This is about the cries of thousands of windows and mothers who saw their husbands and children die at sea. Portugal being for most of it's history stuck between a rival nation and the immensity of an unknown ocean forced uncountable generations to turn their eyes at the sea. Either as fisherman or as crew members exploring the new worlds, rivers of tears helped filled that very same Atlantic as well as the cries of all those women made those shores that much windy. The pain of loss and sorrow the sea caused us is still present in many art forms. This video represented this very well. The foggy aspect brings us back to a past we want to forget but still make sure to remember. Dulce throwing flowers from a cliff to that immense grave made of water. The old window dress in black crying and all those rugged masculine faces heading to sea knowing only that it will be their time to perish sooner or later. A precious moment in Portuguese music.

I will tell you the story of how this song was chosen for the theme of this film. One day Richard Gere was passing by on a street and heard the sound of the song coming out of a store. He stopped, continued listening, retreated to the store, went in, and asked at the counter, who was the singer who was singing the song and the name of the song. He took note, thanked and left.
By this time, Richard Gere would be ready to play the main character of the film "Primal Fear" and he liked the song so much that he convinced the producer to put the song as the musical theme of the film. And it didn't stop there, because in a scene in the film and the purpose of the song, something similar happens to what happened to him when he listened to the song while walking on a street. And a scene in which he is listening to the song and talking to another character, who expressed satisfaction with the song and the conversation continued without Richard Gere giving an answer.
When the character was leaving the house, Richard Gere called him and offered him the CD by Dulce Pontes that has this song. In other words, Richard Gere was hooked with Dulce Pontes, who not only put the song in the film and also advertised the CD. There, this is the story of how the Song of the Sea was the subject of the film with actor Richard Gere as the protagonist.

And the beauty of Portuguese people is that it is okay for men to be emotional. I am Portuguese but live in Holland. What a contrast, where emotions are deeply hidden and men certainly don't show emotions. It is seen as weakness in Holland, where I see the strength of people to be emotional and overcome loss and sadness. Me and my dad always cried together listening to fado. I miss my country and will be back in some years.

As you say that you didn't understand what Dulce Pontes sing, I'll leave you guys this song lyrics translated so when you ear this song once again you might enjoy it as much as the portuguese do.
Canção do Mar - Sea Song
    Fui bailar no meu batel
I went dancing in my boat
    Além do mar cruel
    beyond the cruel sea
    E o mar bramindo
    And the sea roaring
    Diz que eu fui roubar
    Says I went to steal
    A luz sem par
    the peerless light
    Do teu olhar tão lindo
    from your look so beautiful
Vem saber se o mar terá razão
Come to know if the sea will be right
Vem cá ver bailar meu coração
Come here to see my heart dance
Se eu bailar no meu batel
If I dance in my boat
    Não vou ao mar cruel
I don't go to cruel sea
E nem lhe digo aonde eu fui cantar
And I don't even tell you where I went to sing
    Sorrir, bailar, viver, sonhar contigo
smile, dance, live, dream of you
Vem saber se o mar terá razão
Come to know if the sea will be right
Vem cá ver bailar meu coração
Come here to see my heart dance
Se eu bailar no meu batel
If I dance in my boat
    Não vou ao mar cruel
I don't go to cruel sea
E nem lhe digo aonde eu fui cantar
And I don't even tell you where I went to sing
    Sorrir, bailar, viver, sonhar contigo

Just to give a little insight when you say "sounds arabian...". Before they became 2 individual countries, Portugal and Spain were one single territory, dominated by the muslims arabes from North Africa and sorroundings; also, the gypsies from Eastern Europe were traveling and expanding. Slowly, spanish and portuguese started to fight and conquer their lands and expelled the arabs. In France, the gipsy musical tradition originated the jazz type "guitar manouche". In Spain, this misture musical culture gave birth to Flamenco and in Portugal, it developed becoming Fado. In fact, both Flamenco and Fado share a lot of chord progressions and scales; and the arabe influence on both, its quite notorious.

The Amazigh genetics are still very high in Portugal, Arab(yes, there actually were many Levantines who moved and settled and stayed after conversions) Phoenician and Sephardic Jewish. Religious propaganda and sentiment lead outsiders to believe the North Africans, arabs, Jews were expelled but its not true, many converted or practiced their religion in secret.

Hihi, Arabian :) Spain and Portugal were occupied by Arabs for some time, Portuguese in the end kicked them out. Spain needed our help ;) So probably you hear influences in this song, but this is Fado. Portuguese folk song. It is about loss, grieve and Fado you really have to feel in your heart. Every live performance is different, is it comes straight out of the heart. It means indeed song about the sea. Portugal lives from the sea. They were discovering the word over the sea. The sea is magical, cruel, mesmerism, scaring, generous and greedy at the same time. She gives a lot of her treasures, but takes the lives of many fishermen. This is live....you will hear every performance is different. Thanks you for the reaction! Fado deserves more attention, it is beautiful soul music.

Fado is portuguese imaterial heritage song style protected by Unesco.
It is mostly about the nostalgia of missing something you have lost but at the same time a celebration for having it in the first place.
This one is about all that the Sea gave us as sailing people but at the same time all the lives the sea took in this “dance with the sea”
This song is all about that portuguese people melancholic soul, like Argentinians have tango and Spanish flamengo or USA have the blues.
It is all about missing your homeland and your people and she got very emotional because this was the ending of a world wide tour that kept her away for months and months.
You should also check Marisa, another Fado Diva.

If you guys haven't seen her live version of this titled "Canção do Mar - Dulce Pontes (2005)" where she's on stage wearing the red top, orange skirt, and black scarf thing... It is SOOO much better than this, she just sings with her whole body and soul and it's.... SO GOOD. Love your channel, and subscribed 😊 But you should really really watch that, it's like 10 times the emotion, it's phenomenal. Cheers!

Just as a curious fact, but this song is featured in Primal Fear, great movie with Richard Gere and Edward Norton. I think there is even a story on how that came to be, since the scene where you can listen to it is very unrelated to the track itself.

you are correct! the song itself is about the sea. she is one of the portuguese powerhouses but she has one more song that is her most amazing: it's called "Amor a Portugal!" her best performance is in Athens (Greece) and once you are done look for the major powerhouse voice in Portugal : Marisa. thank you both for letting others know about Portugal. latest song is Carminho! second powerhouse in Portugal current days!

Ah, wonderful. Trip down memory lane. Her voice cuts through your soul. Been a while since we listened to her album 'O primeiro canto', which was one of our favourites and in our car CD loader for quite a few years until the kids demanded more kiddy like stuff ... like Sesamestreet sing-a-longs. :)

I died at the Newfie comment 🤣 As one of the many descendants of the Portuguese diaspora in Canada it made me laugh.
Also, the connection isn't farfetched. There's evidence of precolonial contact in what is now Newfoundland. Cod is a staple of Portuguese cuisine and yet it was never caught off Portuguese shores. Sailors and fishermen started salting the cod on board the ships, to preserve it so it could make it back to land hundreds of years ago. A tradition that is still alive and well today. Thanks for the video ❤

there's some arabian influence in portuguese culture. there weren't only celts and romans in the peninsula back in the day, there were also moors for a long time.
