- Las Vegas Casino Demolition: Blowdown is an explosive four part building demolition series profiling some of the most challenging projects of Controlled Demolition Inc of Phoenix, Maryland. Each of the structures, some notable, others notorious, is unique and present the team with challenges ranging from the structural, to the explosive and to the bureaucratic.
In this episode the team from CDI descends on Las Vegas to take
down the Frontier Hotel and Casino landmark using 5000 sticks of
dynamite.
A vintage Vegas structure, the Frontier was the second hotel to be
built on the strip and hosted notable performers like Elvis, the
Supremes and Seigfried and Roy. Recently purchased for 1.2 billion
dollars, the hotel is being imploded to make way for a reconstruction
of New York's Plaza Hotel. But unlike most demolitions, in most cities,
anything that happens in Vegas is part of a larger spectacle, so not
only is the demo team contending with taking down the building, but
in working around more than 1,600 kg of fireworks and pyrotechnics
which will be used in the pre-demo show.
Despite its diminutive stature, the team expects to use in excess of
1,000 kg of dynamite, more than the team used to bring down the 32
story Stardust hotel earlier in the year. The team is challenged by a
lack of accurate blueprints and the concentration of rebar that
threatens the operation.
As they drill the holes to load the dynamite massive amounts of re-bar are found, preventing proper placement of dynamite and to add
further complication, they come across toxic asbestos within the hotel walls. So with only days to go before the implosion, CDI rethinks the demo plan and attacks the structure by pre-weakening it. Heavy-duty drills and skid-steers equipped with jack-hammers cut the support walls.
They plan an innovative technique using cables to ensure that the
building will fall in the direction they want it to. The cables are
wrapped around an end of the structure and attached to the elevator shaft inside the hotel. The plan is to pull the wall away from the neighbouring roadway and into the fall zone.
The implosion is set for 2:30 am, and the fireworks technicians will
warm up the Vegas crowd for the grand finale turning the historical
Frontier into a pile of rubble.

This implosion was one of the best ones I've ever seen. I love the pyrotechnic countdown and plunger. It was amazing
Wonder if they did 9/11 aswell
@Cristopher wouldn't be suprised, they do a ton of government work. He even mentioned the trade center on the Miami Beach episode
@@Agent0range67no that was a terrorist attack
As a workplace safety specialist, this type of stuff is absolutely facinating. Even after 30+ years of on-site hazard analysis, compliance trainings, lectures, site-audits, training sessions, and meeting thousands of industrial professionals who help manage environmental, health, and safety - this stuff still makes the 10-year old in me wide-eyed and filled with wonder. GREAT channel, excellet episode, and you've earned a new subscriber. Excellent production quality to educate, motivate, and inspire - pleasek eep up the good work. Thank you.
I stayed at the Frontier once. Came back late one night and sat down to play black jack. Sitting there was Milton Berle! Played a few hands with Uncle Miltie.
I was lucky enough to live in Vegas when this came down. If you ever get a chance to see something like this take it and see it. It will probably be in the top 10 memories
That’s what you consider to be lucky?
Your family is absolutely amazing. I am in awe of your knowledge, dedication and attention to spectators, co-workers, just everything!!💜💜💜
I love in the beginning of the introduction that they gave a good example of “don’t step on it Stacy” This brought me to tears 😂
Only implosion I made it down to while living in Vegas, great to witness in person, very well done!!!
Guys, please tell everyone about this channel it deserves 3 million at least
I always love watching documentary shows & ur's are awesome to watch. And always have front row seats.Ty
just amazing how they overcome the set-backs to make it all work....what a spectacular show but a hell of a lot of hard work put in by dedicated experts to make it all happen and all over in less than a minute...just the clean up afterward...
Not only the best job in the world but the coolest people ever you guys are awesome
Fantastic video Thank you for filming --- Debbie & Tiffany
Enjoyed this thx.
Great documentary. I enjoyed how much detail went into the whole process... the demolition and the documentary crew.👍
I'm enjoying all of that brain and brawn.
😊amazing
Toataly 😊😊😊😊😊
That was quite the show! Clever!
Guys run!!!!!! Go go go!
Not only is it easier to clean it up when there's just the shell of the building, but it's also safer. While a non-loadbearing wall won't hold the weight of the building, it CAN resist it for long enough that the structure starts shifting in an un-wanted direction, and all of a sudden, it's not falling into the drop zone any more. It's all about minimizing the chance of trouble.
It’s been over 12 years since it was demolished, 2 rejected Casino plans and a land sale later and still nothing. They might aswell have just kept it standing and open for all the hassle of knocking it down for nothing
Thanks for the info. I was five minutes in and curious.
Wynn west seems to be making some progress. I’d build a 100-story tower if that didn’t happen.
should not demolish it. shud just turn it into a mall or shelter
Doesnt Vegas have enough casinos already? Why not build a park or something, everything has to be covered by buildings... I dont understand that thinking.
its better to have removed it actually, even if nothing is built there it could collapse on it own or people could have gone in and either scrapped what little is left or squatted in it. the place was already abandon and falling apart. its a a lot harder to fix and repair a abandon building to make a new one.
The Frontier had such a neat and beautiful swimming pool...so sad that it's all gone now.
I was in that pool 1 time.
Just after I hit a royal flush in video poker!
extraordinary Vegas show
Liked the video
Losing millions daily well it's 2019 and there's still nothing been done on the location since demolish was cleaned up
Well aslong as the building is there they need to pay govt for the taxes. Demolishing the building will lessen their tax payment
Came here to say this. 2020 now, still a vacant lot. Very much adds to the sadness clouding the northern portion of the strip
Corona "hold my beer"
this is the flashiest demolition i've ever seen
You can never get rid of all the asbestos. Being near those demos without breathing filters is foolhardy.
Dont understand why those mid-sized buildings arent flooded with NASA sized water cannons. That would greatly reduce the dust migration.
@Geo Thomas : what are you talking about?
@Geo Thomas Something wrong with how your using your mask. I've been in the industry over 30 yrs and never had a problem.
@@rogerscottcathey Exactly what i was thinking. You would think in this day and age it would be an industry.
@@rogerscottcathey Because they'd need to build a tall water tower, pump it full with water which will take a few days, setup a pipe network, several more towers around the building to pump water onto the building and after the demo-work to spray the debris to reduce dust... All in all a few weeks work at least, couple million USD price tag and likely one or more towers used to spray the building/debris will also end up getting knocked over causing damage...
The care this company takes to make sure nothing hurts spectators is why they are wanted world wide
We are running out of conscientious ppl like this tht take the care for others at their own risk..breathing in chemicals n such n working in unstable buildings ..they are to be commended and I hope they are paid well for this bc they certainly deserve it!!!
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO VERY NICE
Vegas has to be extra on everything
Making a firework and big show out of a demolition. Only in America, lol :D
Marvelous!
I got to see this in person it was so cool. Wynn was completely covered by dust lol.
Inspires the interest of a movie!!1
GEEEEZ! Who was the flamer?!!
Massive explosions... might be my next line of work.
Fucking incredible and down right impressive...
I've yet to see a demolition documentary where this man wasn't bemoaning the fact that the construction engineers did their jobs correctly! Still , these videos make real vivid viewing
Total boss. Every one of you.
19:00 Its called the starDUST they should have seen that comming
lol
I noticed that they didn't mention two of those firework controllers failed to go down the zip lines like they were supposed to.
At 46:00 you can clearly see the pods for the controllers zip out of the building yes?
miss the good old wrecking ball days
This is so sad. i have stayed in the frontier for meny times over the years. I used to own a four acre parcel West of the Fronteer up until 1997.
Wynn can call the Frontier what he wants but it's built 10 times stronger and better than his modern casino. Lots of concrete and steel bars
It ironic that the property still has nothing there after the building was removed.
Is Vegas the tourist trap it used to be. No rat pack entertainment.
No Stars 😀❗ No real move Stars either 👎😕
Those old phones are hilarious.
Holy shit, that Freiss guy & his lisp would drive me crazy!

Very interesting. Have a nice day now.
This is what they mean when they say they don't make em like they used to
if the zip line didn't work, then the barrels would be shot out by the explosions into the crowd
So, at 40:06, why is the solution not to build a box around it? That seems like such an easy thing to deal with. If it's that important that people don't step on it, take ten minutes to make sure that nobody CAN? What am I missing here?
Stacey rules!
11:42 Should have just had the jet fly into it. Would have saved alot of extra work.
I noticed that two of the firework detonator "exit buckets" didn't detonate.
so much history being destroyed

where did you get the hd crisp footage?
It feels like a event more then a demolition

47:08 Explanation
Am I the only one who skips up every once in a while to get closer to the demolition?
No.
Probably, there's a reason its called a *documentary*, as in it documents the process leading up the explosion. What's the point of watching a documentary if you aren't going to watch the process from the beginning?
Same
I Bet ! That Dear Joe ! And Robert ! Were ! Saying NO ! AND Shocked ! By this !.Money ! Building !.being Demmed !!

Steve Wynn is wrong because "The single biggest toilet in las vegas" is steve wynn. Lol
I would like to elect Circus Circus as biggest toilet in Las Vegas.
I find it difficult to cheer for the tearing down of something historical
I guess Sansa of house Stark found a job after the show ended. 30:01
“We’re breathing in tonnes of the stuff.” Ever heard of face masks, the proper stuff?
38:00 ✨Frontir✨
I only hope the team we're alright after all of this was done considering all the Cancer's & health risk exposed too .
Stayed here in the early 2000's and I can see why it got torn down. The rooms were very bad and not updated. We paid for a tower room and they put us on the first floor in a different spot facing a parking lot. I was pissed, and they finally got us a room in the tower which was a LOT better. Still I remember there were some very weird repetitive cracks in the same places snaking up from floor to floor, and it didnt look too good.
CDI has their list of Mob era casinos that they blew up. In 93 the Dune was blown up Wynn bought the property it is now the Bellagio. 94 the Landmark met its fate this land became Treasure Island. 95 they blew up Sands the Venetian and the Trump Tower stands here today. The Hacienda was next in 96 it became Mandalay Bay. two years later Aladdin's was next it took two years to bring down it is now the Fashion Place Mall and Planet Hollywood. For New Years in 2000 CDI blew up the El Rancho it became the Turnberry Towers and The Draw. 2001 The Desert Inn was blown up and the property is now owned by Trump and Steve Wynn and the Wynn Building and the Trump Tower are located on it. In 2006 The Castaway met its fate it was replaced by a newer bowling ally. In 2006 CDI also blew up the Bourbon Street, the Boardwalk, and the Stardust. In 2007 the Frontier met its fate Steve Wynn is trying to finish the project for President Trump but set backs have delayed it and soon new buildings will rest here.
@House Owner I fixed my mistakes these are all the casinos that CDI blew up.
you know its bad when wynn las vegas says that the new frontier is "the single biggest toilet in las vegas"
I love how the girls working with the dynamite complain about the smell yet dont wear any type of breathing/filter mask
@Geo Thomas you don't need to wear a full face mask
nitro is absorbed through the skin too, especially in such large quantities and vegas heat, it's not just the fumes, you'd have to be walking around in insanely hot stuffy hazmat suits
Geo Thomas WOW keyboard warrior... just shut your trap! I’m just not gonna sit behind my keyboard and let you act like you was there, like your now a explosive expert key board warrior!!!
@@streetfighterracing1583 my dude. That’s literally what you just did lmfao
2007 in Las Vegas: Las Vegas says goodbye Frontier Hotel
As of today, Steve Wynn has plans to build a third tower on the frontier property I just hope that he can finally get around to putting that property to some use once and for all because 17 years later, it is still an empty dirt lot
Stacy and her sister should wear PPE like good mask and gloves so they don't inhale those chemicals from that dynamite
Las Vegas 13 November 2007 New Frontier Hotel Fireworks & Demolition.
I used to work security at the Frontier.
for safety i figure that they would have the state of the art LED lights. they do sell 30.000 lumen lights and that would be more safety than those old type of lights.
This was done in 2007. LED tech was nowhere near where it is now.
44:29 is what you're here for.
Its okay,I don't suffer from ATTENTION SPAN DEFICIT. I find the whole video interesting. That's why they made it.
Where is Episode 1?
Yeah!!!!!
The Frontier for demolition plays to seconds in 2007
I miss these hotels they had the best pools. stardust frontier rivera and tropicana nicest pool areas you felt like you were not in vegas but more tropical. The pools now are just concrete small and cookie cutter style.
With every implosion, Vegas loses a piece of its rich, colorful history. *sigh* :(
Have they rebuilt it yet ❗
To this day it is still an empty lot. Currently owned by Wynn
they should have just renovated it instead of demolishing it
The CDI techs need to make sure they have equipment so they don’t have to inhale the fumes from the explosives when they are placing them in the holes
I was confused about this too- they were complaining about side effects yet have literally zero safety equipment on (unless done for documentary drama only)
New frontier hotel fire works 44:29
Just out of curiosity, how many skeletal remains was found after demolition?
Probably none, they're all buried WAAAAAY out in the desert somewhere.
The bodies are in the basement foundation.
what do you mean she can't wear gloves? what if the wires have rust or something? there are no gloves on earth made for construction, demolition, or anything like that? she has to simply be okay with slicing her hands up in over 5,000 holes? that doesn't sound right
I'm wondering if the ladies loading the explosives couldn't wear some type of glove to keep the nitroglycerin off their skin and some type of respirator so they are not inhaling the fumes off the nitro. I love the series but when I watched and heard about the intensity of the nitro fumes and it on their skin it worried me. I know I saw people wearing gloves while cutting the sticks.

Skip to 45:00 for the best part of the video
8:45: Talking about removal of interior wall portions: "Taking out more may cause this house of cards to collapse.". Isn't that the desired result, safely of course? Guess no one reviewed narrator's text before it was given for reading. Same type of thing mentioned a few minutes later. If a few interior blasts can drop it, don't need all the hubub. Just drop the damned thing. Also, "set for 2:30 am". Date? ...a typical miss these days...
That's the trouble. you don't really want the building, or maybe just a part of it, to come down on your head.
Las Vegas New Frontier Hotel Demolition So Multiple People Fixed Line Very Few People?
Now the tropicana will be demolished
Exactly 😉
