter camping, that’s my current interest. You’re inspiring me. I will continue to enjoy your videos!
this is just a suggestion you can cross your sled poles in an x pattern it will prevent your sled from tracking in different directions. thank you for posting these videos by the way
I finally got home to my house, snow on the ground and quiet day, snow showers and squirrel tracks all around. Im in my happy place- I understand your joy of winter!! 🥾🥾🐾🐾🥶❄️❄️
Ahh, good. I watch videos by Erik Nomark and he has very inspiring audio due to his fancy microphones. I hope to capture more nature audio this year. One of my goals! Glad you noticed it.
thanx for being there. remines of, home in rapid city black hills, college spearfish. south dakota. my last ski trip with friends from terry peak ski park lot to town over full moon. i broke ski tip half way down as coming around corner, downhill, a tractor had left ice chunks/blocks and packed ice chute i bounce back and fourth like pin ball. my sis in Canaan , and i worked dartmouth school and hospitial on visit 1999. i camped in prescott forest few months winter nursing nights . hidden camp i miss fave dayz...
I was on that trail Monday, finally trying out the snowshoes that I got for Christmas. I didn’t get all the way to the tent site since it was late and I was short on time but I enjoyed it once I started to get the hang of it and the trail was lovely and peaceful. Hats off to you for camping out in January, which is next level. You seem to have your gear and preparation nicely dialed in.
It's a great trail. Low risk as long as you don't go right up to the edge on the two river lookouts, which seem to be eroding into little cliffs. The trees on that trail are really beautiful.
It does offer a very nice sense of peace. I remember enjoying solo woods walks in winter growing up in Maine. Loved that one cloud shot you got where they were rolling and kind of pinkish.
Thanks! Yes, it is good to appreciate winter, preferably during winter. I feel like hibernating but it will be better to keep getting outside because before you know it, winter will change again.
Thanks! I actually have a list of certain shots to learn and slow motion snowfall has been on the list a long time. Sometimes I'm too tired to remember the artsy shots but I want to improve with that sort of thing.
I almost went here on Saturday, but my buddy talked me into car camping. Looking at your video makes me wish I had opted for here. Thanks for the video
Looked like only a couple sites had been used lately. This area and another one on the other side, number 12. That one had a lot of kindling and I maybe should have gone over there to get it! I wonder how this location is during summer all packed full of people. You should go have it to yourself before then.
I remember back In the 90’s those tent sites were on the other side of the river an which is now called the Lincoln Woods Trail…we called that trail the wilderness trail,,,,,,winter in the woods is so peaceful.
Hmnn, I find it so interesting how these campsites change around. And I heard there used to be a bridge going across. It's kind of funny how this campsite is on this side which seems to go nowhere except the wilderness. Maybe I need to go into that wilderness in the summer and check it out.
Yeah. Around my house we are starting to get some bird chirping action and that makes me very excited for spring and the return of seasonal birds. Good times lie ahead.
So impressed by your videos - the pics are amazing (especially the night sky photos). I am interested in getting back into photography. What camera do you use?
Swix Nordic glide wax for waxless skis. There weren't a lot of options at the store. It works very well unless you go into a stream then you have to re-apply. The ten dollar bottle lasts me a few years.
On these video comment sections, I see the range between people who think you don't need a bear can in winter to people who think I should carry bear spray every minute. So it's just a matter of personal decision making along the journey I guess. Part of the bear can carry for me is trying to follow the rules and the other part is my personal instinct of the overall easiest way to deal with the overall collection of possibilities. I've never seen a bear out there in winter or summer or fall or spring.
Right, I agree. But I had the pulk so I figured I'd throw on the bear bin. Next one I will not be bringing the can due to weight. There have been a few odd sitings of winter bears who should be hibernating so I keep a lookout for tracks.
@@RachelWhelton I didn't hear that about the winter bear sightings. I have been doing some hot tent camping in the White's this winter and cooking right in the tent counting on the bears being asleep lol. By the way..hot tenting is a lot of fun if you have never tried it!
Nice trip Rachel. What type of footwear do you use? Do your feet get cold? They don't seem very insulated. I sent you a pm, I guess you didn't respond because you were out in the woods!
These are Keen Evo boots. Not insulated nor expensive. But lightweight and comfortable and mostly waterproof. On day one my feet do not get cold. In the morning my boots are sometimes cold so I put "toe warmers" on my wool socks and that is very toasty. I did buy some fancy insulated boots but they are heavy so at the moment, not enticing. Maybe I need to "break them in." As for pm, I don't reallllly doooo that... I mean I don't even know where that is and I guess it's one of those things that makes me feel defensive, either because I am introverted or because I dislike personal inquiries (not saying yours is that - but in general).

Thanks 👍
"Field Mocha" - that's great! now there's a name for it! Super video, thanks
The name was given by a subscriber who commented in a recent video.
Beautiful footage, it looks so peaceful and inspiring.
It really is! Thanks for watching.
Winter in the mountains, whats not to love!

Yes, you make it sound so good. And it is. I think I have just been a little tired like an old bear.
I liked some of the audio in this video. The stream sounds were nice but the crackling fire was best. Brought back memories! Thanks.

Good to have the memories! That's one of the reasons I make videos, so I can look back on the trips.

Neat! you've really gotten the knack on that pulk. Your soundtracks/music are always so pleasant.
Ah, thanks! I pay for the music so it's nice to know it is adding to the quality of my vids.

Another great one Rachel. See you on the trails!
Thanks!
That looked like a fun trip. The slow motion snow was really awesome looking. Cheers from the other side of the country.

Nice winter trip!
While I like hiking in the winter, I too am thinking of spring/summer and the list of trails I have on hold for better weather.
Yeah. Around my house we are starting to get some bird chirping action and that makes me very excited for spring and the return of seasonal birds. Good times lie ahead.
So impressed by your videos - the pics are amazing (especially the night sky photos). I am interested in getting back into photography. What camera do you use?
It is a Sony A7iv. It is much better than my previous cameras, which I sold off or gave to my teenager when I got the Sony.
Another great video Rachel! What kind of wax do you use? I haven't tried it on mine yet and yours looks really easy to apply. Does it work well?
Swix Nordic glide wax for waxless skis. There weren't a lot of options at the store. It works very well unless you go into a stream then you have to re-apply. The ten dollar bottle lasts me a few years.
Bear can in the winter🤔 Never seen a black bear out in winter…we are not that far apart

Was this Monday-Tuesday? Took off from Lincoln woods early Tuesday morning and there was one car there. Maybe you?
Yeah, Monday-Tuesday. Silver car. I like parking there because it feels like the rangers will see our cars frequently.
@@RachelWheltonVery cool! Glad you enjoyed your camp👍
Probably don't have to worry to much about bears out there this time of year.
