Daniel Latham I think Gaga is a reliable substitute, but reliable isn't what you should try to be if you're a musician trying to do "art pop". Bowie, Kate Bush and Grace Jones kind went in a much less linear direction. I don't dislike Gaga, but I would rather Jones to her.
I worked for an FM station in my hometown in the late 1980s and then I dropped the needle to play 'Slave To The Rhythm' and fell in love with Grace Jones. To perform a cover of a classic Roxy Music song such as 'Love Is The Drug' and do it great if not better requires a sheer ammount of talent.
This is the best ever made Cover from this song. I love the Album version (7.12 Minuten), the long version (8.41 Minuten) and the 12" Single remix (7.23 Minuten)
She was extremely way ahead of her time.Hard to believe this song and video is from 1980,right at heal of the disco era. This could easily be from 84 and 85,very talented and versatile woman and innovative.
This is the version of Love is the Drug that came out in 1985 on the Island Life album. The video accompanied it and MTV played it late nights late '85, early '86. She was still ahead of her time and my appreciation for her has grown through the years.
In the late 90s, I attended one of her shows in SF. Afterward, I had the privilage of dancing with her most of the remainder of the night. I even got a kiss goodnight! 😀
Awesome Stuff. I went to her concert in 2009 and she let people (about 50) on the stage during pull up to the bumper. I did star jumps behind her while she was singing. Very exciting.
At the end of the show 2 giant cannons on the stage shot out multi coloured confetti so I scooped as much as I could up and I've still got it in a shoebox at home. I LOVE HER TOO
Miss Grace Jones, you are a cultural icon of music, fashion, style, attitude and I've admired you since the beginning. Thank you for shining your light onto the world. OOOX
If you caught a live performance by Grace Jones in the early 1980s, you literally entered the future. She put a performance together that was a mix of fashion show, dub music, performance art, and live vocals. Every song had a different set, different look, and visual effect. Of course, it helped she had some of the best musicians money could buy on her recorded instrumental track, Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare. And, for good measure, Chris Blackwell did his mixing magic. Grace Jones was underrated then and is surely way underrated now. You can't overstate her influence on her contemporaries at the time.
When i was a child, all the movies and magazine my parents had got this kind of science-fiction/brutalism post comunism/pop art imagery, i grew up in that. And now i'm fascinated with that. It reminds me of my childhood.

Face to face, toe to toe
Heart to heart as we hit the floor
Lumber up, limbo down
The locked embrace, the stumble round
I say go, she say yes
Dim the lights, you can guess the rest
