The tragedy of May 31, 1970 called for world solidarity and reconstruction during the government of Juan Velasco Alvarado.
The province was created by the Law of October 28, 1904, in the government of President José Pardo y Barreda, with its homonymous capital, along with the third of the Province of Huaylas, by division of the second province of the same name of Huaylas.

Me gustaría conocer conozco la historia desde muy niño mi abuela vivió allí meses antes de que hubiera el desastre, me contó que unos turistas vieron los nevados y dijeron esta ciudad está en peligro. Pero no era algo nuevo los mismos pobladores hablaban de eso.
