Today I want to talk about mental health, things I do to make things easier, the push that gets you over the final line, and just feeling good about yourself.
When I first started working in the music industry, it became really apparent that it wasn’t going to be easy after about a year. I made very little money as an assistant engineer, I spent 60 hour weeks working for very little money. I cancelled out a lot of things in my life for the sake of this career. Looking back, I would have changed little things, but those little things I would have changed, would have made a big impact in making sure I kept myself healthy.
Let’s focus a little bit on what people feel when being creative. As a producer/mixer, etc., I am inspired to create and when it goes really well, you are able to obtain some kind of feeling that you can’t even describe in words, and it’s incredibly addictive.
You have to remember to let yourself breathe, you have to let yourself take a moment, take time off. Give yourself other hobbies outside of that creative field. The biggest thing for me was finding something else that I was passionate about, that made me feeling the same as playing the guitar, piano, mixing & creating music. This is important because you can’t bet it all on that. As a creative person, there have been times in my life when things didn’t go where I wanted them to go. The people I was working with didn’t do the things I was hoping they were going to do, and sometimes it can be devastating. Sometimes you can have a lot of those and it snowballs into something bigger.
A lot of people talk about how obsessive and passionate you become and then when you fail, it feels like your heart was broken because you put everything into it. I’ve been there, and the only thing I knew I could do was get back on the horse again and focus, because that is what I liked doing. You want to keep striving and keep working, but you also need to give yourself time to rest. Give yourself a weekend away from your guitar, from mixing, from playing with your band. You will find that having that second hobby or second passion will let you breathe in to new life and it will show and reflect in what you do. You have your entire life ahead of you, you don’t have to arrive at the finish line tomorrow.
If you are struggling, there are organizations that are there to help. MusiCares is one of those organizations, and they are there to help out musicians who are struggling, so do not hesitate to reach out to them if you feel you need help.

@@slawaschwed I am pretty much down to making music for my own pleasure these days. I love the challenge of covering music some foley art
I love but I dont have an audience for it, not these days
In the meantime I spend volunteer hours running a foodbank trying to feed people, organizing efforts, drop offs, pickups all of it. Do I like it, no not really. Am I passionate about it, over time it grows on you
In the long run music definitely got me over a lot of imagined insecurities, shyness, for many its easy, myself it was a major challenge
I want to see an end to this covid purgatory we are in (as a Canadian). Its soul killing to grassroots culture, small business , all manner of organizations. Speaking for myself I feel an obligation to positive action

This is SUCH an important topic. As someone dealing with depression and anxiety it actually took me a long time to even feel ready to tackle professional projects in this field. Absolutely agree. Time is against everyone and we try to manage our lives the best we can. I think the key is to always be honest, truthful and give 100 percent even if you only get 10 percent back. Making music and being creative with people is one of the best things in life.

Wow! Just wow! i just suffered a nervous breakdown last week because of the overwhelming feeling of not feeling 'it" anymore after 20 years of dedication. Mainly I hit a personal tragedy
losing my parents 5 years ago while releasing our first album. The energy was gone and i have been working a full time job and having two kids and trying to learn how to pivot from a guitar player to trying to learn how to home record and not just get by but do it well just like everyone on this page. I feel very fortunate but also very fatigued because it is endless hours and days now years of dedicating and fine tuning my ears to gaining a better understanding of what we need to do. I fail, and get back up. i fall and get back up. I wonder and sit and watch another tutorial... and i don't know why some days. Our band is light years away from accomplishing anything but my soul burns with each passing hour to get somewhere with it. Another great video Marc and Warren Thanks for these!

Therapy and medication. Some people require meds to function and always will. Just like some people need glasses and always will. Some need some help for a bit, some get by with just someone to talk to or physical activity. But everyone is different. What works for one may not work for another, and there’s no shame in that. Be gentle to yourselves.

One of the reasons I took last week and this week off from music I needed a reset. I'm having to figure out how to include music (making and starting my business) when I'm not at my 40 hour a week job. It's not been easy 1: finding the time 2: understanding it all. It's taken a lot of time and got a bit overwhelming. My job is stressful enough and music should be my release from that and not add to it. Hopefully when the year ticks over I can find my center again. Thanks Marc much appreciated :)

Some great points here. When I graduated in 2000, I'd spent ten years playing in bands, setting up my own studio and doing live sound. That continued for another four years till I was almost bankrupt and had no other focus in my life. I then spent the next six years away from music completely, including guitar playing. However, if music is truly IN you, its not something you can fully switch off. I spent those years building up an amp repair/modification business and put all of my energy into that. That also segued into playing 100-150 gigs a year and 4 hours of sleep most nights, with most of Sunday catching up (if I wasn't gigging then too). It taught me that I have an addictive personality and can't do things by halves. I thought that taking on other interests would be the answer, so I took up brewing/distilling. That took over my entire live and I was completely obsessed - it is now my full-time occupation (ha ha). In the past year I've experienced some pretty significant life-changing events that gave me time to really reflect on things and ask what is really important. I have much better balance between music production, guitar playing and brewing/distilling now. However, I took up fitness and that has been a complete obsession too, but thats not such a bad thing. My only other vice is my unchecked addiction to buying plugins. Great video btw, and some very important points made well.

That's why I see this as a hobby, If you do not expect too much from what you are doing, you cannot be that disappointed that it brings you down. Luckily I don't have ADD, but my guitar player has it. If he has one coffee with caffeine you see the poor man change. and I have to calm him down. It's very strange. Stay Healthy Marc.

Great advice Marc, you're such a great communicator, and these feelings need to be addressed frequently, more so in times like these. I find by allowing my subconscious mind time to catch up to my constantly overwhelmed conscious mind that I'm able to cope with the days murkier moments. I use a few techniques to achieve this. The simplest one is to watch a movie or series but only for 15-20 minutes at a time, usually in that time my subconscious spits out the solutions and I get clarity. I also use very simple yoga techniques to stretch out all the muscles and get all blood flowing into the brain. Believe me, I'm no guru but geeeez, it really works and helps calm me down and relaxes the body into meditative state. I tell ya, then the positive solutions really start rolling out...WOW! I do it in the corner of my studio pretty much everyday and it's really helps me focus on the good stuff. Anyway I hope that helps. Thanks again Marc, really enjoying your videos, the mental side of all of this is just so important, well done.

Such beautiful and meaningful advice. As always it’s the little things that make life easier. We’ve all obsessed over a song and then looked up and it’s 3am night after night... to then have that song just not work out. Taking the space for yourself to take time out and get a different perspective will always be positive.
I particularly like the sentiment about life being a journey. It’s a never ending journey but that’s what makes it fun because the journey is what matters!
Thank you for your insights. I hope everyone stays healthy and is able to find someone to share their thoughts, fears, loves and passion with! Bring on 2021!

Be a fellow of many tribes, visit many islands, everything is meant to be a lesson,
this is your journey, your journey, do your work, just do your work and
permit yourself to enjoy some piece of heaven because it is already yours.
When you feel yourself way too soaked in an activity watch out about yourself,

I started to go professional this year, started working from home and made the same experience as my twin brother, who is a freelance media designer for film, fotography etc.
we both started to get obsessed about cooking next to our things we're doing. When you have to be at home (and maybe are not financially free enough to go out every day to do so), it's really nice to spend some time in another room, something that you can also enjoy or treat yourself in a nice way (i mean, it's food), just doing something else.
Also I'm a musician, so twice a week i'd go to the rehearsal room in the morning to practice drums (with ear protection of course haha) and it's kind of a long way to go, like 30 to 45 minutes. I'm always motivated and have a fresh mind from the feeling of going somewhere else. Buying groceries, going for a walk, cleaning. Actually there are some nice and productive things you can combine. BUT YOU HAVE TO HAVE A PLAN.

For a very long time i used to think that people would not care if i speak to them about the problems I faced in this field as a professional but my perception changed when i was invited in a couple of universities to give a lecture on music production. I talked to them more about morals and ethics and piracy than music production.

Every single one of them wants to pull me every which way to get their gear set up, hooked in, and spiked if necessary. Every 45 minutes or so I find myself starting to have trouble breathing (I wouldn't call it a panic or anxiety attack, more like I've just been tensed up for too long) and I need to step outside and take a few minutes just to sit and breathe. Employers often don't see the toll that our jobs take on us mentally and emotionally. It felt like this video took a load off my back.

Wonderful episode. I like the idea of the 2nd passion. Marc is a very thoughtful individual ... For me, I love the electronic aspect of recordings ... which, yes, is still related to tracking and the production process, but still has provided space for me to refocus my mind. Thanks for making this happen Warren. Great stuff.

Thank you so much for this. I'm 26 and I've been working towards my musical aspirations as a songwriter, bass player and bandleader and engineer for 5 years. It's taxing, and I've come to the same conclusions that you have. Whithout regular mental health check ins, exercise, meditation, and hobbies, life gets grey very fast. The high of creating isn't self sustaining, as I thought it would be when I was starting out. I felt like the character in the new Pixar movie soul when he's riding the subway home from the greatest gig, he's just the same old Joe, nothing more or less.
It's so important to talk about this and I really appreciate your vulnerability. I will be looking into the organizations you mentioned as well.

Oye!!.....mental health has been a minefield this year!!.
I never really earned income from studio engineering. More of a serious hobby. My income comes from live sound work......so that's gone for the foreseeable future. However, working on creative music recording projects at home has been my one big source of joy. People in the recording business reaching out to each other more is a great idea!.
    It's all about community! :-)

Great video. Sometimes we fail, but is failure even failure? We take what we learn and build on it. That's how I've always tried to look at it, at least. Whether it's a record or a relationship or some financial thing, you take that pain or the lesson learned or the part that didn't quite fit, and you use it later. Maybe years later, but it wasn't for nothing.

Weirdly, mixing is my "do something else". I do a pretty stressful day job 60+ hours a week and get another 20 or so hours into mixing/making music. Sometimes you don't notice how ground down you are until you actually stop for a week and listen to your body. The best thing I ever did for stress management was buy a static exercise bike, smashing an hour on that every morning has completely changed the way I feel every day.

By that you mean you are just relatively more worried about details or are you actually having a diagnose of ADHD (A chronic condition including attention difficulty, hyperactivity, and impulsiveness.) Asking because t would be pretty difficult to mix or make music with that. Just curious.

@@massivebeatzz it’s not difficult...Actually. I have sever ADHD and was dognoised when I was 9. Making music and mixing, producing is one of the few things that I excel big time in compared to most. Like it works in reverse for the things you are most passionate about. In fact, I’ve spoken to a lot of people about this and they too connect and agree.

    • @sonidojamon
      @sonidojamon 3 роки тому

@@massivebeatzz Well, I was diagnosed a couple years ago with severe ADHD. Started with therapy and medication, and it changed my life. People with ADHD are not exactly careless or easily distracted, its much more complex than that. When interested in something, it can be the total opposite: HYPERFOCUS. The ability to concentrate on some task way above average, to an extreme that the rest of the world disappears. Before therapy (coaching, training) and meds, I was good at producing and mixing, but chaotic and inconsistent. It took me a loooong time to finish stuff, cause I was obsessed with details and the crystal clear goal I had in my head (borderline TOC). But I always managed to get unique and great results and my work was praised by clients and colleagues. Now it takes me 1/4 of that time to do the same things. I notice I wander less, and stay in every little task till its good to go.
      BUT (a funny bit now)
I keep putting the kettle on to make tea, again and again because as soon as I live the kitchen it ceases to exist. The only way to succeed on that task is to keep staring at it till is ready. And then, when finally stops I realise I could have used that time to prepare the cup with a spoon, tea, and some honey. So while I do that, the water cools down (too much for my taste) so I press the kettle switch again and then do everything properly the next time it stops. That's if I'm lucky not to get a notification, a message, or someone talks to me (while I'm having constant random thoughts or ideas asking for my attention in my head). That's my head since I wake up to my last conscious thought before falling asleep.
The conclusion: Making tea is hard, and a complex mix is easy. Not really, but you get the point ;-)
Any AD(H)D fellas around here can relate? Thanks for your comments!
(I've probably used some weird sentences or syntax. Sorry about that, I'm not that fluent in english!) Cheers!

Yes, you need to switch and rest 100%, so not for long and "burn out" at work.
In difficult situations, I read books by philosophers, etc., for example, Victor Frankl's " Say to Life: Yes!". Or I switch to a completely different type of activity, do physical exercises and walks, too, must be done.

I've been thinking about this very topic lately. Health and balance. How can I be a good mixer and achieve good balance in my work, if I'm way out of balance in my life? Balance for me is something that can only be achieved with gentle awareness and adjustments in response to what's is happening within me and around me. So often, my impulse is to do something drastic and over-correct. But that only leaves me just as out of balance, but in a different way than I was before. When I can ask myself "Am I out of balance?" and then use my awareness to gently gravitate towards a more balanced state then that's usually plenty good. Improvements in health take time.
    Brilliant topic! Thanks so much!

Maybe in the old days, becoming a producer was difficult. Nowadays, you can have a nice computer at low price and start right away with a "lite" DAW where you can mix-in free samples/loops. And no need to press CD anymore, there are cheap online distributor that will gladly put your music on (a LOT) streaming platform for a small fee.

Thank you Marc for shining a light on such an important subject! Great stuff. We all have varying amounts of "luggage", maybe especially in creative fields such as this. Personally, what I do to unwind, recharge and to get back to the "here and now" is to go fishing, go for a run, or just play a computer game with my buddies. It usually does the trick. :)
