I have a very well-maintained (but 5 year old) laptop with only 4GB RAM and a 512GB HDD. 2160p HD videos play without any problems, but perhaps the age of my device and generation of processor stops 4K videos being played seemlessly.

@@jubaerbd007 If have 2 GB ram then you need to make sure you don't do multi tasking. Also make sure not have many windows opened. Remove all unnecessary unwanted applications. No need to install any ram cleaner because anywhich it will lag more.
Thank you, adjusting file caching fixed the problem for me in VLC 3.0.4, the subtitles are still a little weird but better than black subtitles in current VLC. Anyone reading this, I've had great luck with PotPlayer. I've only ever used VLC so switching feels weird but it's worth it to me until a fix is found for the subtitles.
Nope, thanks though... I have a fairly strong computer, video card, my OS on an SSD and 32 Gigs of memory. but nothing seems to work. A real shame too because I tried Windows Media Player and it looked HORRIBLE! The colours and picture with VLC looked WAY better! Actually, disabling Hardware Acceleration DID help it to be much smoother than with it on 'Automatic', but all the other settings had no effect or very little effect. My cache was set at 1000, so I set it at 2000. Still not smooth though, I would say maybe 70% better.
Лол. Поставить kmplayer будет решением проблемы или gomplayer. Vlc всегда лагал. Особенно если это специфичный формат с видеоригистратора или.... Или 60% форматов видео о которых на линуксе скажем не слышали и они не работают
yeah... this video was not very helpful. most of the settings you suggest are already the default settings, and the few that you suggest that are not (the default settings) did not help

i had 1000 in file caching , is 2000 right ? seems kinda high from the numbers you had
Most of the time the problem arises because you are using 32 bit version of VLC and not 64 bit version (if your system is 64) that is it
Lit my problem. Got a new rig and made the simple mistake of installing 32bit instead of 64. Good save ffam.
