    Born and raised in Alaska and have been hearing this story for years. Loved it as a kid and I still love it. A point though, every time I have heard this story or the other iterations of it, it always ends with story teller saying something to the effect of " And that is why, to this day, whenever we see Brother Raven we thank him for the gifts of the Moon, the Stars and especially The Gift of The Sun."
    Just sounded unfinished to me without the last bit. And yes, I thank pretty much every Raven I see. I also bow my head when people say Grace over a meal and take my shoes off before entering a Buddhist temple. You don't have to be religious to have revenants.

    Yes...here in the Pacific Northwest, we STILL say a thanks when we see the sun...the rain stops.

    I've heard a different version of the story. The Raven becomes a seed floating in the water, which is drunk by the girl. She then gives birth to a son who won't stop crying in the darkness. Only when grandfather brings out the glowing orb or 'ball of light' will the baby stop crying. When the baby/Raven touches the orb, he transforms back into his winged form and flies out with it.

      I've heard the same as you; That raven became a seed and was drank by the girl - But do remember that each Nation (and there are many) on the NorthWest Coast of North America. Have a different tale and creation story on how the raven stole the light. It has the same elements: Raven, An old man, his daughter and the Light. However it is obtained, the elements are the same. The light exists.

    The story of Raven stealing light is much like the Greek myth of Prometheus stealing fire, except that Prometheus gets punished in the end.

      Myths are what people created to try to understand nature. But then God revealed Himself to Abraham, so we now have The Bible instead of myths. Jesus was a real person, the 2nd person of the Trinity and He was born of a virgin (God can do anything, He is The Creator). He was innocent and was crucified for you and me. To ignore Him is to deny what He did. The world is in chaos because people are back to mythologies. ♥️🙏🏼☦️

      There's something strangely powerful about it, isn't there? Kind of like the Old Ones but, y'know, a bird. And part of an actual cultural tradition.

    Thought at the end, she'd say "Raven" in a Scottish accent, do a twirl and cover her head with a black feathery robe, and turn into a mid-flight raven.

    Here's just as viable a creation myth as any other, since no one has any clue what the real story is.

    I'm a little disturbed by the ending of this story, does that mean the father had sexual relations with his daughter after he saw her?

    • @johnathanmartin1504
      @johnathanmartin1504 5 років тому +2

      Not at all. He didn't want there to be light because he was afraid she would be ugly and he would feel guilty about that (not being much of a looker himself). He was relieved that his fears were unfounded.

    Question: if we by some means eliminate the Sun from its existence, will light still exist in the universe/cosmos - or in other words, are other stars emitting the same thing that we know as light?

    …Actually, it seems that raven has a very firm foothold as the image of pensive gloom, uncertainty and premonition (worrying?..) in different cultures throughout the history. For example, in Russian folk singing “Black Raven” is / has one of the most doomed ponderings subject lines complimented with the melody, which is a very far cry (cawing) from being jovial… In the political history of the USSR, during the purges - repressions of the 1930s, the vehicles in which they (reportedly) arrived at night to arrest innocent people were called as “voronok” (in Russian language: «воронок»), which can be translated as the “funnel” (or as the boisterous young male crow), but semantically and audibly has very pronounced connotation with the word “voronyonok - voronok”, which would stand for “little crow”.

      I find it interesting how different it is among Native American cultures. Raven has always been the clever one, the ultimate "magnificent bastard" so to speak. He's always seen as good, but mischevious. I think a lot of it is because we (natives) identify more with the animal itself and therefore look more at it's behavior than what it looks like (dark feathered) or eats (dead things). Golanu in the Tsalagi (Cherokee) language means both "raven" and "greatest warrior".

    Ugh, not all creation stories begin with light. Both factually and logically incorrect (If the sun is a god, as it is in some ancient cultures, then it wouldn't need to "create" light).

    My only objection is we Haida are NOT American. I should know. I am one. We are Indigenous Canadians. We Canadians are so tired of being lumped in with the USA. We are a seperate, entirely different nation from the south of us. I'm sure if I constantly referred to the UK,not as the UK, but as Europe it wouldn't bode well. Same here. We are proud of our indigenous past. Stop referring to us as America! Just stop. Even North Americans is preferable!

      America is a continent, not a country. The United States of America is a country. The lady refers correctly to the American native people pointing to Northeastcoast America as she has previously geographically set it to North America, now a days comprised by different countries like Canada, USA, Mexico down to Panama, plus all Caribean Islands.

    Stories about the Raven are the cultural property of the clans and nations of the Pacific Northwest. Unless permission was given by tribal leaders, it's definitely not okay tell Raven stories that are owned by another clan.

    • @jbZahl
      @jbZahl 6 років тому +16

      I've never heard of cultural property extended to a story or a myth. I always thought cultural property can, by definition, only be a physical item a culture has produced (Buildings, works of art, etc.)
      I'm interested and to be honest a bit concerned where the idea of intellectual property for myths and oral traditions comes from. Can you elaborate or provide me with links or other sources to read up on this?
      For you it seems quite clear that this is wrong, but I honestly can't see why, how and whom one should ask for permission to tell or summarize myths from other cultures.

      No, I’ve definitely heard of some tribal cultures being very protective of their particular tribe’s stories or myths. Unfortunately I can’t find where I read that, and will therefore continue collecting cultural knowledge without explicit legal permission.
