- Which clubs and players do Nicky Butt & Paul Scholes consider their BIGGEST rivals? | FG: Eras
Battles. Clashes. Red cards.
This week Nicky and Paul are talking about rivalries. They look back on their biggest games against Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester City, Leeds and Chelsea, take us inside the tunnels at Anfield, Highbury and Elland Road and recall what it was like to play against the likes of Steven Gerrard, Patrick Vieira, David Batty and Dennis Wise.
Which was the biggest rivalry of their careers? Which rival midfielder used to do the weirdest things on the pitch? And which was the one club they felt Sir Alex really disliked?
Along the way, they discuss whether they got on with their club rivals when on England duty, recall how Nicky had to protect Gary Neville from an angry Feyenoord front man, Paul reveals just how big a secret his return from retirement against Manchester City was and they discuss whether they would ever have joined a rival.

Which clubs and players do Nicky Butt & Paul Scholes consider their BIGGEST rivals? | FG: Eras
Who do you consider Man United's BIGGEST rival during Butt and Scholes' career? 🤔
Arsenal
Definitely Arsenal
Kenny Dogleash
Arnold whinger
Li’Pewl
Dogleash
Arsenal
Whinger
Arsenal. Has to be them back then, Liverpool were irrelevant.
Ive just got to say how i find it very comforting when Nicky says "remember" it just reminds me of being a kid and growing up in an area where people didn't say "I remember when" but instead they would say " I member when" and nicky keeps saying it on these pods 😂😂 i love it
Just like listening to two mates in the pub. It's great, it's so natural and much more insightful than any interview. Keep them coming
Scholes was spot on saying arsenal were classy except for Keown! Spot on Scholesy!🤣🤣
Keown has got a monkeys head
🤣🤣
I've subscribed to this just on the back off Scholesy, asking Buvey where he was from on the Overlap Fan Debate😂, really like to hear him talk , Butty is good also , on my first time of hearing him on this type of format 👊
Welcome 👋
@@footballsgreatestpod
Please ask Buvey where he's from every episode, absolutely hilarious 😂
Loving the synergy with Butty and Scholes, just like two mates , avin a natter down the local boozer , really enjoying the format 👍
@@sallycinnamon356I clocked that also! Took the kid down a peg. Quite rightly.
@@jobbo30
Yip , Hilarious, when he said Bristol, and Scholesy , just replied mmm 😂
He should ask him every time Buvey is on , where you from again Buvey 😂
Yes I noticed that…. Was’t ao chirpy then was he 😂
These were proper footballers. This is proper football talk. Not like the mug UA-camrs on the sky fan debate. So glad this is on lads. I'd like to hear Roy chat with you, i bet there are some tales....
Scholesy and Butty, doesn't get any better!
It really does
Good to have you on board Matt
Love Butty and Scholesy.
Scholes has always been my fav utd player ...as a kid I thought he didn't talk 😅 good to see him share
It’s actually nice to see Scholesy so comfortable talking for once 😅
Arsenal fan here, lovely to hear how much respect you guys have for them. And yeah back in day there was only ever one player from Utd I would of wanted to see in an Arsenal shirt...
Paul Scholes.
Nicky hits the nail on the head when he says "and we lived through that"( Liverpool winning everything)... I got labelled a glory hunter on many occasions but I was 15 years old before I saw my beloved club win the league. My kid memories other than 1990 and 91 under ferguson and the Ron Atkinson fa cup we had nothing other than Liverpool defeats for memories like Michael Thomas scoring to win the league for arsenal at anfield or Wimbledon beating them at Wembley or even crystal Palace beating them in the semi just months after being battered in the league so no matter how bad things are now, it's been worse
We must be a similar age, born in 78...and you described my childhood experience of following united perfectly, I remember celebrating Palace and Wimbledon wins as hard as any united success (probably with the exception of arsenal fa cup win and 99 champs league win) because Liverpool were so dominant and just wanted anyone to beat them.
@@samuelbino7915 78 too ah ah
@@samuelbino7915 I suppose its the same for a Liverpool fan who grew up in the 90s and the 00s but the Liverpool loses is all we had back then aha ah. My youngest boy is 8 now and he is going through the same pain as I did and I keep assuring him that things will get better. ( I hope I'm right) I have 3 boys and they are called Ole, Gunnar and Sol and I have a girl called Skjaer.
Born in 72. Liverpool dominated but in the 80s our head to head record against them was Utd by a mile.
@@shaka7594 head to head isn't what we craved, it was the title and we had to wait till 93 for that !!!
Thanks lads, you put a smile on my face this morning thinking about the amount of quality players back then, and when you mentioned the Chelsea team, it reminded me of Jonathan Pierce in his early days of tv commentary on channel 5 when they played Tromso in the snow.
wow, you just took me back to being 11. two weeks before my bday, watching that match wi mi old dad.
thanks for that dude.
and rip dad thanks for showing me the good and bad of footy
@@mowvu5380 glad you had the good memories. It was snow joke for Chelsea, and when Vialli scored "dream maker becomes goal taker" 😁
@@90minutemusic haha yeh they lost i think. two early tromso goals in a few inch of snow done them in lol
Liverpool fan here. That was a good podcast. 👍🏽
you can tell in the first 10 seconds that this is the podcast that everybody needed
👏👏
Top that lad's, brilliant, big respect to you both. Great players and very down to earth. I'm a Liverpool fan .
Liverpool fan too. Mad respect for Butty and Scholes.
Love it
This is the best thing Scholes does in his broadcasting and punditry career, talks much better about the past than the contemporary game. Some new anecdotes that I'd not heard before
Loved this, thanks for giving us some insights into you memories. Loved and still do love the rivalry. Utter respect from a Liverpool Fan. Both speak so well
Cheers Simon
Really enjoyed that, total respect for both of you, loved it when you talked about Leeds, I'm no Leeds fan but worked in Leeds for years and the hatred Leeds fans have for man utd is real and concerning when you hear what Leeds fans have to say.
As a Liverpool fan I’m starting to like Nicky Butt, after listening to a few podcasts, did work with his father in law about 20 odd years ago
He’ll be so relieved to hear that.
Cool story
agreed mate im a red also and he seems like a solid lad bleedin hated him back in the day but have to say would of loved him at liverpool
Keep um a coming lads . Maybe get Sharpey or Giggs in ?!
That FA Cup semi final was one of the best games of the 90s. Topped off with the Giggs wonder goal
Absolute Quality this, coming form a Liverpool fan!!!!!!
City fan here, kippax etc.. agree , scousers and mancs are very similar, same banter, same slang.. were northerners together. Bobby Charlton, and Eric Cantona, all real city fans LOVE.👊💙
Great pod again lads. I really enjoy listening to the stories you both have from a great period at our club. .
Love the podcast lads - Scholes best player I’ve ever seen live and Nicky Butt one of those players that’s not talked about enough as an absolute stalwart for united . I often say I wish we had Nicky Butt in the team now he would not let players off with what we are watching now ! Thanks for the podcast!
Brilliant. Could listen to these two all day, butty is brilliant and genuine to the end.
As a Liverpool fan i got to say Man u have all ways been the first game i look at and still do plus a lot off world class players and Scholes and Butt were fabulous players and great lads as well and as a side note my first away game was Man u away and it was the first time i seen George Best play and i never forgot it and in my opinion still one of the best players in World Football
Love this podcast. As a Chelsea fan its really interesting hearing you guys talk about Chelsea in the 90's and your view of the club. Best regards from Norway.
Na na na na na,
Nicky, Nicky Butt,
Nicky Butt,
Nicky Nicky Butt...from NUFC fan. Next pod can you talk about the time we smashed yous 5-0 with Beardsley in CM putting in a performance like a prime Modric!
Great show, keep em coming lads.
Cheer Matt
Legends great to listen to them chatting about the rivalry with other teams brilliant
Instantly my new fav football pod.
Two totally real lads🙌🏻🙌🏻
Don’t listen to anyone but yourselves boys.
Those that tell you what you have to do always spoil things eventually.
Totally agree about the replay at Villa Park & was one of the fans in the pitch stinking of booze 🤣
Great Pod Boys keeping em coming COYG❤️❤️❤️
Enjoyed that lads.....more please.
Brilliant really enjoyed it, thanks both.
Brilliant show!!!!!! loving this man
This is excellent! Nicky Butt is made for this, very natural and getting PS to relax and chat
Loving this, butty there was a rumour he had a Man City tattoo on his chest, and I still loved him playing for us,pair of legends!❤
These are the types of former players that I want to hear from.. Players that have won it all at the highest level
That goal vs that Barcelona team In 2008 was my favourite scholes goal
Great football chat guys, keep up the good work
They show so much respect to the players that they didn't like. Great show. Very honest.
Cheers Turley
2 of my heroes, great players and even better lads , wish we had players with their talent and mindset now , these lads love UTD 💯
Love this format so laid back and flowing any chance we can get eni aluko on to absolutely wreck it
This be decent this channel ..so natural .. Excellent, look forward to the rest of them..
Great to see two top players paying respect to other great players and clubs. Well done boys
Nice one paul
Love it ❤ keep it coming fellas
When Gigs got shown up by Chris Waddle.. class
Class this! Keep them coming
What a find. Two legends ❤
The games and battles on the pitch with arsenal were classics, The battles on the pitch were just as entertaining as the actual games Keane and viera the obvious one, It was one game that I made sure not to miss some of my best day's out. Younger generations are robbed of these rivalries in todays game mite sound biased but football was much better in 80s and 90s, game needs that edge it used to have..loving this podcast 👍🇮🇪
lads, it's the greatest content on yt right now. So fascinating to listien about your stories.
Fa cup replay 99. Probably the best game I've ever been to. Out and out bedlam. I got on the pitch twice at villa park. That day and when we played villa in the cup a few years later. At the latter my dad said if I go on the pitch when we equalised I'd get a hiding. Boom, minutes later we got the winner and he's in the 18 yard box 😂😂😂 I had to go get him the soft old git. "not a word to your step mum".
She'd seen it on the telly 😂😂😂 he got a rollicking n half once we got back to Gorton.
Going away with United when I was young was the best thing about my childhood. Fucking brilliant
I was at that second game and remember it vividly. Sunday night sat above the United fans in the north stand upper.
Horrible to watch as a Villan! United fans were brilliant - even at 2-0 down they were fully behind them. Our fans started oléing the passes then Ruud came off the bench and changed everything.
Was my first, but far from last experience of watching Villa lose a 2 goal lead against United 🙄
@@heeby123 yeah villa park is my favourite ground in the country for the times we had there. First went on the opening day when you whacked us and you had the old trinity road stand still and all it's brickwork. Should never have been torn down. It was beautiful.
We always took thousands to villa park and it always seemed to be the best atmosphere of the season both from us and from the villa.
Hilarious!!! The things football makes us do😂
@@thamendrengovender1384 it's what makes away days what they are. Always great stories
Why did he get a rollicking? I'm ct, think you missed out the part of what he done wrong?
This was great, legends.
Hi Nick, remember us - Louise & Louise at Poynton Travel - we booked your stag do and lots of other holidays!! We'd love to hear from you again .
Real football players!! Right here, great episode lads 👏🏻
Scholes coming back was crazy and would never happen again especially not telling the other players
It’s good to see butty doing a podcast.
my first time here i cant believe Scholsy is doing a podcast telling stories, im in.
Really enjoyed that ❤
I was in the White Swan in Swinton for that late winner against City. A bloke who was with us is a Bolton fan and said "calm down" as I was celebrating 😆
He said calm down 😂 that's hilarious
Absolutely love listening to u 2 legends 💪
As a lifelong United supporter who despises everything to do with those tramps up the East Lancs Road it warms my heart to hear from the inside, just how much Fergie knew we had to beat them. Maybe it was the Scots fight within him. I used to travel down from Scotland and do a 440 mile round trip, but every minute spent on a bus, train or car was worth it the second I walked up the Stretford End and saw the hallowed turf. The newer Old Trafford doesn't feel as good or the same to me. That's why I support a new 100,000 stadium with huge areas for safe standing, called "New Trafford" GGMU. #GlazersOutNow
Imagine that 90s team in a modern 4-3-3 with Keane, Butt and Scholes in Midfield and Giggs, Beckham and Any striker up top. Unplayable
“We love United, we do,
We love United, we do,
We love United, we do,
Oh, United we love you!” 😈❤️
Liverpool fan here great stuff this .
Scholesy’s story about Dennis Wise “doing weird stuff” and putting his fingers in Scholesy’s mouth 🤣🤣
This is my favourite podcast out of all the fitba ones ❤
Nice one Matty
Do a foreign club (non Premier League) players show, lads. Your era had the most great players of any era in my opinion. I want to hear about Zidane, Ronaldo (R9), Romario, Maldini, Baggio, Seedorf, Ronaldinho, Hagi, Cannavaro, Riquelme, Figo, Rui Costa, Totti, Xavi and Iniesta, Raul.. etc. The list goes on and on.. Which players did you feel were a class above when you played them in Europe or International football and who do you think doesn't maybe get spoken about enough when people talk about the top players from your era? Keep up the good work 👍
The Ferguson vs Dalglish rivalry goes all the way back to their early days when they were playing for Rangers and Celtic reserves in 1969.
Also Delgish's Father In Law helped Ferguson enter the Oub Trade, dont know if they got on or not thiugh
Nicky Butt - proper normal working class bloke. Sat and had a drink with him and his brother Si many times during the heights of Utd. You would never know he was who he was. No edge to him whatsoever.
Where we’re from he wouldn’t have got away with any ego and he was well aware. Top bloke, from a city fan.
Ps: there should be a job for him at Utd on the coaching staff. Was treated pretty badly last time I heard
Spurs fan. Love to hear these 2 chatting it out. Keep her lit
Cheers Ritchie
Would love a class of 92 special pod.
2005 FA Cup final To this day still can’t believe Utd lost that game Battered Arsenal for 120 mins missed some great chances Beat on penalties A Great injustice especially for PS
A great day. Solitary gobshite plastic Man Utd fan in the pub had tenner bets with literally everyone in there. Watching him start to brick it as they missed chance after chance, and then his face like thunder as Viera stepped up.... 😅 just hilarious. Give him his due, he went to the cashpoint and I thought that would be the last we'd see of him, but he came back and paid out. Paid for my Chinese and taxi home.
Love the cast boys ..😎👌
Dennis Wise ripping the hair out of Nickys leg that time..... I have heard of dark arts but that one was new to me....
It was beautiful
Christ, I miss the old days..
I remember Reyes 🙏 was undoubtedly targeted against Arsenal in a game at Old Trafford,Phil Neville especially who thought Reyes leg was the the ball
Wanted Nicky talk about Anelka more.
Liking Butty calling out Rod Thornley.
"Someone as technically gifted as you but shit at penalties???"...... quality! 😂 YNWA!! ✌
Paul sounds a right tool in the promo at start lol
Legends👌Luv it👍
I support Arsenal it's interesting when they say meeting up for England they never felt there was anything nasty with Arsenal players..."well maybe Keown but not Adams he was classy". If you read Adams' autobiography he says after winning the title at Anfield in '89 at the next England squad he was sitting on the coach mocking the Liverpool players, he regretted it and learnt but he clearly wasn't always that way.
Is Buttys word of the day "Dynamic" 😅
Butt comes across as a thoroughly decent fella
I wonder if the Utd coaching staff, players and board members watch such content when they have time just to understand what Man Utd means so that we dont have performances we had against Spurs!😢
That's what would sort the club, everyone listening to the glory days 💀
What do you think
If you listen, we did have performances like we did against spurs, google it, the only difference is Fergie was given time. What did the boss win in the first 5 years, what did we finish in the league? Remember southampton 6-2, Newcastle 5-0, Man City 6-2, Chelsea 5-0, Liverpool 4-1, York City 3-0spurs 4-1, villa 3-1 (you won’t win with kids) that’s just a few , it’s easy to look at the past and forget, the difference then was we gave the manager time, we supported our club, we cheered when going forward, and we became the 12th man!! Yeah it’s crap at the min but it reminds me of the late 80s . We gotta support the team and stop the toxic atmosphere. We are United fans
@bluecarrotTV the big difference is Gen Fragile have the attention span of about 5 minutes, everything is now not hyperbolic nonsense written by 10 journos, but 10,000,000 dipshits who play trash EA football games and think they know the first thing about actual football, the game has changed immeasurably to where Fergie barely gave a tactical talk in 25 years, tactics are the talk of the canteen among players. Here's a novel idea, stop living in the fucking past, the game, much like life moves on, you were good once, now you're not, like every other club in history, deal with it. Old Trafford used to be a national treasure, now it is literally a leaking rust bucket, Carrington was a world class facility, now it would embarrass most Championship sides. The problems at Utd are much like their own fans whinging and drivel - pretty much fucking endless.
@@bluecarrotTV that's true I want the manager and the players to do well but above all I wish we could be less toxic like you mentioned even for just a month and we move together as one! GGMU
The Prince is back
butty and scholes do you remember Danny Parkin taking the bus home after united training
My profile pic was scholes flying kick on Dennis wide. Proper windup merchant
this podcast is great
Nicky- champions league final 99.
You and Becks CM.
Replacing Paul and Roy.
How was that for you and David?
There must have been some major discussions about that.
We're you nervous? Excited? Anxious? Worried?
What we're the discussions like with David and Sir Alex like?
Bringing Becks inside, alongside you was a big surprise at the time.
Losing keano and scholesy was a huge loss and must have piled the pressure on.
Hiya just to let you know they discussed it in a previous episode
Why not watch the last podcast
Watch along to some classic games you played in would be gold!
That United team had some great suitable names,
Giggs (Jigs),
Sharp (sharp player and the name of the sponsor),
Keane (Keen Player),
Cole (a diamond)
Bruce ("Freeeeeeedom great Scottish warrior)
And
Butt.
Bruce the great Scottish warrior ?
Weird comment!
@@dondamon4669 weird person
SAF messed up selling Butt
Alot of people have come out and said same story as rod about the united lot at England. So can't be untrue the way butty is saying it. Although butty didn't get near england once he left United and was hardly in it while he was there also.
Leeds away was mental
Viera was phenomenal. Keane was better.
