      I love my danios. Unfortunately, I ended up with only one female. I did have 5, but skinny disease set in and lost 2 males, so it's better. They are very active in my community tank, but they don't bother anyone , even my betta sorority of 4. I am very interested in the Liberty Molly because of their social dynamics, however, just like danios, get the right ratio is difficult when purchasing. I know I will never find Liberties locally, so... 😢

    Amazing video!! My liberties, the males don’t stop breeding, so I agree 100%. One thing tho, I notice they like more protein/live foods compare to other mollies I keep(fancy sphenops, and wild latipina). The part about them being fry eaters is true. I’ve seen mine keeps my guppy fry population down by alottt!

    As a European fish keeper,have always disliked common names given to fish!
    Liberty Mollie.
    Poecilia Salvatoris.
    Great video on the water chemistry of this fish. Slightly brackish hard water was the old school method of the 80s that a lot of Rare livebearers were kept and bred.

    • @Fishtory
      @Fishtory  9 днів тому +2

      True. Now most domesticated livebearers can tolerate any neutral or mid range waters. Wild caught still do much better in the harder water ( ph seems to matter less than previously thought, for many fish though!)

    • @garysoutar451
      @garysoutar451 9 днів тому

      @@Fishtory yes that,is true.Today. with domesticated breeding.
      Only ever kept Wild or F1s back in the day,so water chemistry was a bit more important at first.
      Some species could adapt quickly,some not so well.
      Salvatoris didn't last long with some keepers simply because they were kept in wrong water conditions.

      @@Fishtory it’s a super cute little fish. I’m having trouble though with them. Some of the larger females just die. And they don’t look super old. They look like they died during giving birth or stress from the males. My tanks are heavily planted so they hide from males and give birth in a quiet place. But it still happens. It’s a super rare fish here in Denmark, so whenever they are available I buy them

    Great story. Hobby Fishkeeping through time is interesting. There are so many stories to tell. When I see folks with metal frame tanks with slate bottoms like I used to buy at the Ben Franklin 5 and 10 cent store I get nostalgic. When I was a kid everybody sold fish and it seems like there were small storefronts everywhere in Chicago.

    This was very interesting thank you, I hadn’t heard of these mollies before! I’ve been really confused about the mollies I have if anyone has advice😭. It was a family member who got them about 3-4 months ago, we have three and at first they all appeared to be female but about a month ago one of their anal fins changed and now he seems to definitely be a male. Here is where I’m really confused, a couple of weeks after getting them the other two seemed like they could be pregnant especially one of them, who over a month looked huge and squared off and I was sure she was ready to give birth. She never gave birth and now looks a bit smaller than before but still big, and her anal fin has changed and looks like a male’s. I don’t understand if she is still pregnant, has something like worms or that I’ve somehow way over fed her? I’ve read that they can possibly change sex or mature late but I’m so confused about the one who seemed pregnant.

    • @Fishtory
      @Fishtory  8 днів тому

      So mollies are kind of unique, in that at least Amazonian mollies are ALL female. They evolved to not need males anymore lol. But I do not recall them having the ability to change sex, as some fish can.
      I bet you had a "sneaker male" , or a male that pretended to be female when he was in a large group and overpowered or beaten badly by a dominant male in the tank. These guys look female, but will sneak in and impregnate the females while 2 dominant looking males spar for attention or breeding rights. Something like 20% are sneaker males in livebearers. So my guess it you had a male all along that just ate a lot as well, and maybe showed more male features once the dominant males were gone and you took them home?
      All this said, it could indeed be worms or bloated guts from too many flake foods and or too much bloodworm or high protein food, as mollies are 40 to 70% vegetarian depending on the variety and species

    • @blueflower2948
      @blueflower2948 8 днів тому

      @@Fishtory thanks so much for your reply, this is all great to know! I think that definitely could be what happened because although they haven’t been with a big group of mollies and had other males around they have been with a dwarf gourami. He wouldn’t harm them at all but would chase them quite a bit because they would follow him a lot, I think to find food hahaha, and get on his nerves. He was definitely intimidating though, they’re separated now. Do you think I should try treating them for worms? I also wasn’t going to get more mollies because I thought they were going to give birth and have lots of fry but maybe I should get more females to balance things out? The female that’s left is a lot smaller than them and hasn’t grown since we got her, she eats as much as the others and doesn’t seem scared of them but I’m worried she will start to get picked on.

    • @blueflower2948
      @blueflower2948 8 днів тому

      The first one that appeared to be male after a while and 100% looks like a male now does seem to be trying to breed with the pregnant looking molly who’s anal fin has now also changed a lot but maybe he just doesn’t know what he’s doing, he’s not the brightest tbh🥲

      There's only one place online that I know of... In stock. And it's dansfish
      dansfish.com/product.search/Liberty%20molly/recent/100/1
      They're pricey because they're wild caught patterned and not bred domestic lines... so caught in El Salvidor then shipped to aquarium glaser in Germany...then to Wyoming lol then to you. About $35 or more with shipping, per fish. Also try the discount code "Alex" at checkout for a little savings
      The wet spot may have some soon, it is the season they show up to the USA now thru November. But if I recall theirs are domesticated and not quite the wild pattern. Maybe that will change though?
