Butt and Scholes look back on Sir Alex Ferguson's most inspiring moments | Football's Greatest: Eras
Вставка
- Опубліковано 26 вер 2024
- It’s episode two of Football’s Greatest Eras with Nicky Butt and Paul Scholes and this week they’re talking about the man who had a transformative effect on their lives - Sir Alex Ferguson.
Nicky and Paul tell us what it was like to be managed, motivated, developed and - yes - rollicked by the great man. They also bring up a ton of memories such as:
- Which of them was once surprised to find Fergie waiting for them in the headmaster’s office when they were late for school?
- Who thought he was being sold after rowing with the manager after a game?
- Which player did Sir Alex watch constantly at a dinner before later signing him for United?
They chat about what set Sir Alex apart as a manager, recall some of his most inspirational team talks, remember how shocked Cristiano Roanldo and other foreign players were by the hairdryer, and discuss the desire to keep on winning that saw him move on club legends like David Beckham, Paul Ince, Jaap Stam and Roy Keane.

Butt and Scholes remember what it was really like to get on the wrong side of Fergie | FG: Eras
Who was Sir Alex Ferguson's greatest signing? ✍
1 Cantona
2 Rooney
3 Van der Sar
That’s a tough one 🤔 Depends what direction your coming from 💁🏼♂️
RVPs goals won us our last league title,so I'd say him.
Got to be the clubs top scorer, Rooney.
Eric, he was perfect at the time and as a fan he is my favourite player. Special without a doubt but the change on the team was massive. Match winner but also helped us tick though a game. I love every player who played bar the odd few. So many special players and signings but Eric Cantona changed us.
im a manc lad the same age as you guys so it was always like you was living the dream for the rest of us . legends .
Great that lad's, I'm a 55 year old Liverpool Fan wound me up when you finally knocked us off our perch. You had some great teams back then.
Only 55?? You have had a tough paper round
Nicky Butt is good at this despite him not aspiring to be a pundit.
You know you're good when you're getting that many words out of Scholesy
I’m a United Fan all my life (52 years)… the Class of ‘99 are (and always will be) my Absolute Favourites 🙌🙌🙌🙌
I'm not a utd fan but I thought it was class of 92
As a Newcastle fan I respect u nick how well u played for us credit 2 u
Paul Scholes, you were my favourite player, and Nicky Butt was SO underrated. Cheers lads, and C'mon United ❤ Imagine what Sir Alex was like in his Aberdeen days?😂
Just ask Gordon Strachan.. the documentary that Eric cantona made always makes me laugh when Strachan is telling the players what to expect when going from Ron Atkinson to Alex Ferguson. He doesn't a little chuckle and says "this is different boys, this is very different" 😂😂 it's my favourite bit of the whole documentary
@@mikeryan4055 Yeh man, I watched that. Sir Alex was a scary man, in his 30s.
I'm a boro fan but loved that Man utd team and these two are my favourite, no spin, no hype, just proper down to earth footy chat despite what they achieved.
Wouldn't be admitting to that fella
@@ricksterk7014 to what? Supporting my home town club? Or admiring that Man Utd team?
Utd fan that was a big fan of the boro side in their days. Robbo made some great signings
@@BobVance529 oh man I loved those days... it was so exciting for an average size club like us, even before the Juninho and Rav days... signig £1m players, Bllackmore came in and did well. Nigel Pearson. Hendrie etc great days. robson and Daglish are the best people in football as far as I am concerned. Real Gents.
Same here bro I’m a Boro fan too but United are my 2nd team and these podcasts with the ex players of Fergies teams are spot on.
Loving this. As a lifelong United fan, I could listen to these guys all day.
2 of utds legends. Thank you both for the memories lads.
You guys need to get an Aberdeen legend like Willy Miller on to talk about sir Alex' to comper what he was like in the early days he was mental. That Aberdeen team was amazing 👍
Why?
@@ricksterk7014 Because they were the ONLY Team to BEAT Real Madrid in a finale.
Scholesy “tea the way it should be “ Wtf pissed meself laughing
Hilarious watching these two awkwardly trying to punt tea bags 😂
Aside from the obvious.... this as well!! 🤣
Both absolutely enthralled in the art of slanging teabags.
I might have to get some to get the sponsors off their back a bit!
I’ve tried Lanchsire tea, that was as good as it deserves!
Tea Bags would have been perfect to be an ad on Neville's Overlap 😂
@@Takerfanatic So true! That and Raspberry choc rolls hahah 🤣
A new podcast to watch Very good content by 2 legends of the game & the respect they have for SAF shows here
Get sir alex in with you one time keep up the good work chaps 🇾🇪🇾🇪🇾🇪
Loved this! As an avid tea drinker, I particularly enjoyed the chat about how they like to make a brew 😂
Brilliant show lads, loved watching you play and really enjoying all the stories. Best wishes from Ireland👍
"At the best club in the world" - yep, still is, always will be. There's more to greatness than current form, and the ups and downs of fortune. GGMU!!
😂😂😂😂
Well said ignore the trolls
@@shaka7594 oh there's not a chance of them worrying me😆
Living in the past
This podcast is gonna be huge! Brilliant!
only among utd fans
Just blissfully listening..! The romance of football still exists.. ❤
I love this could listen for hours
Even as a Liverpool fan love fergie stories
Great to hear these stories. Keep it coming!
Idolised these men growing up. Big love.
110% enjoyment to listen to use guys cheers Mark
Good to hear the old stories keep it up lads!
Scholes saying “Lancashire tea” was beautifully awkward 😂
Great podcast lads. Legends!
Why am I not surprised that Fergie re-uses teabags lol
Scholes on 30 minutes says a kid with a banner saying Sir alex ferguson out before Easter... that kid is a genius just for knowing that he would become a Sir over 10 years later. He would of got massive odds for that. Just think he had won nothing with united at that point, not even the 1st fa cup in the replay against Palace
Great Banta …. , keep them coming.
You should get some of your old team mates on a guests :-
Lee Sharpe
Nev’s
Becks
Keano
Etc etc 😊
Great podcast lads !! Salute from Scotland 👊
So many great memories watching yous two i still have the 95 96 top with the stadium in it
Ill never forget the diving header Nicky did, i still see him lunging himself at full pelt, almost knocking himself out lol, ive no idea who it was against or the final score but im pretty sure it was a massive goal for us!
It was the fourth goal in a 4-0 win against Newcastle in the 96 charity shield. Always loved that header
@@BobVance5292nd goal
Barthez wasn't in goals that night for the Trezeguet goal against Monaco. That was 1998 - was van der Gouw as Schmeichel was out.
Barthez was in goal but it was the Monaco goal
It’s crazy how us fans remember these things more than the players that played these games 😂 on so many occasions I’ve heard Gary Neville recall things incorrectly as well
@@YMY_1999Haha, happens regularly. Except for Carragher though, his memory is fantastic.
@YMY_1999 It's not crazy because they have more going on in their lives. Even Carragher whom the guy below has mentioned remembers more because he's a savant who doesn't have knowledge outside of football and football is his whole life, he's never even cooked before. He's not a proper adult.
@@FootkerSnookball who says they have more going on in their lives lol pretty sure somebody on 100k a week doesn’t have to worry about cleaning the house or paying for car insurance or mortgage or worrying about where the next meal is going to come from lol
No Gary Neville.
Thank god for that!
Lovely stories! 🎉
Yes chaps, love the podcast as a fellow Gortoner
This is fucking amazing!
Some guests would be good. Gordon Strachan, Dennis Irwin, Robbo, Paul McGrath, Pally, Teddy are a few that spring to mind.
Class👏👏
butt and scholes talk fergie, utd and tea bagging. sounds about right :D
Just found this! How dumb am I? Brilliant. Legends!
So did I but it was only uploaded yesterday lol
Great podcast! Scholes my favourite player along with Keane and Butt was brilliant to and there at loads of important moments, without Keane there it would of been Butt and Scholes
It's funny to hear Scholes a man who couldn't be bothered with the press, now being everywhere talking on podcasts, guess that's what happens when you can do it on your terms and with your mates... And hooray for that.
I'm a leeds fan...... we all hated man u and fergy in the 90s but by god we'd have the players and the gaffer..... I might be a rival fan but I know what real is....
yes yes yes, thank you Mr.Scholes :3 , do you read comments ? i loved to watch you play, since you left manu they gone to shiete, you did realy well, ( no manu fan ) but i still loved to see you play....
hello, Paul Scholes here. I love spending my time reading through comments on youtube, its my favourite way to pass the time. Thanks for your support. Much Love PS.
Yes and I'm Nicky Butt.
I too like readings comments but know what I love even more?
Buckets of bloody tea.
I've heard a few ex United players that say S A F would go off at one of the British players just to show the foreign boys what would be coming if they didn't live up to expectations
Pele once praised Nicky Butt during the 2002 World Cup saying he was a 'tremendous midfielder' and the best player of the tournament up to that point.
I know, luckily Gerrard was injured that tournament so England did better than expected rather than worse than expected in the next bunch of tournaments where unfortunately Butt pulled out of Euro2004 injured and Gerrard backpassed for France to win the group and England had to play the hosts instead of Greece.
That new air tea must taste great 🥴
Selling out to Lancashire Tea, lads? Scholesy pretending to drink out of a mug with nothing in it. World's gone. 😂
The greatest area in football.
Manchester? Or do you mean era?😂
@@BobVance529He means central midfield 😂
Lancashire Tea 😂
These podcasts can be heard on the Overlap anyway.....same old stories and no Jeff anymore
His pod cast . Not a Utd fan but iam Deerfield fan Lancashire yes get in ha ha
Who would u guys rate as the best manager since sir Alex retired.
For me it was ole
And the fact ole was building a team for the future a few of the players he signed seem to have some real potential like amad for example
All the reports of Ferguson could not take training & had little or no tactics is incredible considering all the success he enjoyed and the longevity
He had the tactics, but it was more the simple things. There's a great bit on Stick to Football where Keano and Nev explain this.
35:13 scholesy.. you'd go by Sir Matt Busby's room and there was "" !! WHAT everywhere !! "" Oh .. ok smoke 😅😂😅😂
Looking back. Fergie was a mafia boss 😂
👌👌👌
Theres nowt in them mugs
SlapHead &Ginger -New dynamic duos👌
What about sugar n coffee lads
scholes has become such a bellend talking shyte about utd and affecting the moral of the current team of players
He speaks the truth, maybe you belong to the WOKE brigade
22:42 yeah. He never lost is working-class mentality.
Great podcast lads. Would love to see this podcast dethrone busy Starmalover G Nev for views.
Great show guys, deffo be watching again 👍
20:40 - unless Nicky Butt counts the Scots and Irish as a foreigners, he didn’t have a single foreign manager at Newcastle!! WTF is he talking about ?!
Nicky Butt was underated im a birmingham fan and we had him for a short spell at yhe end of his career and he was class! Never seen him make a mistake
'stirring it three times to the right' sounds like a Ronaldo step over.
Can't believe there's nobody there to make you a brew and you had to clang two empty cups together, lol.
These new shows are absolutely brilliant. What a pair of legends.
Right, whoever is responsible for getting Scholes to do an advert needs some kind of recognition. Was it Sir Alex? lol
Segue to Lancashire Tea ... seamless :P
Ive never subbed to a channel so fast 😊
Gotta get Sir Fergie on....
Could you guys explain about the other players from the youth team the class of 92 who never made it the reason why and the ones that did make it give some insight into it please.
Great shout
10/10
19:18 The goal Butt supposedly gave away, Van de Gouw conceded against Trezeguet. Barthez was on the pitch … but he was still playing for Monaco.
His achievements at Aberdeen were more incredible than anything at Utd.
Sweet,,,,ferguson,,,,,although mixing my decades,,,,,they all met at sometime,,,fergie,,v mourhino,,,,,,,fergie v wagner,,,, fergie v keegan,,,,,,lists a long one,,,,,,,Fergie is possibly the only who who will be at all remembered,,,,like the steins,,busby,,,,shankley,,,
all scots,,,,,,,???
You won't get players like these two again. Solid mentality.
Today's kids get too much too soon.
Best footy talk heard in lonnnnng time. Good lads having a natter
Scholes was class but nicky butt was a fuckin player who was so underrated...Great to see these two ....
Great show. You should think about getting some sponsors maybe.
😂
You've got to get in touch with sir Alex and get him on your show.
What i love about this Podcast is that these 2 couldnt seem to care about being media trained they are just themselvez
Enjoyed that, better podcast than Gary Neville's, down to earth knowledgeable conversation, Fergie making 2 cups of tea with 1 teabag , class
Listen to the first part of this...
Then think about Paul Pogba, Jessie Lingard, Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Mason Greenwood etc...
Now think about why we've been the way we've been in recent years.
SMH.
I wonder which character Scholes is Statler or Wharldof. The guy is constantly moaning and saying back in my day. The guys needs to get a proper job.
With regards to Staam, I read Fergie had thought he had lost a yard of pace when he came back from an injury and used the book as an excuse to get him out of the door. Fergie admits it was his worst mistake.
I’m a massive Liverpool fan but the class of 92 are genuinely nice humble lads. Great watch. Keep it up. 👍🏻
Remember watching Nicky Butt for the first time VS Liverpool in a youth team game at OT! He absolutely ran the show! As a side note us Manc lads are not designed to sell merch, not our cup of tea! (cough)
love this find - im a Geordie but love this - if you know you know
Cole and yorkie link up play was phenomenal, they knew each others game
Fabian should have stayed it? Fabian wasn’t the keeper?
There's more podcasts popping up about utd past than there were total number of players ever..!
Sir Alex practically raised these lads like his own kids. Imagine the respect! You'd die for someone like that on the pitch. Managerial genius
United played my team back in the day. Waited outside for the United team to come out the stadium and get on the coach. Butt and Scholes just walked right past us and didn't even acknowledge any of the fans waiting, United fans included. They got straight on the coach and started playing cards. There was only Ferguson, Beckham and Nistelrooy who signed autographs and spoke to us.
What happened with Scholesy’s eye problem, I was going when I remember it happening but didn’t he miss almost a whole season with it?
