Amy Beach wrote a set of 'Music's Ten Commandments as Given for Young Composers', which begins: "Spare neither time nor strength in the perfecting of the technic of composition, beginning with the simplest rudiments. Your musical material must be perfectly under control as is language in the case of a writer of literature. One must never be compelled to pause in the development of an idea through lack of knowledge of spelling or grammar." I wish modern schools of composition took this to heart more thoroughly!
Recorded by Peter Anthony Smith on the 21st of September, 2015, on a Buffet Festival Clarinet, Vandoren B40 mouthpiece, BG L4SR ligature, and a Vandoren V12 Strength 3.5 reed.
