In 2013 the Falkland Islands held a referendum on their sovereignty. The Islanders were asked whether or not they supported the continuation of their status as an Overseas Territory as part of the United Kingdom and 99.8% voted to remain a British territory, with only three votes against.

When Britain claimed the Falklands the country of Argentina did not exist, that land was a Spanish colony. After Argentina gained independence and became country they laid claim to the Falklands simply due to it's proximity. There was British people living on those islands before Argentina was a country.

I just want to correct a mistake they made. The Americans didn’t give “permission” to use Assention island as a base as it’s already British territory. The UK lets the US have a base there too!

It was the choice of the people btw but Argentina didn’t care what the people of the island wanted so they kept pushing the British government to do something then obviously war started

The Argentines claim the British threw them of the island in 1833. This is false. The British threw the Argentine military off the Island. (Many if not most were British mercenaries anyway) two civilan couples chose to leave with them. (There names are on record). Their own naval records support this as an Argentine Naval vessel was in port at the time.
Other Islanders were considering leaving because they were owed a lot of money by the Argentine governor who was in Argentina. The British paid them in silver to encourage them to stay. (They wanted a viable communty on the island)
Note the the Spanish HAD thrown ALL the British civilans off the Islands in the 1700's Few had returned due to the initimidation.

We can claim the islands to be British because we were the 2nd ever to step foot on the islands and claim them as ours 100’s of years before Argentina was even a country and if the islands aren’t British there French because they got on the island 1 year before the British so it’s a British or French island no matter what we aren’t giving it to Argentina a place that wasn’t even a country when we discovered the islands

Actually, British captain John Strong was the first to discover and land on the Falkland Islands in 1690, not the French.

The people who live on the Falklands are British and they wish to remain British. The Americans count Hawaiians living on their islands as American.

The Falkland Islands are classed as a British overseas territory. Therefore, the land actually belongs to the reigning monarch. Therefore any attack upon that land is an attack on british sovereignty so the British military are duty bound to fight to defend/regain that land for the monarchy.
Also all those people that live on the Falkland Islands are British subjects. Relatives of the origibal settlers and they hold British passports. They have helf numerous referendums as to who they wish to be goverened by and every time the result has been 95% + in favour of the continuation of British governance.

They are important islands because of their position.
It’s very difficult to sail from either side of South America. Without sail near the islands and being detected by the British. 😉

In addition to the below comments, International Waters start 200 miles off a country's coastline and The Falklands are 450 miles from the nearest piece of Argentine coastline, ergo they are well within International Waters.

As history has proven wars can be started for political reasons. The ruler in Argentina at the time was a General Galtieri and his dictatorial government killed many of its own people and was suffering very high inflation with riots in the streets. Fighting a war [popular in this case] gives the people something more serious to think about which eases civil unrest. The incompetent British politicians sent the wrong idea by withdrawing a British protection ship. The fact that 99% of the population of the Falklands voted to stay British did not sway a dictator and that is the continuing problem in that the British government would need to force the people of the Falklands to move in order to satisfy Argentina . The Falklands are better protected and any government that wanted to stay in power would have to send re enforcements to back up the forces already in the Falklands though this time the British have even more in the way of technical superiority so a war is unlikely in the near future.
