I have a Faber -Castell Emotion on the table right next to me, and yes Hongdian 6013 it's very similar to that pen!
I've had this one in my wish list for a while. I love that design on the cap.
I've had this pen inked up for 9 months now. It has dried up a couple of times when left unused for 1-2 weeks, but never when left unused less than a week. I did have the same problems with drying out and leaking with the black forest though. It was related to the converter. The plastic around the black plastic liner where the converter grips the feed had several small cracks.
Dried out as in you needed to dip it in some distilled water or pump the rotate the converter piston a bit? Did you end up getting another converter? Do you know if it takes converters from other companies?
@@pietertalens1256 I only had to tap the nib gently a bit to get it going, or prime the feed with the converter. I have found that Wing Sung converters are the same size. I have ordered generic converters with ID 3.4mm, but they haven't arrived yet, so I can't guarantee they will fit.
I have a screw cap version of the pen that works well. I looked for what you called a "hole" around the cap, couldn't find
one or any open space there. No drying or leaking here...so far. Thanks, James!
I have this pen. I carried it in my bag without any case and I’m glad it didn’t leak. I also keft it for a week in my bag (I forgot to take it out) and it still wrote well. Thank you for the heads up. I’ll be more careful with my pen. I guess I was just lucky
I have one of these Hongdian. I bought it in the early parts of my fountain pen journey on a whim, a decision based purely on aesthetics. I used it once then never again and it has been sitting in my desk drawer. I'll probably ink it up again and put it in rotation in my ever growing collection. It does write well just the same as all my Hongdian pens, only problem I found with this pen was that it was a bit too heavy posted and too short for me un-posted. I should also mention that I have what in the sport of cricket they call "bucket hands". :-)
UNBELIEVEABLE coincidence James! I have been using a new Diplomat Magnum and it ran out of ink this morning and I needed to rotate to a new pen. I purchased this exact pen months ago because I really like the Black Forest I have and literally just took the Hongdian 6013 out and started using it (Holy cow!! What are the chances??) I actually inked it up with the cartridge that came with it when I got it and then just put it in the box that it came in. It would not write when I tried to use it but, just hit it with a couple drops of water from the tap and it has been very reliable so far. Love the review by the way, always enjoy your reviews and your candor. I am more of a medium nib user, tends to be my preference. Why does that ink dance so good? God Bless you James.
I tend toward mediums most often, too. And this ink does make the pen look good. It's a favorite of mine, suggested by a viewer or 3 last year.
@@JG3Reviews I like experimenting and experiencing fun ink colors. The "dancing" reference was to the Rolling Stone's song 😁
I haven't noticed it drying out, but i have had the pen less than a month. The Ink I put in it is wrong for it, (Pennonia Dungo) is too light for such a fine nib. I need to cycle another type of ink in it to be sure, but it has written right away each time i have picked it up.
I just got it, I don't know how with drying, the problem with the fude nib has not yet been resolved, writes poorly. But, in the cap, the clip tightening adjustment bolt is punched right through the plastic seal of the writing block. I filled it with glue through a syringe, the cap stopped blowing.
Try blowing gently into the cap, if you hear hissing then use qtip to seal it up
After looking closer i think i have a different model. The pen clip does not spring.. its super hard. Nurling and cap design is the same but on the cap finial it says "LT Hong dian 6013S," It also has a screw on cap. It came to me from Truphae. They called it the Black Dahlia. No leaking or drying from mine either. Inside no 6013 on the grip (thats where the threads are) and there are three bands indented on the grip. I think those of us with the screw on cap might have a newer model. otherwise identical pen. No leaking and no drying out. I let it sit a lot since i have unfavorable ink in it. hope that helps.
Thank you, James. I get a lot of pens drying out: all my Jinhao ones (Centennial, 159, X450, Li Bai special) particularly, which is frustrating when travelling (having to screw down the piston to prim ethe feed while everyone watches to see how much ink burps everywhere when I get it wrong). The Hong Dian Black Forest doesn't. I'm tempted to widen the top channel of the feed & see whether that improves things - what d'you think?
I've not needed to modify my Black Forest, but I did deepen a top channel on one of my Wing Sung 601s to increase flow. It was so dry that Noodler's Heart of Darkness came out a middling grey. That improved things dramatically, and it did not take much to do so either.
@@JG3Reviews Thanks, James - I'll give it a try.
It's a lovely pen. I Have 2 (M & F). I don't keep them inked up long enough for the nib to dry up. No problems for a week.
So far the ink I used in the review, which is different from the one that dried out, is holding up better. Sometimes it's finding the right combo; that may be part of what affected my experiences earlier.
The knurling handle is rubber isnt it ?
Interesting that your cap is push/pull type... mine came with a twist cap.
The section has 3 ring grooves, not slippery (I usually dislike metal sections, but this one I actually like).
I guess that maybe they improved the design?
Yes, there seem to be two generations, and I looked at Etsy and both are still available. I'd prefer the twist cap.
I like my heavy pens. I have the Black Forest and its nice, if a bit thin. I hated, however, that this pen didn't post. I always lose stuff and I do a lot of moving while working so I like them to post and post well. This didn't at all. It would need to be pushed on firmly but the cap would nudge against your hand and then come off while you were writing and it drove me mad. Ended up returning it even though it wrote pretty nicely.
James, I just looked at the end (finial area) and there is writing on it, the Hongdian name as well as 6013s so, maybe they are not the same pen, also the converter that came with the pen does not have the spring so, maybe not the same pen afterall? Still like the weight of the pen and it writes ok. Not as fond of tis pen as I am of the Black Forest.
Judging for your description and a. couple others, there must be a couple different generations of this pen out there. I think I've had mine about November 2020, though I have no idea when it may have been manufactured.
James, your live wallpaper is awesome. 😁
Now, let me watch the video in peace.
Ha. I can get distracted by that, too.
Nice pen. Great review! Could you do a review of the Hong Dian 517s? Thank you (:
I might have to check that out.
thanks for the reviews. The cold , tell me about it were having temperature that hovers around -13 f (In Ottawa Canada) for the past week... brrrr
We lived in Russia seeing extremes as low as -52º, so the 8º today isn't outside my wheelhouse. When our older daughter was born in upstate NY the temps were around were closer to what you're experiencing. I think it was around -8º the day we took her home from the hospital.
I've been to the Toronto/London area, but never made it to Ottawa, though I do remember my grandparents slideshow from their trip in 1979. lol
Quirks happen. 😉 I have several older Esterbrook pens with the exact same nibs, and the same models, and they write different from each other. And not just because they're old and used. Even pens from the earlier days can be different per pen.
With the Hong Dian, it's one I have been looking at getting. I love my Black Forest, and this looks like something I would like, as well. Thanks for sharing this!
I was writing a good bit with it again last night, and I will say that it's an enjoyable pen. It likes the Monteverde ink that I filled it with for the review better than whatever it was I had in it before (I don't recall).
@@JG3Reviews Something I've discovered with some of my pens, as well. I can use a really dry ink in a 1940s Wahl-Eversharp Skyliner that just doesn't work in say a Chinese pen or even a few of my Esterbrook pens. And I have to definitely use fairly specific inks in some of my pens. Joys of the fountain pen addiction, I guess.
I'm about to purchase my first fountain pen. I did a lot of research on which one to buy, and I liked the Pilot Metropolitan and Hongdian 6013. Can anyone recommend me which one I should get?
Buy the two pens. Once you get in to this hobby you'll end up getting lots of them anyway.
Reminds me of the e-motion from fb
if anyone could tell me wich is better the hongdian 6013 or the hongdian black forest .i do architecture i like to take notes and do some sketches with fountain pen i checked out in the net and i liked the design of the hongdian but still confused btw these two models
Im also a architect student. The black forest grib is too small for a continously work. This 6013 seem to be better.
Interesting that yours is slip cap. I have one that has a screw cap.
mine is also a screw on cap.. very interesting.
Mine is also a screw cap
The nib is more smooth than the other pens I have used
This pen looks like a copy of the Faber-Castell E-motion pure black. What is your opinion?
Definitely. I have an E-Motion, and it's a wonderful pen, but I'm sure this Hongdian is far more economical.
Phần thân nó bọc cao su phải ko anh em nhìn ko rõ kim loại hay nhựa nhám.
Could give a link to pen cases?
The large 48 pen case that I think I mentioned here was a gift, but I'm pretty certain it is the same as this one: amzn.to/2ZwK25M
looks like a Faber-Castell e-Motion
I chose the pilot metropolitan over this pen. It's more attractive but less reliable
The metropolitan is more attractive but less reliable?
Try to relax your trigger finger...
I'm double-jointed, that is relaxed. Tense would have my finger bent the other way. 😂
