    The waterjet marks on the outer profile is basically MKC version of "thick for toughness "
    They gaslight the community into thinking it's "rustic" when it's just lazy.
    I will bet anyone any amount of money they have $40 all cost into that knife and sheath and they won't spend the time and cost to finish the profile because they don't have anyone skilled enough to do it and /or they don't wanna pay the cost to have the blanks cut oversized then milled or ground down to fit the scales.
    The scales are most likely milled to an exact dimensions so they will line up with the profile of the blade
    the only think human hands touch is putting scales on and sharpening.

      I have a mkc speedgoat in magnacut and 52100 and a mini speedgiat in 52100. When Josh co owner was talk about steel being to hard to sharpen at high hrc it was before they offer any knives in magnacut. When they started mkc inky had knives in 52100 and talk about how it was stronger and easier to sharpen in field or touch it up on a strop or ceramic rod so nit so good marketing now that they have magnacut heard they get knife blanks in cut to shape and size and heat treated already they are just put treat pakarized on 52100 or cerakote and mirror polished or cerakote on magnacut. While I like how thin thee knives are mine are cord wrapped lightweight hunting knives I like them they work well and have lifetime replacement and sharpen through them so like benchmade but without have to pay for blade replacement I see value if you break your knives you get a new one so that good, but you are paying through noise up front for a knife in 52100 it cost same as magnacut which is crazy to me. Love there knives fir being lightweight .10 at edge and .90 at spine they work well as a hunting knife but yea they do feel over price. When I bought mine 3 and 2 years ago I thought they were doing everything in house grind down cut out heat treating when i found out on one of there podcast that all they do is treat steel and grind an edge on them kind of was disappointed there still usa made which is good but they are just like every other knife company to me they don’t make knives they assemble a knife in my option. I will be supporting northern knives and others like Levi who do everything in house start to finish for nit much more money. I would still like to see you test there knives they seem to sharpen well I don’t have any “bur” lol issue they all sharpen and take a good edge and work well like to your option on heat treat on them and see what your getting other than machine marks, another note is 52100 steel knives from them have smooth no marks on spine but all magnacut knives have rough spines they was weird to me their 52100 knives seem alot better finished than knives done in magnacut.

  • @NeevesKnives
    @NeevesKnives 8 днів тому +6

    My guess is just old way of thinking or outdated knowledge, I'm sure at one point steels over 63 were difficult to sharpen before we learned about abrasives. However once we learned abrasives matter we learned that the high hardness steels not only sharpen easier with proper heat treatment but de burr like 10× easier leading to a much much sharper edges that last way longer and is easily honed and stropped back.

    • @ericasedc
      @ericasedc  8 днів тому +5

      I guess because he’s not that old, I figure he may know better. For some reason this particular marketing tactic targets his aimed demographic in the way he expects them to accept it best. He is aiming for hunters and avid outdoorsmen. They would be the ones with the outdated and uneducated thoughts on knives. I believe Josh may know better though.

    Thank you for the review Erica, I ordered a MKC Blackfoot 2.0 in Magnacut last year. It had the same tooling marks all down the spine of the knife top and bottom side. It also still had the burr attached so it would not cut the construction paper they sent out with the packaging. I have seen some less expensive knives sent out this way, for the premium price they charge they should hire a quality control team member. I was expecting to recieve a knife that would cut paper. Josh and the Team seem like a great bunch of guys. Hopefully they can put a nicer finish on their blades coming out today.

You can look at the badger or dart or even a bravo one or bushcrafter and see the immense difference in quality and production. I’m so sick of hearing the hardness makes for chippy steel. I use a lw manix maxamet or many others in k390 everyday very hard and have for years and have never experienced that, it’s one of those things people just regurgitate. I emailed them and said they could sell more knives to the average person and their response was, they put a lot of time and effort into R and D. I gotta say. The price seems reasonable for large 62HRC MagnaCut blanks for as thick as they are, and I don't fault them for 'only' treating to 62 as Larrin mentions quenching thicker MagnaCut blades above the 62 Rockwell sweet spot can be tricky as the slower cool time compared his test coupons potentially results in excessive austenite (less corrosion resistance). The AK4.5 MagnaCut blank is $134 when it's in stock, which seems reasonable for a blade that accepts readily available ESEE scales.

They have that toothy-ness like Benchmade but better I think. I also remember when that video came out and thinking it was incorrect about the burr, as well as the marks on the spine. I have had some pretty bad ones with that. I even put it in a review. I said something along the lines of “It doesn’t bother me a ton especially because I can fix it with my work sharp, but others will want to see better finishing on their blades they are paying for.” To me, they are like my Emerson’s. Some rough finish markings and expensive but they do a job and do it well from my experience. I will for sure have the same criticisms for both companies until they are fixed. But I still love them and they work well for me in my experience. I think a lot of what they do is a step in the right direction to the folks that don’t know much about cutlery aside from their grandpas Buck or a Havalon/outdoor edge. That being said, I want to see them grow and IMPROVE because that’s what matters!
    Ps. I let my buddy who is a butcher use my stonewall to process all the deer everyone brought in during season and he put over 18 deer on without sharpening it aside from using rods to touch up. He said it was a favorite for others to use as well. Rest assured, they work! If you have any questions on them feel free to ask me because I’ve sharpened many of them too! If you’re into custom handmade knives then obviously buying knives from a startup trying to re-establish manufacturing in America aren’t going to suit you. We all want American manufacturing to come back, but then are cut throat with our judgement as the companies are trying to start, stay in the green, move 1000mph, and provide quality enough products. These guys are marketing to hunters and outdoorsman… not knife enthusiasts. The people they are marketing to know nothing so getting magnacut edge retention feels like Rex 121 on steroids to them. They do a good job on their heat treat and edge geometry and at the end of the day that’s what matters. You can sharpen an imperfect factory edge. Working knives for working people. Not show pieces for collectors and testers. I’m sure if they made their videos 30mins long and bored the shit out of people who don’t give af in the first place, they’d lose much of their market. They’re trying to introduce people who think a buck 110 in 420HC is the holy grail of knives into slightly higher quality stuff. Can’t jump from that to Rex 121 level stuff with them. Look at his podcast on the meat eaters talking to all those guys how to sharpen. They literally know nothing and don’t give af. They were literally getting bored with his 5 minute schpeel during the podcast. So yea they are trying to be really dumb and selective with what they say. Obviously nothing you said is wrong or false, but I think just nit picking a company trying to be an American manufacturing power house for stuff that is not even anywhere close to their goal in the first place.

      @@mickdorton1653 like I said nothing she said was wrong. I just think this is the wrong group reviewing and commenting on the wrong knife. Relative to the knives their target market have been using, these knives are actually like the 2nd coming of christ. And they get the 2 most important factors right. Heat treatment and edge geometry. I am almost positive I’ve seen a video where they talk about the tooling marks being slightly grippier than full polish. So whatever you think about a knife needing to look perfect, they seem to think there’s a working function to it. So not really sure you can classify that as QC. Like everybody, finding good work is hard at the moment and I’m sure they’re going through the ringer trying to find and vet good sharpeners especially with how fast they are growing. But regardless, there is a huge camp in the knife community that likes to put their own edge on factory knives anyway. And whether spyderco, or bench made, or whoever… the typical understanding seems to be mass produced knives typically need a good sharpening or 2. But people don’t gripe about it to hard as long as heat treat and overall geometry are fine. So kind of not useful to nit pick a mass produced factory edge. Especially with a sample size of 1. I’m sure most followers here are knife enthusiast purist and there’s a very small representation of MKC’s target market so I wouldn’t use this comment section as an unbiased poll of “so many people get bad factory edges from them” they have a Facebook fan page of ≈ 10k and everyone seems to be happy there. All day everyday people posting pictures of processing animals. Just happy to vote with their dollars for American manufacturing. The owner of the company is actually a blade smith and hunter. If you truly want something special and perfect with a story behind it, go support your small local guy. Nothing wrong with that. But in the land of coca-cola and Doritos and Budweiser and Super Bowl commercials, there is a huge market for MKC’s style. Nothing wrong with that. Not everybody wants to put a custom order in with Johnny the custom knife maker 2 hours away that has 323 followers on IG that’ll take 3 months to get to them. There’s nothing wrong with that.

    I've followed them since the beginning and even considered working for them, but I think they are quickly building a name brand large enough to simply sell to investors. Honestly, I'd wait three years before buying another MKC knife to see how they evolve as a company. Boom or Bust
