House of the Dragon Season 1 Review

- House of the Dragon is now streaming on HBO Max. Review by Helen O'Hara.
Early on it sometimes felt too faithful to its predecessor, but after ten episodes House Of The Dragon has forged its own identity and established itself as a worthy prequel to Game Of Thrones. That’s largely thanks to strong writing, a wildly overqualified cast, and a veritable flock of dragons. More of the same next time, but a little more confidence too. They’ve earned it.
Paddy Considine as King Viserys is just outstanding, even GRRM admits that the show version of Viserys is better than his own, Paddy definitely deserves an emmy next year.
Daemon was like a perfect Targyrean version of Jamie crossed with some of Rhaegar.
How was he in anyway like Rhaegar?
Daemon was a scamming and ruthless but a man who cares about his family

Yeah it’s 9. Loses a point for some pacing issues in the middle but it sets up the dance perfectly in the end. The casting and acting is 10/10.

It's IGN. They give she-hulk something above 4 and rings of power something above 6. They're not reliable in giving scores to series. Let's see what they do for Andor.

Was a solid first season and sets up season 2 perfectly
During the wedding announcement in the Crowd He states that the Color worn by the Hightowers when the go to war is Green. They established the significance of the colors early on in the season.
House of the Dragon definitely beats The Rings of Power...
The last Jedi was better than The Rings of Power, that's saying something.
The whole franchise of The rings of powers and Star Wars has plummeted

This show certainly delivered and it just shows GRRM was right. After all the complaining it’s still was best to not start the show at start of the Dance, but introduce the characters first involved. Season 2 will certainly have a much faster pace and feel more like the older GOT.
Aemond is so much more of a 2D anime psycho villain in the book lol

I’ve watched that scene of Daemon beheading Vaemond hundreds of times.
its not easy to bring book characters to life and make them more interesting than they are in the books. masterpiece in every way.
They're far less interesting in the show. Far less.
It was an easy 10/10
The first season was some of the best character-driven drama ive seen in a show. So much subtlety and nuance in not only the characters themselves but particularly in their relationships with others. There were so many multi-dimensional personalities built carefully throughout the season - all sold by great writing and great acting!
If HOTD was a 9 for IGN, then Rings of Power should've been either 6 or 7.
Rop is a 5 or a 6..
Rings of Power without the massive budget is a CW level show at best.

What a season! Very, very impressed!
For a show that often paints of itself in a cynical light, it had a surprising amount of heart.
The only thing that "irked" me was the huge time jumps and re casting. For me the show was strongest when they stuck in more or less the time area.
Yeah that was a little abrasive, but I'll give them a pass on that one. Let's see what the rest of the show looks like.
What? How can be 9 if doesn't come even close to Game of Thrones first season?... Should be a solid 7, or 8 if you wanna support by hope of a better future. As much as I'm a huge fan it didn't get close to the starting masterpiece that was the writing of GoT
Got has too many useless sideplots. 7 means average and 8 is above average according to IGN ratings.

It does flesh out the dragons and riders. You can see that the riders believe they are the masters. However, as evident in the final episode, the dragons are the masters and the riders are more like their dogs.
It was an awesome first season. What a show.

This show has been establishing itself very slowly and despite some of the hiccups throughout; it proves itself a meticulously and strong built Cinema Experience.

8.5/10 very similar to the audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Biggest issues were the time jumps that some episodes felt rushed with no context. And some false characterizations.
False characterization? The time jumps were needed to get to the point, where the real conflict happens.

False Characterization? All characters were consistent and had clear reasoning for doing what they did. And the time jumps, as weird as they could be, were after a big choice of event was made, and to show how that it carried through months/years after.
They also included scenes that were unnecessary
This season was 90% boring and 10% visible.

Really hope they up the brightness levels next season, especially in HDR. Could barely watch some of the darker scenes in a few episodes!

Boring. Characters are not interesting or make me feel for them. Oh they offed another character, shrug who cares. Time jumps of decades. Different actors for the aged characters everything feels disjointed.
