I wanted an outdoor stove to make lint logs and smelt my ballistics gel :) so Barret and I gathered up some parts and made one. It is a fun project. I recommend it highly.
Thanks to BillGoudy who inspired me to make it. He built one to heat his camper which he is currently homesteading in.

there is alot of coments on here so maybe someone already suggested, take a wire brush and a chipping hammer and get rid all that slag before you shoot a bead on top another. also take more time to prep the surface to be welded and you will have better results. im not judgeing just some helpful advice for your next project. good video though i ordered one them kits gonna build me a stove when it arrives! Keep goin at it brother!

Well had a good laugh. Glad to see father and son project with laughter and joy. I have a place in my basement that would be perfect for one like that. Got the hole in the chimney and everything. Wife said it to ugly. Wants something pretty.. Smile ... But pretty is about 500 bucks...

I'd go one step further and make the stove part out of a 30 gallon barrel and mount it inside a 55 gallon barrel. That way you'd have a heat jacket like a wood furnace. Use a squirrel cage fan to blow the heat from the bottom and out the top like a wood furnace and heat your shop with a duct into the shop and leave the stove outside in a sheet metal building. You could heat your home with it also.
I’m doing this with 150’ of stainless steel coil in a 3 branch manifold for a wood fired pool heater.

Really cool weekend project.
Wranglerstar introduced me to this concept years ago. I use the double barrel version w/ 55 gal drums. I lined the bottom w/ sheet metal to keep it from burning out. Also used Cody's idea of putting a damper on the bung hole. Works great and keeps the shop very warm. Just remember that if you burn your shop or house down w/ this stove, your insurance company will not cover you since the stove is not UL listed!

Best to use a ''closed-top'' drum versus an ''open-top'' drum. Reinforcement ribs are more evenly spaced on a 'closed-top' drum; and you don't have to put sealing cement on a locking ring like you do with an ''open-top'' drum. Also, the stovepipe flange will fit better on a 'closed-top' drum. - Ive made many barrel stoves over the years, most with flat cook-tops, and even some with Tempered Glass Windows in the doors. With the exception of the drum, Ive always made everything myself (no kits) . I've even made a few 30 gallon wood-burning Water Heaters (must have a ''pressurized'' water system) .
I disagree. The open top barrels work much better. You DO NOT need to use any kind of "cement" on the open top barrel ring. Simple remove the rubber gasket (that will burn) and the top will seal air tight just fine. Also, those barrels last alot longer than the standard oil barrels that are much thinner and burn out faster.
Another better idea is, instead of welding the flue pipe to the barrel, I made a flat plate and bent it to fit the radius of the barrel and cut the 6" hole in it and welded the flue pipe nipple onto that. Then you can drill holes in it and bolt it on. That way when you are ready to change the barrel (after your oil barrel burns out) and can unbolt it and put it on your new barrel!

Once lined and with a grate installed, they're a great stove.
Nothing fancy
but still a bad boy of a heater.

Pot-bellied stoves are vertically oriented. They stand upright. What you put together there is just called a barrel stove. Whatever the case, I enjoyed your video.

If you'll put firebrick or sand inside the stove, it'll last 2-3 times as long as it will without it. Nice project!

The same kit parts will work on the old 250 gallon oil drums as well. I built one 12 years back, I can fit wood up to 10 inches diameter and five feet long into the stove. It will actually hold close to 1/4 cord of wood. I am trying to find a larger size door though, the doors in these kits just aren't big enough to use the way I want to, I want one 14 to 16 inches wide and preferably about 16 to 18 to inches tall. Not finding anything on the internet though except this style and size kit.

I bought a house with this exact model mounted in my garage. It has a rusted look to it through once you lightly pass over the outer surface lightly with a wire brush. I've burned wood in it maybe 40 times now. Could I recondition it using Rust-Oleum BBQ touch up spray? Its spray paint ment to use on faded away grills and smokers. I was thinking I could lightly clean it up with the brush and maybe spray it with three layers of the paint mentioned? Or is it too dangerous to be messing with now?

I forgot to lower my shield a few times on this one :) I have been meaning to go take a class in welding but it seems hard to find the time.

I just remember the door mainly. I do not remember a damper. But it works well either way. I suppose you just lose more heat without it.

They didn't care . Their not regular welders like some of us. They were just having a good time. Yea I would have used that smokestack kit. Every time I go to a job I have to take a welding test it seem like. I have to be good or down the road I go. The guy is probably happy to have got that done. He wants to melt his ballistics.

At 10: 48, turn the wire feed up, practice on a piece of scrap. Don't hold the tip in one place. Takes practice. Experiment with different heat and wirefeed speeds. Write oon paper the setting (s) that allow smooth filler application. Check the appearance of your welds to online photos correct welds. Check out a book. Liked your leg-locating spray idea. Thanks.

When your son starts getting older, and growing hair all over his body, the world starts to pull at him. And that father & Son times becomes less frequent. And so I say to you dads, enjoy it whenever you can get, however it comes, because one day he will have kids and obligations of his own. Great video.

You had your wire in your mug gun the spool was upside down. It should feed from the bottom not over the top just a heads up. And another thing is you need a cup on the stinger end. And turn the heat up so it burns in instead of balling up. Just trying to help out!

Good video and I may make one for my shop. I'm not jumping on the you shoulda, woulda, coulda band wagon but you may want to tell some of these youngsters to rinse out and put water in the drum if using old drum because if it had flammables or dangerous chemicals in it, it could give off flammable or dangerous chemicals to spark or just to breath. Just saying... I like this and will be looking for a kit,,, thanks and God bless
I just viewed the Wood stove video. Great job, now I want to build one, but there is a problem I live in California and it's illegal to ship the kit here. Darn. I really had my heart set on it. Well I'm not sure buddy but it won't allow me to order it here. But I have been looking on eBay and found the same kit for quite a bit more money. I'm going to try to build a different one just with the barrell by cutting 1/3 of it off and using the scrap for the door. If you have any ideas I would appreciate it. Thanks.

that was a great video..but i would have added ceramic bricks to the inside bottom for more protection as well as a flatter surface..and the bricks will hold heat well too..just a thought..not knocking your stove or anything..well done.
Using a peice of 45 degree angle stock or similar laid flat on a round surface (angle out) is used in rocket modeling to do a line square to the length of a cylinder. no rreason it wouldn't wrk here to line up the holes for the legs.

You are going to want to put firebrick or refractory of some sort in the bottom and sides.
Also you'll want a grate, and a damper.
Trust me on this.

I like how the smoke immediately came streaming out of the stack like a locomotive. I wonder if you could burn coal in it... You know how some smells bring back memories my grandfathers old farm house had a pot belly stove that would burn coal. Of course do not even know where you can get coal anymore. LOL

Don't the kit come with pipe exhaust flange?
It says it works with a 30 gallon but the radius on the pipe flange is to big for the 30 gallon. You need to be really good with sheet metal to pull it tight without tearing the metal. Also I used some gasket sealer to seal it to the barrel.
Was the kit at the home store or did you have to order it?

Wow, MiG welding outside, with no nozzle to shield the gas and not even grinding off the paint of the drum to get a halfway decent bead.
He's using flux core, can see the color of wire and flux coating over the weld. Also the flux core tip he using is a give a way

I got a 30gal barrel, and ordered that kit from another company, turns out, that model no, didn't fit my barrel. My barrel is 14.5'' in diameter.

What happens when stove pipe rust out after welding? Pain in the ass to replace.
I put a rust inhibitor on the whole thing. No big deal. People have been making these things for a long time.
Place some sand or stone in the bottom of stove to stop the bottom from burning out.
